i'm pretty sure that manatees actually love being pet. like I understand why the laws are there to protect them from dumbasses and to keep them from adopting unnatural behaviors, but they are super curious and seem to like touch a lot. you're allowed to touch them if they make contact with you first, but only with one hand. as soon as you put two hands on the manatee it's considered 'riding' it.

Yeah, same with any marine mammal. Feed and pet them and they get too comfortable around people and their stuff. Like spinning propellers. Can speak to this from experience. My research was on dolphins in the local rivers. One dolphin got too used to getting handouts and ended up getting run over and sliced up. Really, those rules about interacting with the wildlife are there for a reason.

We have springs where you can swim with manatees in a controlled environment. You’re not allowed to approach or touch them, just let them come to you. They’re generally very gentle and may be curious and friendly. Probably more chill than capybaras.
