The swamp's super cool for about the first 20 minutes, and then you've seen everything it has to offer and it's an agonizingly samey slog forevermore. The game requires you to spend far, far too much time in the swamp to get kitted up for Bonemass/Mountains. Next time I start a character from scratch I'll probably use Valheim+ to jack up how much iron you get from scrap piles.

Swamp would be OK if abominations had a smaller aggro range, and you didn't have to go back to the biome to farm even more iron for padded armor after beating mountains.

I think it is atmospheric, moody, has a nice new challenge, has good loot, and way overstays its welcome.

It is also super satisfying to terraform and create paths through, especially lit torches marking the way. But the complete inability to mitigate the rain even when you come back 2 tiers later (and you need to) really drags.

I think meadows + black forest is the peak of Valheim. Swamp is okay. Mountains are terrible. And plains are just too dangerous to enjoy.

I found some small plains island in the ocean and covered it with workbenches. It's very nice biome if you don't have to worry about enemies.

No, I liked that it slowed progression down and you it helped a lot to plan and organize with friends. Was disappointed to see how easy/quick the mountains and plains were. Was hoping they would have been as difficult or more difficult a jump than forest to swamp was.

same except swamp. i forgot how loving anti-fun the swamp is, just pure, miserable garbage grind, and it's even worse solo. think imma wait till they finish mistlands and maybe i can play the update with a group again. its so easy to fix, too... 10-20 iron + goo + ancient bark = rain cape, prevents rain from getting you wet. give it lovely armor value to balance it out, easy.

Yeah this or some kind of oilskin mead that negates the Wet effect would be really great.

I survive in plains by making sky citadels on the top of the rock spires. Bonus if you can find two or three close enough together to make a huge foundation. Build a stairway up the side of the spire and then destroy a gap you can jump over but enemies can’t. That foundation does require a lot of swamp and iron though. To protect what I can at ground level for flax and such it’s a combination of multiple layered stone walls on top of raised earth. It’s definitely a Project though and nothing can compete with the coziness of the Meadows, even during storms it’s pleasant to be in.

Swamps are fun for what they are on a play through. I dislike coming back over and over slogging through swamp dungeons getting pestered by stuff I'm two tiers past because I have to farm for more iron.

Edit for plains skybases: Don't fight the boss near pillars you built your base on. Homeboy's beam attack chews that poo poo up and when it gets disconnected by a cross section the entire pillar bursts in to stone and collapses, destroying the temp base you built up top with a portal in it for respawns during the fight.

Yeah, mountains just feel rushed to me, even with the addition of caves. And plains are flat out missing on content IMO. They feel empty.

It would be neat to see more variety within the biomes, even if it is just an A/B option. Like a hot/cold version of the swamp that looks a little different and has different resources and wildlife that are equivalent in tier level. Or alternatively more 'setpiece' locations with abnormal mobs/resources like the draugr villages in meadows for the other zones.

Yes.
The swamp is dreary and miserable and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's very much a "love to hate it" kinda deal. Once in a while I get cocky and make a mistake and die there despite being pretty well geared, and I just go "Lmao loving swamp I swear to god" and go on another corpse run.

How much time you have to spend in it is also heavily dependent on whether you find a convenient big swamp with lots of crypts. If you do, it's really not that bad, especially with friends. But if all you can easily find are stupid narrow swamps with very few crypts you might have to spend a lot of time running around.

Don't get me wrong, I like the actual general aesthetic of the swamp and the enemy & geographic design, but the unstoppable rain and iron grind turn it into a garbage biome. I can kill multiple draugr just fine, but killing multiple draugr while dodging leeches while wet kinda sucks, finding crypts is a pain in the rear end half the time, and then you have to drag a billion iron home by boat. just really not that fun.

At least for the first time you could just build a forge and home near the swamps. A lot of iron stuff you need is just gear so you don't need to carry the iron home if you can make it there.

The latter runs where you're hauling fucktons of iron for your far-off plains base do suck though.

But I like making little landing jetties and fishing villages and poo poo and making roads through the swamps and nailing boards over emptied crypts so even that feels kinda therapeutic.

BIG VINCE COMIN FOR YOU
My problem with the swamp is that you need to deal with it long after it’s any challenge. Plains gear needs iron, and by the time you’re doing plains things you probably have poison pots out the rear end, a poo poo ton of EHP, and some decent weapons. Nothing poses a challenge or is interesting, it’s just a grind of “welp hope this swamp map generated large enough to contain some crypts.”

My experience is definitely colored negatively because I fall into the camp of “had really bad swamp RNG” on my map, and ended up having to scout multiple swamps before finding enough for the group.

The oppressive environment really hits the nail on the head - it’s not supposed to be a fun place to be, and it does this well at a time where the player is feeling pretty strong after wrapping up the forest. But it’s also the first biome where the game really feels undercooked. The mountains have the same problem, but they’re more bearable since the environment and terrain itself is beautiful and amazingly fun to traverse.

I like swamps and I've built houses in them before. I think getting a wolf/lox cape helps a lot because at night time you only have the wet effect when outside. When I get into a crypt I always make a quick campfire to dry out and (if needed) get the 3 comfort rested effect (just pop a squat next to your campfire).

I also dig out the fire geysers to make surtling core/coal harvesting trivial.

Honestly building a fortified FOB with a portal in the swamp and a large bonemass fighting arena was the best choice we ever made. Also just levelling out the swamp terrain with hoe and planks so you don't end up slogging through water constantly. Made doing iron runs way easier too.

On the server we had with mods, I found a swamp with a dozen surtling pits. I dropped a 4 wide row of stone walls as a path and made a loop through the whole thing, it's pretty funny how efficient that is at making roads vs wood, because the walls will almost always be touching ground somewhere

What are some of your favourite mods that y'all use?

I can't stand mods that add incongruous assets and as a result my mod list is boringly barebones:
  • Valheim Plus
  • CameraMod (love being able to zoom right into first person view)
  • Immersive Hud
  • NoLensDirt (boggles my mind that there's no official option to disable this effect)

I use the any portal mod, the mod that let's you harvest and plant in bulk (so clicking on one plant will trigger everything in a short radius, and planting creates up to a 5 x5 grid if you have the seeds and stamina), and the one that let's you build from chests so you don't have to keep loving with inventory.

I like it because it saves a ton of wasted time doing mundane tasks, and only the portal one affects the resource economy of the game.
