The generous interpretation is they don't really want to shoot at anything so they're just firing off at nothing. Not sure that holds up though since they gotta come down somewhere and they could just as easily fire them all into an empty field or whatever within normal range.

Reminds me of a story about some royal engineers (iirc) (fake edit: actually mightve been a us unit) in africa driving around with a truck full of italian mines that had supposedly been deactivated. "Instantly vaporized" and "nothing left", were also part of the description.

I've noticed several instances of remote turret gunners aiming high to account for drop, do these systems not have range finders and ballistic computers to automatically adjust the crosshairs? Even then why not at least use a rangefinding reticule instead of a simple crosshair to help with holdover?
