NGL I have been looking at this thing all day. I think I want one. I'm trying to decide if I'm willing to part with my SFG JEM to get one. It's one of the guitars I pick up least frequently, but it's my metal machine (if I ever play any) because I put a Crunch Lab in it. Last time I thought about putting it on reverb I went to put some notes on it and I couldn't put it down, decided I could never let it go. Not to mention it is the guitar made infamous by the Ugly Guitars/Stupid Music poo poo thread so I kinda need to own it. If I was working I wouldn't be thinking about letting it go, but people are paying good money for used gear.

And I don't have any roasted maple necks! This would be my first.

I'll just wait. It's definitely on my list. Except I still need a Les Paul with P90s. Dammit.

Tonight I am playing with the Andy Timmons "Halo" modulated & diffused delay. I don't have the pedal, I looked up the settings. 375ms/500ms stereo with modulation for chorusy repeats and diffusion to make it 'verby. The AxeFX has all of those parameters right there so it's super easy to get there in the Plex 'Verb block set to stereo tape delay. Makes me wish I knew some of those neat jazzy chords Eric Johnson likes to play with his ambient delays.

And, landgrabber, you may want to contact Fender about the issues you’re having. When I had some fret issues with a Cordoba, they covered the repair costs as it was still under warranty. Some wouldn’t be, as you’ve modified the guitar, but some might.

anyway real question, cause i’m about to go home and do the rest of a setup:

seems like i didn’t completely mask the fretboard from the frine too well. there’s some left over around a couple frets. it’s a glossy maple board.

what do i do to get that off?

still looking for a solution to this -- want to just suck it up and string it up again and get back to the important shituntil i have the money to sort it out.

or did i simply gently caress up all my frets lol

my long term memory did kick in and i guess i should've taken it more seriously where like

when i went to see faust, he did an inspection and was like "oh these frets aren't really leveled" and did a bit of work.

then when i went to see the weird guitar center luthier lady, she was like "oh these frets aren't really leveled" and did a bit of work.

so it's probably just the area of mexican fender QC where i ate poo poo this time.

next time i get some money i'll try to find the best luthier in my general area, go see 'em, and see if they can give the frets some special attention

OK sorry for triple post, BUT: detective rose figures something else out:

the frets that are bad? like that have divots or flatter spots on them?

well i looked at the ends of them, from either side of the neck. and they're really shittily glued in, it seems like.

that's where the bulk of "frine i can't clean" is. there're cracks in the finish on the sides of the neck, around the frets, i guess because they've been moving around.

now-- is this something that could've happened as a result of use?

i didn't do anything insane with it, but living in a humid area, with extreme temperature changes. it's not so bad in my house, but i would do things like, put it in a gig bag, put it in my car for an hour or two, where it'd get really hot, then take it out in a cold room -- because i was taking it to school to use for jazz band practice. could that have caused frets to move around? all the heat? or is it just a remnant of lovely factory work

Just those specific ones have that issue? Either way doesn't sound unfixable in anyway, just definitely needs an experienced tech to take a look and probably give the frets a quick level. And definitely not a user problem.

landgrabber
Sep 13, 2015

there's wear everywhere, for sure, but it's way worse and more flat/dented on those that are clearly not glued in well.

i'm back on the telecaster and looking at it, and even though the fret ends are hilariously dull, they're not nearly as high. there're no dents in anything, even though this guitar has been through WAY more abuse.

also i guess i really am meant for humbuckers, because with the JB it's way easier for me to get lovely high notes to sound alongside everything else while distorted, on the telecaster pickups it seems to compress way earlier. i feel like it's easier to feel the really lush voicings i like to play with the humbucker.

Huh does sound pretty sus but I bet a tech will still get it sorted. As far as the single coil vs JB, I don't know what exact pickup your tele has, but lower end ones tend to have ceramic magnets for that more compressed sound and the JB is probably lower output and has an alnico 5 magnet which definitely wouldn't sound as compressed as a ceramic humbucker

As far as removing polishing residue goes just like any other fretboard cleaning an old toothbrush and some naphta(zippo fluid) and some scrubbing should take care of it.

