The real leftward shift was post-2008. Preceding that, we had a lot of libertarians going on and on about libertarianism. I personally remember all the unironic Ron Paul stuff in his 2008 run. Then the housing bubble burst, the Enron scandal came out, the 2008 recession hit, which never ended for some people. That broke the brains of half of them and they managed to push out most of the other half afterwards. Every once in a while, you'll get some longstanding goon giving some personal variant on that story when this comes up. Personally, I have just held consistently to my beliefs in shitposting.

https://twitter.com/Forrest4Trees/status/1550511080749035522 e: actually good lord quote:The problem, according to Lawrence, is that the appraisers had trouble finding sales-price data for homes as large and expensive as his. The comps, he argues, “are just not comparable in terms of neither value nor square footage. I mean, I think the square footage is like half our house and also the prices are in the $2 million [range].” Those in the, shall we say, "broad-based" housing market. further E: maybe I am a stalinist now zoux fucked around with this message at 19:06 on Jul 22, 2022 |

quote:After a representative for the appraisal district counters with a $782,214 value, Lippman offers a counter-counter-proposal: $490,574, in line with the 54 percent median increase of home values countywide. The chair is unconvinced; he plans to side with the district. “I know for a fact that land has been undervalued for the last few years in Travis County. It’s just caught up with people. That’s just a fact of life.” But the other two members of the panel—apparently unimpressed with the “outlier” comp—settle on $490,574, and the chair ends up agreeing. The vote is 3–0. coward chair

so I wasn't on the specific panels he sat in on but all of those stories are incredibly close to what I've experienced. the commercial panels are way better to be on because the cases are drier, the owners don't represent themselves, and there's no emotion. i've had a couple ornery chairs that do not get along with either the owner or district rep and those hearings are torture for austin-centric politics, I have worked a significant number of those Lake Austin properties that carried a tax exemption up until 1-2 years ago. the owners all represent themselves and it basically goes like the article says: quote:He is articulate, composed, and well prepared—and, in the end, utterly unconvincing. i say swears online fucked around with this message at 19:31 on Jul 22, 2022 |

Enron was a bigger deal for California anyways, because it caused rolling blackouts there.hawowanlawow posted:I heard that the A1 thick and hearty burger is the unhealthiest burger in America, but I have my doubts It was my favorite thing at Whataburger, and now it's gone now. There wasn't anything exceptional about it health-wise so far as burgers go, just onions, bacon, cheese, burger, sauce, bun. Not like the extra vinegar is that bad for you. Then they got rid of the mushroom swiss burger and I think Whataburger just hates me personally now.
