I have to admit, though, that I never played the Genesis Shadowrun, which apparently is much better gameplay wise.

Infernax At first this seemed like a modern take on Castlevania 2 that was seriously trying to fix the flaws of that very broken game. It was really exciting in the first few hours to dive into that and see how they incorporated bits of modern game design stuff while still fundamentally making a simple retro action adventure RPG... but as it went on it just completely fell apart for me. The combat wasn't bad but there wasn't a single boss fight that stood out to me, you can pretty much just trade blows and heal through anything. For all that it felt like it was bringing a fresh approach to old school game design, the platforming just felt... bad and old. Almost all my game overs were from awkward platforming and obnoxiously placed enemies, it really felt like they just wanted to make sure players died at least a handful of times to be sure the game would feel hardcore or something. Early on there were some fun jumping sequences but as it went on it felt like every platforming area was either a pointless ability check or a "you might die because an enemy bumped you" troll section. Honestly by the end it kind of felt like the whole game was trolling me. The potion and quest system is obviously Dark Souls influenced, but the quests felt more punishing than rewarding. I think a fairly important section of the end game was cut off to me based on choices I made in quests, but they felt pretty arbitrary and I really have no idea what the game wanted me to do differently. Music was awesome to be fair. Great Gamepass game, 'cause really there's a lot of cool pieces here but it just doesn't come together for me.
