At first I thought I was imagining this connection, since Deichkind saying "Eins Zwo, Eins Zwo" in their magnificent track "Limit" did not necessarily have anything to do with whatever that poster is, but then I looked into it and saw they are indeed a hip-hop group and Deichkind has collaborated with them, so it is almost certainly an accurate connection on my part. This has been my personal tech relic moment

Would have to listen to Limit again to be sure but it would fit timeline wise. On the other hand saying "Eins, Zwo" equals saying "check, one ,two" so that link may be a bit weak

See that's somebody's personal project and it shows, it's not like any galactic emperor is going to look at that and say "yes put that into mass production bleh im a hosed up space wizard look at my monster face," sometimes it's just fun seeing what you can make with what you have. I bet that R2 unit is just screaming the whole time though

Yes, at every stop they’d shut the whole train down for a few minutes and start it back up before departing.

I was digging through some floppies that someone ditched (as one does), and I came across a floppy for a bbs with a local Milwaukee number on it. So of course I had to fire up the ol Inspiron 8000 to see what was on it Rather expectedly, it was a client for accessing said BBS Then, of course, I called the number, hoping to hear robot screams on the other end. Sadly, it went to a voicemail for a sales guy at some BMW dealership

“Call in an airstrike with this Tandy affordable handheld cellular device!”

That seemed extremely familiar to me and after googling, yeah, it's a licensed Mobira Cityman with a Tandy label, that is to say, an early Nokia NMT phone from 1987! I used to have a toy version as a kid that played random sounds when you pressed the buttons

Hey! That was my first cellphone (well, the original Nokia that was a clone of was my first cellphone). It was great for its time.

Just remembered cityphones. A cellular mobile phone that doesn't work in the countryside or the woods isn't a bad idea. Until you get lost in either of those places.

I swear I read articles about how one would have to leave their office building and go down to the cell to make a call.

I thought from the very start the point is that cell phones would let you cross into different cells and have it seamlessly switch over.

BattleMaster posted:I thought from the very start the point is that cell phones would let you cross into different cells and have it seamlessly switch over. it is, the "cell" is the area served by one tower / base station. but i can believe that, especially early on, coverage was not contiguous. so i could see there being a situation where you have to go walk closer to a tower to start picking up service in a city

Wasn't cell tech developed for the purpose for a moving vehicle to have a continuous connection, though? I know car phones were a thing before those luggable monstrosities

There were a few odd sort-of-mobile networks in the UK like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_(telecommunications), whose rusty metal signs can still be seen in some train stations to this day.
