I think Nolan's movies set out to answer the question "how would Batman as a person, force, institution, etc. actually fix Gotham?"

And the answer is really "He wouldn't. He would try, and fail, leave it worse than he found it, and then hand over the keys to his broken kingdom to somebody else when he finally got sick of it"

he stopped ninjas from gassing the city and then later nuking it

did he fix gotham?

e: Batman Begins I think you can probably make the case the city is better off with him than without him. but they only came to nuke the city because of him so I feel like that's a wash anyway.

People say I 'idolize' Snyder. Not true, I hold a fair and balanced view. The man is neither savior nor saint, but he is, at once, a very successful director, a great contributor to the superhero genre, and said to be a great listener and collaborator on set.

The progressive tendency of the general rate of profit to fall is, therefore, just an expression peculiar to the capitalist mode of production of the progressive development of the social productivity of labour. This does not mean to say that the rate of profit may not fall temporarily for other reasons. But proceeding from the nature of the capitalist mode of production, it is thereby proved a logical necessity that in its development the general average rate of surplus-value must express itself in a falling general rate of profit. Since the mass of the employed living labour is continually on the decline as compared to the mass of materialised labour set in motion by it, i.e., to the productively consumed means of production, it follows that the portion of living labour, unpaid and congealed in surplus-value, must also be continually on the decrease compared to the amount of value represented by the invested total capital. Since the ratio of the mass of surplus-value to the value of the invested total capital forms the rate of profit, this rate must constantly fall.

Snyder fans are kinda understandable, dude makes movies that are stylish and visually interesting, whether you think they're actually good or not. I like Dawn of the Dead best.

The prequel goons though, feel like pure contrarians. Its funny to see how very much they hate the RLM crew, lol. CD prequel goons are why the RLM thread is in GBS.

Son of Thunderbeast posted:

My impression of BvS is that executives wanted an MCU but without laying all the groundwork and individual movies and linking everything up and tried to just shove everything into one movie. BvS and Justice League had potentially at least 6-8 movies' worth of stories crammed into them because DC clearly felt like they had to "catch up"

I don't mind tbh, if they did a slow spool up like Marvel did we'd probably be in the middle of DC's versions of Endgame (i.e. BvS and Justice League's climactic points) and whatnot now

Thing is that's exactly what Snyder was giving them, he even said it was his superhero Lord of the Rings, everything was set up and then WB execs threw the toys out the pram because of twitter takes and literally brought in a sex pest who made the worst MCU movies and told him to do it again

And with Batman and Superman, there are some short cuts / shorthand that could have been taken because those characters have been around for forever in film. Where as marvel characters were not as well known to the general public.
Although the more morally ambiguous superman probably stretched out the learning curve for audiences

the phenomenon where you have to explain at length why you like a bunch of fairly successful films because there's a cottage industry on youtube centred around agreeing that they're bad is objectively very funny. yes, i like batman v superman, the phantom menace, the matrix sequels, prometheus, sherlock, tenet, uhhh, steven universe, who cares. there's no canon and there's definitely not a canon as stupid as this!

I watched modern times again. it’s highly critical of capital and a bit socialist. makes me think of Amazon warehouses in the first 30 min

https://youtube.com/watch?v=17PkUsTVa7g

quote:

Modern Times is a 1936 American silent comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin in which his iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world. The film is a commentary on the desperate employment and financial conditions many people faced during the Great Depression — conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization.

The Tramp works on an assembly line, where he suffers greatly due to the stress and pace of the repetitive work. He eventually suffers a nervous breakdown and runs amok, getting stuck within a machine and throwing the factory into chaos; he is then sent to the hospital. Following his recovery, the now unemployed Tramp is mistakenly arrested in a Communist demonstration. In jail, he accidentally ingests smuggled cocaine, and in his subsequent delirium, he avoids being put back in his cell. When he returns, he stumbles upon a jailbreak and knocks the convicts unconscious for which he is hailed as a hero and given special treatment. When he is informed that he will soon be released due to his heroic actions, he argues unsuccessfully that he prefers life in jail.

I didn’t watch it until like 2015 or so, for a class. one of the best movies I’ve seen at school.

Also a lot of the criticism he's received is about how his movies give vibes that are toxic, randian, cryptofascist, etc... to the point that it became received wisdom among a certain part of the internet to treat everything around him as vaguely reactionary. An assessment of his actual character and politics (which seem to be "generic Hollywood lib" who made a clumsy but earnest movie about Feminism in Cinema 101) should probably enter the picture at some point.
