Yeah but it's absolutely not. ("Call me Ishmael" is something that often pops up, but only on the Internet. It's the most famous line in Anglo literature for people who think that Bohemian Rhapsody is the most popular Anglo song, because they've never talked to a non-Internet person. The Joyce line isn't even in the top 100.)

What?

It's such a well-known line I've seen it parodied in kids' cartoons. I knew it was from Moby Dick before I was in highschool. And I've never read Moby Dick. It's not some obscure bit of trivia dug up by internet weirdos.

I would think you should quickly google a weird English phrase before making fun of someone for having on it on their shirt or bag and assuming it's a dumb foreigner buying something without understanding it.

Also context of where the person with the bag was is important. Because if that tweet was mostly seen by people in Dublin on Bloomsday most of the responses would be "awesome bag, where did you get it?"

What is the context for the phrase "daughter of the witches they couldn't burn" and why did it become such a red flag. I seem to remember it being a fairly benign phrase up until a couple years ago. Was I just ignorant?

It actually says the witches they forgot to burn. like - oh huh did we catch three witches or four? oh well, let's pack up for the day. And then her ancestor just sorta walked away unburned.

I don’t know if it’s a red flag by itself, but it’s stupid to brag about surviving one witch hunt only to instigate (and then fall victim to) your own witch hunt.

Ignore my posts!
I'm aggressively wrong about everything!
The 'fun' subtle part of the 'witches you didn't burn' bit is that it implicitly claims the witch trials were justified, because apparently witches are real and their problem was that they didn't get all of them.

Either the remaining unburnt witches were so not a threat to existing power structures, that the authorities (who are known for needing very little to no real or imagined reason to consider someone a threat) considered them beneath their notice, or they survived because they ratted the other witches out.

I think the idea is that witches are supposed to be empowered women and the people who burned them did it because they hated that, not because they were actually magical.

Which there is some truth to, witch trials were basically just the old timey way of getting your posting enemies permabanned from life. But it is very annoying when people like that go on about women's empowerment when they spend all their time making GBS threads on women.

I think TinTower once mentioned to me that there is a weird streak of sex/gender essentialism with some of them, bit of an overlap with the weird "I am a woman because I bleed and give birth and if you don't do that all the time and like it then you're not one" types.

No idea how common it is though, but I would imagine that type is probably a little overrepresented because if you're already obsessed with that bit of your life it's probably nice to have some mystical support for it.

Personally it seems unambitious compared to the people who thought it would be cool if we could just eliminate all inconvenience and if you don't want to menstruate you shouldn't have to, but then some other people got weird about that.

absolutely yea, wiccan poo poo is full of ~the divine femininity~ being used as cover to talk about how trans people aren't real and american neo-paganism is riddled with just literal neo-nazis so yea unsurprisingly that poo poo's there too.

My partner and I are both trans, and my sister in law is a pretty dedicated wiccan. She's incredibly wonderful about trans issues despite being cis herself. Obviously she doesn't represent the majority- she herself has said how loving dismal a lot of the community actually is in that regard, but she's at least a great showcase that the religion itself isn't rooted in that horseshit.

I generally assume the religion or philosophy is always the smoke screen for the reaction. The TERF was always there, looking for a justification.
