after twenty years somebody is finally doing it; this fall we are getting a freeshard DAOC server with (optional, if server population drops) seasons. If people get bored and drop off, they're going to reset everybody's level, you keep all your realm points (pvp) and they'll start raising the cap slowly from the start again, so everybody's on a level playing field. The daoc community suffers from this cyclical thing where people leave a server, it dies, then somebody else starts one up, generally every year or so. so we're already doing seasons

There's a not-unreasonable possibility that the League MMO might jumpstart interest in the genre again, but anything even MMO-adjacent right now is some flavor of live service or DoA Kickstarter stuff.

Airship Syndicate (Battlechasers and Ruined King) also just announced they’re making an MMO published by Digital Extremes (Warframe). Not saying it’ll be good but those are two studios that do know how to make video games at least.

There's been rumors about the Riot MMO for ages which indicates that some level of work was being done, and I don't think they poached Ghostcrawler from Blizzard or did the big lore revamp years ago just for the sake of League itself. That said, they only picked a guy for Game Director a few months ago and last I checked, they still had openings for stuff like Senior Combat Designer and Senior AI Designer. Optimistically 2024, realistically 2025.

If I recall correctly he just put out a tweet thread where he was like "aw gee I'm in all these pictures with sexual predators in the cosby suite but I had no idea what was going on!" and I think there was some accusations & evidence that he did but no direct accusations that he himself participated so in the endless firehose of blizzard sexual harrassment and assault allegations everyone just kind of forgot about it

Ghostcrawler never had any specific allegations aimed at him in either the Blizzard or Riot cases beyond being associated with the whole Cosby Suite thing at Blizzard. Of course, being a lead guy at one studio accused of rampant sexual misconduct and then becoming an executive at another studio accused of rampant sexual misconduct is Not a Good Look.

While the near future of the genre is a wasteland, Palia still exists and isn't massively overpromising or run by an MLM scammer. They havent officially announced a release date, but it'll probably by mid-late 2023.
