Tony Ornato was the Secret Servicr Deputy Assistant Director, left to become Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff of Operations, and then went back to the Secret Service where he is now Assistant Director of the Office of Training.

Get ready for the reporting. James Murray was hand-picked to run the USSS by Trump. I'm not going to start quoting Lawrence O'Donnell of all people, I am content to wait a few days for the news to catch up.

Is there any sharp line the committee would be crossing by subpoenaing James Murray?

I'm a bit late to the party, but what? Nevermind how suspicious the text messages being wiped is, what the hell is that bit about no after-action reports being filed for Jan 6th? There's a massive riot at the capitol building while Congress is in session and the VP is directly, openly being targeted, with the stated purpose of overturning the results of the 2020 election. The president himself eggs them on and then - repeatedly - insists on marching up to the capitol with the rioters, a thing which he's told, also repeatedly, is not safe, by the Secret Service (amongst others). There are weapons in the crowd that showed up to listen to Trump's speech, and Trump told them to let the armed protesters into his rally. When they won't let him go to the capitol to lead the insurrectionists into the House chamber, he attempts to take control of the car and then assaults one of them.

Meanwhile, all of congress has to be evacuated while the building has already been breached, and, when escorted out, the Vice President refuses to get into the car that's going to take him to a safe location, choosing instead to remain sheltering in a building overrun with a bloodthirsty mob calling for his head.

Nobody filed a report? No one? No one thought to maybe write that one up?

Yeah, that alone just rolled me into the "fire absolutely everyone" camp, because holy poo poo.

Interesting. From electoral vote:

[quote]House with 157 members—praised Mike Pence for his courage in certifying the 2020 election. As readers well know, Trump cheered on the mob that wanted to hang Pence. This suggests that some Republicans are coming to realize that there is strength in numbers and if over 150 Republicans band together to support Pence (and implicitly oppose Trump), they can get away with it and live to tell about it. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) even stood up during the meeting and told Pence: "I just want to say thank you for defending our Constitution. I'm happy to shout it from Mar-A-Lago to Bedminster but I just want you to know how grateful we are." Make no mistake about it. This is a direct attack on Trump from a conservative Texas Republican, something unthinkable 6 months ago. And the assembled Republicans clapped after Roy finished speaking. So it may be that the hearings are (indirectly) having an effect on congressional Republicans as well as on Republican strategists (see above item). It is perhaps noteworthy that Pence was invited to address the RSC by its chairman, Jim Banks (R-IN), a solid (?) Trumpist./[quote]

REMIND ME AGAIN HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE?
For those Republicans still playing ~game theory~, too, Trump's power to harm them has seemed diminished recently. Although he still has the power to clear the field and give a massive boost to one candidate in a crowded race, his endorsements of challengers to established incumbents were not particularly successful this primary season. I don't expect any of them to suddenly grow a courage, but the stakes for failing to show up for Trump in minor ways aren't as severe as they may once have been.

I think it depends where and when. The hardline trumpist are still winning primaries especially when they are crowded or tight because the chud base still loves trump. Mastriano and Cox and oz and others have won. The question now is if they win the general in purple/bluish purple states and I think a lot of the big ghouls and poobahs are waiting to see what happens in the midterms(beyond the house) and probably what the committee will show. My belief is trump will run and the party will split between him and desantis or whoever and see where that all goes.

DHS OIG knew the SS texts were purged as early as February but informed no one. At least four separate committees have requested them, not only the J6 committee.
DHS OIG is now instructing USSS not to conduct their own investigation alleging it will interfere with theirs.

quote:

First on CNN: DHS inspector general tells Secret Service to stop investigating potentially missing texts
CNN — The Department of Homeland Security inspector general has directed the Secret Service to stop its internal investigations into what happened to text messages related to January 6 that may have been deleted, according to a letter reviewed by CNN.

The inspector general wrote that the Secret Service should stop investigating the matter because it could interfere with the inspector general’s own investigation into what happened to the agency’s text messages.

