Wasn't Stuart Wellington a guest DM once on a live show or bonus episode? Or just a special guest PC?

it’s a McElroy product, so I assume that the Ghostbusters you’re referring to is Ghostbusters 2016

Guest DM on the yearly "hosts swap podcasts" thing for MaxFunCon like... 2016 or something. Only two episodes had them actually playing D&D.

Stu eventually went on to do more FlopTales bonus episodes on their own Flop House feed, but they were more weird tales Gum Shoe themed using Powered by the Apocalypse, however all of the characters are similar to their D&D counterparts. Including Tanzer, who is amazing.

And yes, Stu is his cohost players are far better at this poo poo because a) Stu is a great DM and b) the other players kind of don't give a poo poo about the games, so it has a lot of "everyone is Clint McElroy trying to play an RPG" energy and less try-hard Travis bullshit.

I ran a Dungeon World game a while back and one of my players brought a 3rd party class, the Merchant Prince. Worthless in combat, it had a whole mechanic about gaining and spending Capital to hire people to protect them or to tip social interactions in their favor or to acquire rare equipment. It ended up being a lot of fun!

Critically, Travis showed up to Balance with a page of backstory that proceeded to get brought up never and was entirely plot irrelevant

The first 20 minutes of the GM talk between Brennan, Aabria, and Matt was all about setting up a game and characters and backstory. Short version is pre-establishing PC relationships and character traits is the most important part. Back story is crucial in that it provides momentum, but that's basically it's only real purpose.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmZSWKPXhZ4

I would say that maybe the largest issue with all TAZ is that it seems like they create their characters without talking to each other first. Or they publish their session 0 as episode 1 so they feel like they are somewhat tied down to their first (possibly bad) idea.

^^^Oh yea this too, they clearly don't do a session zero so it's literally just 'welp whatever you bring independent of each other becomes your 'thing' recorded forever online to a large audience'

Empty Sandwich posted:

yea it feels like this sums up why I haven't been able to care about any TAZ stuff since the first one. This is just so weird and anti-RPG to me. Like, it's one thing to say 'yea you don't need to toss a whole book of backstory to me' but I have no idea how this is supposed to be anywhere near interesting combined with them clearly not planning characters together. You're just making three NPCs and throwing them together at that point.

Magnus's backstory was useless and out of character and Devo's backstory hosed up the whole game, so I imagine he's trying to curtail that. (Travis writing too much is basically what hosed up his DMing arc, too.)

most of the interesting details come out in play in their style of... uh, play. Amber's level of backstory seemed about right. like, they basically need just enough to hang an improv performance on. it's better to be blank than bring too much baggage, I'd argue. Zooks was completely tabula rasa and had an interesting arc, although there's a narrative reason for that.

I'm agreeing with what you both said, despite the fact that I'm doing a bad job of saying that. there was basically no narrative reason for Amber and Devo not to fistfight and then never talk again.

Exactly this - and this happened in the early part of the Rusty Quill Gaming Podcast, the players and GM realised that two of the characters were just fundamentally incompatible and would never hang around together so one of the characters left the group and the player created a new character. At some point that's just what you've got to do rather than just keep trying to force it to work.
