I really liked it. It reminds me of a dramatic take on Bourdain, and shows like Mind of a Chef and Chef's Table. I love that poo poo.

I have a friend whose career has been in the food industry, and owns a few high end restaurants and bars in Detroit, and he's been raving about the show, talking about how accurate it is to working in a kitchen.

Blind Fury is on prime and if you havent seen it it's def a top 80s shlock action comedy recommend, honestly kinda underrated
Rutger Hauer as Vietnam vet Zaitoichi, Terry O'Quinn making blue meth in Reno for a tyrannical casino owner, Tex Cobb chewing cigars and being a great heavy, Sho Kasugi as an evil assassin, and just a whole cast of colorful goons to be dispatched (including a scene-stealing turn from Nick Cassavetes and Rick Overton as a pair of hick henchmen brothers). Pretty great sense of fun n humor too.

i can see the argument that it became too driven by the characters' quirks, but at the same time, what else should quirky ensemble character shows be about

like to me Parks and Rec is the platonic ideal of a show that did exactly what it set out to do

It's a Sin is phenomenal. Short British series about the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. I never cry, and I ugly sobbed a couple times during the show.

Seconding Watchmen, but you should be aware of all of the main HBO shows over the last 22 years. Six Feet Under especially. Euphoria is a standout from the last few years. And The White Lotus.

But if you're looking specifically to HBO Max shows, which I think are supposed to be separate from HBO? Or do they air on regular HBO also?

Of those, Raised by Wolves is a bonkers SciFi show from Ridley Scott, you'll either love it or hate it. Sadly, it got the axe after two seasons, so a bunch of mysteries aren't likely to ever be answered.

Station Eleven was a very satisfying show to watch, if you can tolerate a show about a global pandemic. It's about a traveling theater group who goes around the Great Lakes after civilization fell following a pandemic.

Julia, a biographical drama about Julia Child was fun at first, but I stopped watching about halfway through because it got tiresome.

Season 1 of The Flight Attendant was a lot of fun, about a drunk flight attendant who gets caught up in some big murder mystery with international espionage. I couldn't get through season 2 though.

Generation is a less successful version of Euphoria by Lena Dunham. Justice Smith is the standout in the cast, and worth watching if you like him.

Made for Love was interesting in concept and less so in execution about a woman who marries a billionaire tech genius, and her attempts to escape from the marriage. Stars Christin Milioti (the mom from how I met your mother), and Ray Romano (ray from everyone loves raymond).

And Just Like That is the sequel series to Sex and the City. It's simultaneously insufferable, but I also didn't want it to end. The returning characters have become incredibly obnoxious, and the most compelling characters are the new ladies added to the cast.

Peacemaker is a DC superhero show from James Gunn, and a spinoff of Suicide Squad. It took me some time to get into it, but it got legit good by the end. It also has the most bonkers opening credits of any show I've ever seen.

Minx is a decent enough show about a feminist woman in the 70s who works with a porn publisher to create a woman's porno magazine. Lots of prosthetic penises attached to real men. Has Jake Johnson and Lennon Parham.

What Happened, Brittany Murphy is a biographical documentary about the life and death of, Brittany Murphy. Very sad.

Legendary is a fun reality competition show about voguing and ball culture. Phenomenal display of queer culture.

Starstruck is a very charming and funny show about a normal Kiwi woman who meets and falls in love with an incredibly handsome movie star.

Search Party, brought over from TBS, is a very funny show about a friend group of narcissistic millennials who become involved in the search of a woman they barely knew in college. Becomes more unhinged as the show goes on. Definitely worth watching. Stars Alia Shawkat and John Early.

And finally, I can't recommend The Other Two enough. Brought over from Comedy Central. I haven't laughed as hard as I do with this show. Its created by former SNL co-headwriters Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider. It's about two siblings who moves to NYC to try and make it big in the entertainment industry, and have utterly failed. Then their younger tween brother becomes an overnight Justin Bieber like sensation, and they've become the other two. Incredibly funny, stars Drew Tarver, Molly Shannon, and Ken Marino.

Great rundown. Station Eleven is a wonderful limited series. Beautiful story telling and was with pre pandemic so it's not some cheap cash in.

Search party is amazing. Just bonkers poo poo that I try to recommend to everyone because it is just goes to wild places. Most people just watch a few episodes and say "I don't like these people" and bail but dear God stick with it... It's amazing. Every season is a new gift.

Those are all good recs - I'm especially fond of Search Party and the Other Two - but I also want to throw out The Great Pottery Thrown Down. It's more or less Great British Bake Off except with pottery, and you already know if you want to watch it or not based on that description. Special kudos go to the judge with truly catastrophic hair who frequently cries at peoples, like, tea cups.

EDIT: Oh also Infinity Train is excellent animation. Nice, tight little show, each season is 10 15-minute episodes. Undeniably peaks at Season 3. S4 is fine (and has one great supporting cast member) but it's just a let down after S3.

I haven't watched The Simpsons in many years either, probably 20 years since I last watched regularly, but there was a certain point where they just started focusing on celebrity guest stars, and it was far less interesting for it. I've heard the show has had its ebbs and flows over the years, but yeah.

What's stranger is that Family Guy has been going for like 20 years now. South Park is 25 years old.

Those parts are great, but the series as a whole is obsessed with being so dour and morose and you spend forty minutes an episode in flashbacks of all the traumatizing things that happened to the characters.

And yet, somehow, now it's my fault ...
Money Heist Korea is a peculiar beast - 50% straight from the original and the rest inspured by the new setting (North and South Korea have entered into a cooperative agreement but there's massive distrust and inequality). In some ways this adds to or fixes issues with the original and in other ways it takes away. There's a slight soap opera feel and I swear some of the cast must be from boy bands. But it's short and different enough that I'm on board.

I just finished it and I liked it quite a bit. Far warmer than lukewarm. I think for a season this short we learn a decent amount about the characters, and it's also working with a pretty light touch.

Search Party is absolutely fantastic. I think some people might not like season 3 as much, but even if you don't I think it's worth it to stick around for season 4. Even if you don't go that far, the first two seasons are tremendous too. I think season 1 is still my favorite but each is amazing in its own way.

I thought The Bear was goofy and cliched and full of really obvious telegraphing of all its character development... also it was great. It built up the kind of energy and tension that let me enjoy all the silliness, I didn't only like the show despite all of that stuff.

Yeah, it's very weird. In a lot of ways it's almost a 1:1 remake, in some ways quite different. It did feel quite a bit better paced than the Spanish version, though.

I miss some of things they lost but it is better paced. And some of the casting seems almost inspired - like they looked for someone with the same vibe as the original character. And, maybe it's my imagination, but the negotiator character seems a lot stronger. In the original, she's constantly fighting to be heard and having the robbers run rings around her.

It is indeed fantastic. One of the better book adaptations I’ve ever seen done. It’s quite different from the book too (basically all good) so if you want to read the book for, basically, an alt universe take on the show - I’d definitely recommend it even after seeing the show.

There was an episodes of Scriptnotes (screenwriting podcast) the other day that had the showrunner on and I was so excited to hear his thoughts on the things he changed. He’s a friend of the author so surely there were gonna be some good stories on the changes…. but instead it was solely about the technical process of getting hired on and shooting in a pandemic etc. Nothing about the creative process. Boooooo.