The letter adds to the growing tension between the Secret Service and the DHS inspector general over the potentially missing text messages, which are being sought by the House select committee as part of its investigation into former President Donald Trump’s actions and movements on January 6, 2021.

“To ensure the integrity of our investigation, the USSS must not engage in any further investigative activities regarding the collection and preservation of the evidence referenced above,” DHS deputy inspector general Gladys Ayala wrote in a letter to Secret Service Director James Murray on Wednesday evening. “This includes immediately refraining from interviewing potential witnesses, collecting devices or taking any other action that would interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation.”

The inspector general wrote that the Secret Service should explain what interviews had already been conducted related to the text messages, along with the “scope off the questioning, and what, if any, warnings were given to the witness(es).” The inspector general told the Secret Service to respond by Monday.

The new letter comes after the Secret Service was only able to provide a single text message to the inspector general, who had requested a month’s worth of records for 24 Secret Service personnel, according to a letter to the select committee.

CNN has reached out for comment to the Secret Service and the DHS inspector general.

The directive could complicate the Secret Service’s response to a subpoena it received from the House select committee last week, as well as a request from the National Archives this week to the DHS records officer asking the agency to clear up if the text messages were deleted and explain why.

The select committee’s chairman, Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, wrote in a letter to the Secret Service director that the panel was seeking text messages from January 5-6, 2021.

In a joint statement Wednesday, Thompson and committee vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney said they “have concerns” about how the Secret Service cell phone data was deleted.

“The procedure for preserving content prior to this purge appears to have been contrary to federal records retention requirements and may represent a possible violation of the Federal Records Act,” they said.

The Secret Service told the committee this week that it was engaged in “extensive efforts” to determine whether any text messages had been lost and if they were recoverable. Those steps included “the pulling of any available metadata to determine what, if any, texts were sent or received on the devices of the identified individuals,” the agency said in a letter, as well as interviewing the 24 individuals “to determine if messages were stored in locations that were not already searched by the Secret Service.”

The agency said it was “currently unaware of text messages issued by Secret Service employees” that were requested by the inspector general “that were not retained.”

The group of 24 individuals includes high-ranking officials, several of whom remained in a secure location, known as a SCIF (secured compartmentalized information facility) during the day where cellphones are not permitted, according to a source familiar with the matter. The source also said about half of the individuals are being reviewed to determine if text messages were sent and received and possibly deleted, and what that content may have been.

Investigators determined that at least three of the people had only personal text messages, which they did not consider a public record, while investigators believe others have no text messages at all, the source said. The agency has produced one relevant text exchange so far, which it has given to the inspector general and the committee. The Secret Service told the inspector general last year that aside from the single text message, the agency “did not have any further records responsive” to the request.

The inspector general has alleged that the Secret Service erased text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, not long after they had been requested by oversight officials investigating the Secret Service’s response to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, according to a letter that the inspector general sent to the House select committee.

The Secret Service has previously explained that it was up to employees to conduct the necessary preservation of records from their phones. The letter said the service did provide personnel a “step-by-step” guide to preserve mobile phone content, including text messages, prior to the phone migration that began January 27, 2021. It went on to explain that “all Secret Service employees are responsible for appropriately preserving government records that may be created via text messaging.”

Historically, the big problem with dealing with elite military groups dedicated to the government's defense, like the Praetorian Guard or the Janissaries, wasn't that they were disloyal and meddled with politics. It's that they were wary of any moves that might diminish their power and influence in any way, and would happily coup any emperor that showed even the slightest intention of reining them in. Proposing sweeping measures like disbanding the group or creating a more trustworthy alternative force were a quick route to getting assassinated.

So if we really think the Secret Service is so far gone as to be compared to the Praetorians, then carelessly engaging in hasty action isn't good. And if the Secret Service isn't that far gone and this is just a small group, then firing absolutely everyone will radicalize them and increase the disloyal faction's power.
