Finally! A tea for me, labeled with "the representation of World War II warships personified as teenage girls and young adult women with personality characteristics reflecting the history of each ship."

i would be pretty jazzed to be served some green tea by the personification of a japanese destroyer fitted with the legendary type 93 "long lance" anti-ship torpedo

Also was gonna say that.

Serioustalk though, the deeper ones like car mechanic simulator and horrible muddy conditions truck driving simulator are probably genuinely good learning experiences. Like, when I was a kid I played "Life and Death", a horrifically difficult diagnosis-and-surgery simulation game, and consequently as an adult when people have mentioned stomach pain I have twice correctly told people to go to the hospital because it seems like appendicitis, and three times correctly said it seems like just gas, and zero incorrect diagnosis. As a kid I played a 2D top-down truck driving game "Juggernaut" way back in the day on a 48K Spectrum, and as a result I have at least a somewhat functional ability to back up with a trailer, that I would otherwise be just as bad as my wife at.

(The stomach pain tip, for others, is if poking in the bottom right quadrant hurts a lot, and other poking does not, it's appendicitis. Bottom right and to a lesser extent bottom left may also be appendicitis. Poking not making it hurt significantly is gas. I don't remember what the other poke-based outcomes were, but I remember those two.)

ooh I played Life and Death as well! never tried to apply any of its lessons to the real world tho. also, seems like your social circle has a pretty high rate of appendicitis! at least relative to mine, which has featured no cases of it so far.

One of them was outside my social circle, a coworker's wife. He said he was worried about her stomach pain, I told him the poking secret, and he took her to hospital. (Apparently between 1 in 20 and 1 in 10 people get appendicitis, so your social circle is small or lucky!)

or my friends die of other causes before the appendicitis can get them . . .

Ah yes, the statistically true "successful appendectomies increase the rate of car accident deaths" connection. (And decapitations prevent heart disease.)

my cousins father is a surgeon who does appendectomies all the time and my cousin was pretty sure he had appendicitis but his dad was like 'naw you're fine' and then he finally got on webMD and confirmed he actually had appendicitis convinced his dad but it was the weekend in a small town so his dad had to do surgery on him because he was the only surgeon around.

thats my appendicitis story, which is also a story about how surgeons arent always great diagnosticians

The main reason I remember the poking diagnostic technique is because the game had various sound effects of the patient going "argh, eek, ouch, agh" so it obviously encouraged you to keep poking repeatedly, until eventually (without sound effects) they would start saying "nurse, help!" and "stop abusing me!" and such.

Also, weirdly I think the game was probably harder than actual surgery, because it was like "do a purse-string suture" which is a thing I would be able to do in real life but I never figured out how it wanted me to represent stitching 'around' a three dimensional tube from a two-dimensional interface and viewpoint. (Though conversely, the "now pop the organ out and stuff material under it and stop the bleeders" part was almost certainly easier than in real life!)

Doing my own appendectomy on the floor of the TV room while my surgeon-dad watches the football game.

Heather Papps

hello friend

i wonder if it was just dad bias towards downplaying any injury their child has, and not being bad at diagnostics.

my dad used to always say something about "unless it's bleeding, or a bone is sticking out, walk it off" which really made accepting and getting help for mental illness stuff a bit trickier than it should have been.

I feel that hiking is a form of worship tb honest. I go to a liberal quaker service and our worship is being quiet in a room together waiting for god to pipe up so like, i bet god would find it even easier to pipe up in the great outdoors.

its pretty cool that people can kinda just come to an agreement about what their microdenomination does and is, ive never tried it. i kinda like being associated with a denomination, like, its cool that we have historical quaker martyrs etc

*im about to be executed by the puritans for continuing to visit boston while i am a quaker* Nice meltdown
