I also just read it and "give people money, not food, so they can choose stuff" just sounds like more loving market worshipping horseshit.

Like this

quote:

So I can understand why we’re seeing campaigns for a ‘right to food’, from unions and pressure groups alike. But there’s a note of caution to sound. As our membership cards remind us all, democratic socialism is about power, wealth and opportunity. As Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson once put it, it would be “totally inadequate – the reverse of our socialism – to live in a society where many of us had jobs, sufficient food, warm houses, free hot meals for our kids, and free sanitary products, but didn’t have money to spend as we saw fit on anything else. Equality in a free society is about power, not goods”.

Yeah great mate lots of loving power your lot have given us right, wonder why people might be campaigning for enough food to eat, wonder who might have been responsible for that. A society where I'm still skint but I have food and shelter guaranteed sounds a lot loving better than this one.

Maybe but i recall this thread previously reaching a consensus* on how you should donate to the homeless: don't give them sandwiches but give them money, even if you know they might spend it on drugs/alcohol, because giving them sandwiches is very paternalistic and condescending

Iirc the conclusion was to ask if they wanted a sandwich first, then it’s not condescending if they’re like “yeah definitely, chicken and stuffing please”

In the light of the rising moon Vimes saw Ahmed produce a cigarette holder, insert one, and fight up almost fastidiously. 'Do tell.'

'After the attempt on the Prince's life I suspected everyone. But you suspected only your own people. You couldn't bring yourself to think the Klatchians might have done it. Because that'd line you up with the likes of Sergeant Colon and all the rest of the Klatchian-fags–are–made–of–camel–dung brigade.'

...

'Listen to me' hissed Ahmed. 'Prince Cadram ordered his brother's death...What better way to demonstrate the...perfidy of the sausage–eaters...killing a peace–maker...'

'His own brother? You expect me to believe that?'

'Messages were sent to... the embassy in code...'

'To the old ambassador? I don't believe that!'

Ahmed stood quite still for a moment. 'No, you really don't, do you?' he said. 'Be generous, Sir Samuel. Truly treat all men equally. Allow Klatchians the right to be scheming bastards, hmm? ...'

On an individual level, sure, but I don't think that money is a solution to societal precarity, any more than it is a solution to say, societal healthcare. At some point you can't just rely on everyone having jobs and cash to buy what they need, but rather you need to actually look at making food and shelter and all that actually secure. Especially coming from a political organization that had control of the government for a decade+ and didn't do gently caress all to stop the slide into precarity during that time and absolutely failed to build anything lasting beyond it other than loving student debt and PFI contracts.

When a proponent of that political persuasion tells me "actually money will solve the problem" I think they're an idiot, because money doesn't buy long term security for anyone except the generationally wealthy and he sure as poo poo isn't gonna make us into that.

Let's have a look and see what this phil wilson guy is about

quote:

The son of a Fishburn colliery worker, Wilson has lived in the Sedgefield constituency all of his life.[4] After attending Trimdon Secondary Modern and Sedgefield Comprehensive School, Wilson became a shop assistant before moving on to be a clerical worker in the civil service where he was a lay-trade union official.[4] Wilson later worked as a gambling lobbyist for the Gala Coral Group in the lead up to the passing of the 2005 Gambling Act, and as a director at London based public affairs consultancy Fellows’ Associates.[6]

Wilson is known for being one of the "Famous Five", a group of local Labour Party members who helped a young Tony Blair get selected as the Labour candidate for Sedgefield for the 1983 general election.[3] He subsequently worked for Tony Blair in his constituency office, the Labour Party and a PR company.[7]

[...]

Wilson was a Labour Assistant Whip from 2010 to 2015.[8] In 2012, he was elected to the Progress strategy board. In his work for Progress, he was criticised for a blog post that he was accused of plagiarizing.[9]

[...]

In his 2017 general election voter leaflet, Wilson stated he was not a supporter of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and suggested Labour would not win the election.[11] He had supported Owen Smith in the failed attempt to replace Corbyn in the 2016 Labour Party leadership election.[12][better source needed]

In 2018, Wilson called for a second referendum on Brexit. He said: "Before we retreat to the past, people should be given another chance to decide whether that is where they want to end up".[13][14] Later he supported the proposal to join the European Economic Area to mitigate the perceived disadvantages of Brexit.[15][better source needed] Wilson's constituency of Sedgefield voted to Leave the European Union by 59.4%.[16]

Cannot imagine why this guy would dislike the idea of guaranteeing people's food security.

"Unity, prosperity, and security" sounds more like the kind of slogan that was rejected by fascists for being too dull.

I think it was the FT that had an article saying the Tories always get voted in for promising to save the country from the terrible state the Tories have left it in.

E: in international news, here in China:

1) Shanghai employers have been blanket refusing to hire anyone who has **ever** had a positive COVID test; some of the poorest workers have been reduced to camping out in public toilets.

2) Our great leader who is up for re-selection in October has a new slogan: “一个国家一个政党一个领袖” (One Nation, One Party, One Leader).

Some policy ideas there for the Tory hopefuls I guess
