Honestly, from the bits and pieces I've gotten over the years, Australian politics seems to be a non stop backstab fest that would make the Sith proud, with most Prime Ministers never getting to serve a full term. But since this is the Dollop, of course they managed to dig up a story showing things are worse than we thought.

Stato-Masochist posted:i was glad gary finally raised the pressing question of why baseball produces these absurd characters seemingly more than any other sport Honestly I think it's a combination of longevity, and volume. Baseball's been around forever, and it was so widespread at one point that what we'd today call 'minor league' teams were on par with everyone else. Add in to that the fact that a baseball team usually has about 25 people on it - though not all teams had roster limits historically, and teams gain and lose players throughout the season, so... let's say an average of probably around 30 players a team, times however number of teams, over more than a hundred years of play... ...like, we have documentation of tens of thousands of baseball players. You get that big a sample size, you're bound to have some outliers with ridiculous stories.

When I saw them for the Chicago show a couple of weeks ago, he was sitting next to some kind of air purifier thing that he claimed cost $100 and stopped all COVID, which seemed like a weird thing to say.

Air purifiers (basically a fan with a good filter meant to circulate air in a gicen area) are actually really good practice. A lot of places were masking isn't possible (like a dentist's office) use them to help reduce the chance of infection. That, combined with masking of those who can be, significantly (and I mean very significantly) drops transmission rates. Sonit makes sense, if you are getting dental work, or giving a performance, if you have good air circulation and others are masked, you are pretty much safe.

Him admitting that the researcher for this one said Burr didn’t have affairs when he actually did puts a cloud over the entire series of Burr episodes. It’s been a puff piece the entire time, and I couldn’t care less about the legacy of Hamilton and Burr, but if she was willing to lie about that what else did she make up to make Burr look good?

# ? Jul 8, 2022 15:33 |

Well, as Dave said multiple times, there are a lot different accounts and ton of research data. You can believe this story, you can belive the musical Hamilton, just know that at this point due to time and such, there is no 100% objective truth. You can only go off the myriad of resources quoted.

It is very suspect to deny that Burr carried on affairs because even within the general knowledge of the time, that was something not even Burr claimed and I'm sure everyone was aware of. Burr was a notorious womanizer and detailed his many visits with prostitutes in his diary. Burr also carried on an affair with his Indian, as in the subcontinent, housekeeper, Mary Emmons, who was a servant of his first wife, Theodosia. They had children, which Burr even acknowledged privately and financially supported. There definitely could have been an arrangement between him and Theodosia due to her health issues and it being the late 18th/early 19th century. This isn't pamphlet, propaganda stuff which was the Clinton Body Count stuff of the day, just common knowledge and an accepted fact for gentlemen of means. Everyone was aware the Founding Fathers were carrying on affairs, it's just what wealthy people did back then. Not to say everyone did but it wasn't as scandalous as it is now. Hamilton did most likely shoot first and purposely miss but under the laws of dueling, Burr was in his rights to fatally shoot Hamilton. Burr would later on claim that he purposely killed Hamilton during his exile but it's debatable if that was accurate or just talk. Hamilton did write several pledges as to "throwing away his shot" before the duel but it's debatable if that was true. It could have just been a way to defame Burr after the fact and elevate himself but it was possible Hamilton never meant to kill Burr, which was not uncommon in duels. It was possible for both parties to do such if the grievance wasn't to the level of taking someone's life and resolve the slight while saving face. This obviously doesn't work out and is another reason why dueling was abolished. It'll be interesting to see how part 3 goes because Aaron Burr possibly wanted to become the dictator of his own country in the southwest of the modern United States, about 40,000 acres of parts of Texas and what was then US territory. I've never looked into it but I would imagine a huge amount of the sentiment on the VP killing a framer of the constitution was further tinged to full hatred by that VP going on to conspire to form his own nation. People were mad about the duel but what made Burr persona non grata was his trial for treason, which he is found not guilty on by the grounds that conspiracy without acting on it wasn't considered actionable at the time. Dave's really pulling hard for Burr but it kind of destroys your image when you kill a guy in a duel, claim innocence, and then go on to possibly be an American Napoleon, which some historians claim could have been possible end goal for him. I'm surprised he hasn't brought up Burr by Gore Vidal, unless I missed it. It's kind of Hamilton but for Aaron Burr. RocknRollaAyatollah fucked around with this message at 20:06 on Jul 8, 2022 |

Burr was objectively the better person in the Hamilton/Burr feud but he was still a wealthy little fancy lad in the colonial days so he was also a dumb piece of poo poo and stanning either of them is real dumb. I know Dave wants to kinda 'counter' Hamilton but yea pretending Burr's affairs are 'rumored' is silly, the man kept detailed financial notes and included 'got a hooker' in them. He does get points over Hamilton for likely having it as at least a mostly open thing with his wife and not, ya know, extorting an abused woman for sex and then calling her a scheming whore. You can debate the ethics of dueling all you want but Hamilton and his idiot kid getting shot is the definition of 'play stupid games win stupid prizes'. Hamilton (the play) tries to whitewash it as if he was just a sad dad too preoccupied with his son's death and all but much like Phillip it was basically the culmination of constant antagonism and posturing and Hamilton (the dude) going 'well well well, if it isn't the consequences of my actions' before maybe saying he may shoot the ground instead. As for the last bit, Burr's conspiracy is a vastly overblown thing in a lot of ways, mainly because the main side we have is his co-conspirator who was very actively trying to downplay his own role, so he had a vested interest in making Burr sound like the mastermind. Burr's trials ended in acquittals multiple times because there was no real solid proof beyond vague 'he's friends with these people' and 'he went to dinner at their house' beyond that testimony. The main reason he was so hated after the duel was because Hamilton was a massively influential media and political figure, same reason that when his moron kid got shot the papers called it a 'murder' and implied the guy Phillip spent days harassing and got into MULTIPLE duels with just snapped and shot him out of nowhere and all and the papers were basically doing all they can to say Burr did treason without actually saying it.

yea sorry that was unclear, I mean more in agreeing with 'he probably should have just tossed that source because that's such a wild and obvious lie that should red flag the entire source' than saying Dave himself was denying them.

My girlfriend and I making the move from Pennsylvania to Florida this weekend and will need some podcasts for listening. She liked the Boston Corbett episode and a few others she has heard. Taking recommendations for great episodes. Thinking Negras Piedras Jailbreak, Jet Pack Madness, and Caning of Charles Sumner for sure. I really want her to experience Garrett getting broken in the best ways, so anything that emphasizes that would be cool.
