I've never even seen a photograph of early Soviet computer mainframes, so this video was a treat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnHdqPBrtH8

That's some wood paneling for sure.

It tickles me to think that there was a moment in the 1950s where Soviet computers really were a bit ahead of Western alternatives, before they fell behind due to systemic issues with the Soviet state. It also gave me a chuckle that what really sunk Soviet computing was the political decision to just copy the IBM/360.

The coffee cup spends most of its time on my desk...holding random screws, loose allen wrenches, those plastic adapters for microSD cards that nobody ever needs anymore, and so on.

So I am part of a group that plays out of print physical media versions of movies, Laserdisc being my 'thing'. I've done a few streams with a cheapo Composite capture device and now moved on to S-Video for testing. S-Video being the maximum level of quality available to output, no RGB/Component around.

A little test of Composite, S-Video, then the same S-Video device with a shielded cable:

If I wasn't so lazy this evening I would hook all this stuff up to my main theatre room setup that has a DVDO scaler and see what improvements I get there.

Interesting that the only real difference I can spot is that the ringing around the lady in the background’s arm seems much more prominent in the s-video grabs.

Mr.Radar

You guys aren't going to believe this, but that guy is our games teacher.
LaserDisc is actually a strange format in that using the composite output of a player can produce a better quality image than S-Video because the video on LaserDiscs is inherently composite in nature. This is because LaserDiscs have enough bandwidth to store the raw NTSC/PAL video signal with the color information embedded in it just like broadcast signals. This is in contrast to VHS which needs to store the color information separately (because the relatively low bandwidth of the luma signal in VHS would otherwise strip out the chroma information if you tried to store it in its native embedded form) and DVD which is digital and inherently stores the color information separately. All this means is that if your LaserDisc player has an S-Video output it's doing a conversion to separate the color and luma signals and that conversion (which was probably designed in the 90s) may not be as good as modern signal processors/upscalers can do.

holefoods
Jan 10, 2022

I’ve found that the S-video output on mine gives a moderately better picture than composite on a PVM-1354Q. Presumably the comb filter is better since the tech would be a few years newer on a DVL-909.

If you're still watching laserdisc or VHS in 2022, why would you fuss over what made it look "better"? What is worth watching on VHS or laserdisc at this point that isn't available in better quality in some digital format, even if only through :filez:? And if you have such a collection of good things that are somehow unavailable any other way, surely they'd be too valuable to risk playing?

I guess what I'm saying is, if I went through the trouble to obtain a VHS player and VHS tapes at this point, the relatively poor quality would be part of the aesthetic and I wouldn't bother seeking ways to improve it.

Peanut Butler

its fun to improve things and the last decades of the 20th century left behind a ton of cheap tech to learn about signals with

holefoods
Jan 10, 2022

I kind of think your take on it is stranger. Why accept the lowest quality and treat it as part of the aesthetic? My fascination with laserdisc stems from an appreciation for old high end home theater stuff. Plugging an HDMI cable in to a sound bar and being done with it is boring. I like the fact that you have to have an AC-3 decoder for the 5.1 audio and you have to plug that into your receiver and then you might be dealing with different analog audio/digital audio outputs, and so on. It’s a stupid and over complicated setup that was the best at the time. Sure, a laserdisc isn’t going to give a Blu-Ray a run for its money but it’s just a different experience. Not to mention that most laserdiscs have wonderful 5.1 tracks since they’re direct theater ports instead of near field remixes.

I do see your point if you just want a VCR to watch some crappy old horror tapes you grabbed at goodwill or something, then yeah there’s an aesthetic there. Different people have different interests. Personally I think laserdisc people who hook everything up to their 4K TVs are psychos so I guess this is all a bit hypocritical of me.

The actual original Star Wars trilogy, without all the extraneous garbage that Lucas went back and added in later. And the Blurays are hot garbage.

I mean, even the Despecialized Editions use the laserdiscs as a source, and 4K77 isn't finished yet.

4K77 may not be 'done' but it's already way better than any laserdisc.

It was just called "Star Wars" then.

And I started because I wanted the original Star Wars trilogy after reading on the sources for 4K77/Harmy edits thinking it would be really neat to show my step-father who saw it in the cinema back in the day. I like physical media, some of the box-set editions of some movies are so cool with books and posters etc. After getting the Star Wars it was a slippery slope of 'well now I need a player' and might as well get some more discs while I am at it. Next thing I knew, I ended up with 4 players, over 200 titles including cast autographed Star Trek stuff and one of the grails for LD people; "The Matrix".

The capture stuff I am fiddling with is specifically to dump the US Widescreen pressing of "The Matrix" to do colour comparisions vs all the other physical media releases (which of COURSE I have them all). Heck I've got a legit 35mm frame for this project too...

It's a drug, don't do LDs!

It's probably like modifying old cars, get the most you can from it is a game. It's somewhat fun as someone who used to be in the film making industry wearing many hats from behind the camera to in front of the NLE (AVID Media Composer usually) during the analog to digital transition times.

I can understand the fascination with watching stuff from a certain timeframe in a certain sub-optimal format. My thing is watching terrible old rips of late 90s and early 2000s TV and movies on a 24" Panasonic CRT through composite with my RPie 3. I also loan a bunch of DVDs from the library and watch them on the same telly on a PS2 without the remote. Nostalgia is a weird weird thing.

I had an ex look at my VHS collection one day and said, "you've never watched a single one of these as long as I've known you". I saved my old original Star Wars trilogy and my Das Boot Directors cut, the rest went in the trash.

She was correct, and I've never missed any of them, but my hoarder heart still cries thinking about it.

It's very difficult to keep myself from hoarding things. I really need to sell my video game collectors editions with the dumb figures. They just sit in boxes taking up space. I recently gave my parents my LCD tv that I never use, so now I have room to use my old crt with my N64 and finally have justification for keeping it, as it was sitting in a closet before.