I really wanna say something sweeping and generalized but I know I shouldn't. So specifically, my late 80s Kramer Striker 300ST, an absolutely irredeemable piece of garbage (perfect for paying your dues on), came with truly awful Schaller single coils in the mid/neck positions. They squealed microphonically at any volume above a whisper. But they sounded gorgeous isolated. As long as the neck single has enough treble, I'm gonna dig it. There is something magical about the pick attack, that quack. It transcends tones and genres. It owns over a 12-bar blues with clean sustain just as well as cranked through a Marshall stack and given the Yngwie treatment. A lot of guitarists just... live there. And I get that.
The trick to making a bad-to-mid neck pickup sound good is in your picking hand. Pick it hard, like you're loving pissed at it. Snap the string up with your fingertip or thumb. Behave as though you want to break the string.

Reminds me: Check your pickup heights! Not up to writing a thesis on that atm but sometimes that set of pickups just needs to back off or come up a bit to really suck you in.

I'm allowing myself some GAS as a treat because I start lessons tomorrow. After trying my dad's Washburn 335-like, I really want a Gibson ES-335 but I'm not paying $3000 for one. I also learned there's no way in hell I could ever switch to righty. I can't even play a D chord without muting multiple strings even after a few days of trying.

Debating trying to build one vs waiting for this year's Epiphones to come out and basically replacing everything. I'd love to find a used Casino or Sheraton II or something but curse the southpaw market for being so limited!

Factor in ~$75 shipping to the US and the fact that it's a 335 so it's going to be a huge pain in the rear end to upgrade any of the electronics. For the price difference you could probably afford to upgrade all the electronics, the tuners, and the nut and have a luthier do the dirty work for you.

BonHair

The 335 seems like it wouldn't be horrible to just restring as a leftie, but I don't know if the controls would be in the way of playing. The easy life as a rightie has never given me any chance to try out any upside down guitars except trying to play left handed on my right handed guitars (I am not ambidextrous either).

The controls would probably be annoying but manageable. It depends on play style and how fat you are, if you got a big gut your arm is probably gonna be resting on your guitar right where the controls are.

"That must weigh heavily on your soul. Let me purge it for you."
On the topic of southpaws, how common is it for left handed players to learn to just play on a right-handed guitar, with regular right-handed stringing? I ask because I saw Pearl Jam in London last week and as part of the encore they did Rockin in the Free World and were joined by John McEnroe, playing on a tele I'm pretty sure Stone (right handed) had been playing earlier, only upside-down. Not out of the question someone restrung it I suppose but a quick Google search shows him mostly playing a left handed Les Paul. To be clear; John McEnroe can definitely play guitar, just noticing that sent me down a rabbit hole a bit.

Also; I *think* I have my Gretsch sorted out with it's new pickups. It's not the most pronounced difference but manipulation of the volume dials show the pickups are being used correctly. Did have a moment where I picked it up again for one more check and it had no output at all, but I quickly found it's because the wires are the sort where the outer sheaf is metallic and needs to be soldered to ground, which I was able to do, but turns out if any part of the wire touches the bottom of a pot or something it will stop working. A quick wire tie seems to have sorted that.

One thing though; I find dialing *either*volume down past a certain point mutes both pickups, is that normal? I never noticed before, might be intentional if it seems odd, but it means I can't mute one and use the switch as a kill switch. Not a big deal really, although I'll look for normally clad wiring in future.

It's not super common but it happens. Dick Dale did it that way, I think Albert King did as well. Just using GIS McEnroe does NOT typically play lefty-strung-righty but it's a pretty simple song, he might have just put up with it if that was the only guitar available. Maybe their guitar tech restrung it real quick. I can play passably for something simple like that upside down but don't expect arpeggios or solos or anything.

Perhaps! The rule of thumb I use is: if the temperature is uncomfortable for a human like me, its bad to expose the guitar to it, so two hours baking in a hot car is probably harmful, especially if you made a habit of it.

The Yamaha mentioned a couple of pages ago seems like something that might suit me. I pretty much want to be able to pick up guitar, push button and play. No faffing about with wires and cables. Bluetooth input and being able to output to a PC is a bonus.

Similar things seem to be the Katana Air and Vox Adio Air.

All these seem to be a few years old now - how often do they release new models? It'd be just typical for me to pick one up and then something better comes out a month later.

This was a hard rock/metal band, so it seemed weird until I realised that that's how upside down power chords look. The guitar was a leftie, but strung as a rightie. I guess he learned to play that way?

I think it is a testament to just how loving hard guitar is that it maybe doesn't really matter how you approach it physically, you still have a chance of getting gud if you put 10,000 hours on it. Lefties soldier through some hosed up issues but hell, look at Jeff Healey! You can listen to all those lefties and JH too, and damned if the blues box phrasing doesn't just sound the same.
