The way I read it is that it's contrasting the fairly unenthusiastic and by-the-numbers reporting of the media on major issues that affect millions of people on the one hand with the rapid-fire, frothing-at-the-mouth output of transphobic editorials on the other. For example, in the UK media they've currently got like 16 transphobic articles per day across all newspapers, five a day alone from a single publication (Daily Mail).

So the cartoon would have worked better if all the health news was one overworked guy and the transphobe department was taking up a whole floor instead of one transphobe guy typing really hard.

The filibuster literally prevents that second part. The filibuster is just saying "Nope we're not going to allow you to present this bill" so it prevents open discourse and enacting legislation. Without the filibuster senators would have to actually discuss and vote on bills. Even in the imaginary situation where this is what the right wing actually wants the answer is still "end the filibuster."

PELOSI TASTES LIKE VODKA

Nancy Pelosi’s vanity trip to Southeast Asia could trigger a nuclear war. One of her stops is Taiwan, and she might even require US fighter jets as escorts to get her there. The Communist Party in China claims the right to shoot down those US planes to stop Pelosi. Some Democrats such as Congressman Ro Khanna are urging Pelosi to go anyway. He wants her to ‘call their bluff.’ This is madness.

Certainly most of us in the West want Taiwan to keep its independence, but is it really worth it to interfere there to the point of starting another war?

The Chinese Civil War between the capitalist Republic of China was led by Chiang Kai-shek. His forces fought against the Chinese Communist Party, which of course was led by Mao Zedong. Mao won and the war on the mainland ended in 1949. The remnants of Chiang Kai-shek’s forces retreated to the island of Formosa, which is now Taiwan. Regardless, the island is not part of NATO. It remains Chinese. Technically the Chinese Civil War is still ongoing even though both parties now trade heavily with each other.

As much as I detest the CCP tyrants, Pelosi should back off. Who cares about saving face—especially Pelosi’s wrinkled one? How did the Democrats become the party of war?

Oh, I forgot they serve not the American middle class, but rather globalist corporations, big banks, and the Military Industrial Complex. They depend on campaign contributions from such entities. What about the disappearing middle class? Apparently the Democrats want them to shut up, get poorer, and lose their lives in useless wars.

Oh, I think I get it! The inflation reduction act is facilitating the donkey pouring gas on the flaming women because the build back better program won't reach her!

We just need to assume that the donkey, despite being dressed as a fire fighter, has every intention of making any fires around him worse instead of better. Build back better would help him worsen any nearby fires, but it lacks the reach to make things really bad without the help of the inflation reduction act.

In other words build back better was bad and was going to make things worse, but it lacked real punch and reach that's necessary to really hurt people, while the inflation reduction act lets the build back better initiative do its job (which is to hurt people). The democrats are claiming that they're putting out fires, thus the outfit, but they're really playing with gas

It's very dumb.

Episode #59 | July 29, 2022: Ted Calls in from Moscow; Paul Pringle and Other Self-Serving Figures at the LA Times
In this week's DMZ America Podcast, cartoonist Ted Rall calls fellow cartoonist Scott Stantis on a shaky line from Russia. Listen to this first-hand account of how US sanctions are (not) affecting Moscow and how things look and feel in the Russian capital. LA Times investigative reporter Paul Pringle, in the news over his controversial book ("Bad City") calling out corruption at the Times and in LA in general, and attacking his own newspaper over a USC scandal, played a key role—perhaps largely forgotten—in the LA Times' infamous decision to fire and smear Ted as a favor to the LAPD. Scott and Ted remember how things went down in 2015 and analyze how few people at the LA Times have much to be proud of.

Ted Rall posted:

American politicians and television viewers have been deeply moved by images of the suffering people of Ukraine. Unfortunately, the main response has been to impose brutal sanctions on Russia that will destroy the Russian people but not their leaders, who are well insulated from the effect of sanctions. If humanitarianism is the point here, what about the people, the human beings, of Russia?

Can someone explain this one to me? What are the first two panels about and how are they connected to the last two?

Edit - so in the second panel, "you're going to report on Covid", writing the same article over and over as part of our team, while the transphobic op-ed guy (who is still a part of our team, not a different team as implied by we) is going to write transphobic op-eds. Both Covid and the new plague are just red herrings, the point is that the transphobic guy writes the same article over and over again?

Don't know if you've worked at a big company before, but often there's multiple "teams" within "the company." So our protagonist has just joined a media company, he's on the covid article rerun team (which is a boring but understandable job in the eternity that is the pandemic), which is run by the guy with grey hair (see his use of "my" and "we"). Meanwhile the same company, so far portrayed as reasonable but boring and callous, also has that guy whose job is slamming out incredibly transphobic op-eds (see the same character's use of "our").

"That guy" is way, way the gently caress too into his job.

Also, what the gently caress did this guy actually do (yes, he was lured by a sign that the rednecks put up, but that's their sign, seems pretty sus)

Ishida managed to gently caress up the bit where you have to establish that this guy actually has harmful intent; it really seems like one could interpret his actions as quite genuine within the dreamlike general structure of Sinfest

One very easy reading is that he's offering forbidden knowledge, which, y'know, Sinfest probably should be fine with; unless Ishida's about to go on a proper heretical tear about how humanity should never have left Eden
