Does the battery weigh more?

I could be wrong, (turns out I am wrong, should have checked before posting) but I believe that the answer is no. IIRC, the 90 is better tech than the 60. If not, well that's the kind of thing that happens when you buy an old car that was once bleeding edge.

Original owner's 60 KWHr battery craps out. There is no direct replacement part. Tesla installs a 90 KWHr battery and forgets to lock it to 60 KWHr.

Who's the bad guy here?

If there is one, it's the guy who sold it as a 90.

FWIW, the guy who bought it runs a Tesla repair shop and says that he's very knowledgeable about Teslas and has a good relationship with Tesla. He's not a typical buyer. In a court of law, it would be argued that he has expert knowledge, should have realized that there was an issue, and therefore has some of the liability (in addition to the previous owner).

Edit:: According to this site,

https://weightofstuff.com/how-much-does-a-tesla-battery-weigh/

The 90 KWHr pack is 400 lbs heavier than the 60 KWHr pack

Safe to guess that a court would assign partial liability to all three parties. Tesla for not locking it. The previous owner for rebadging and selling as a 90. And the 'expert' buyer for not anticipating the problem.

No, Tesla are the assholes for eventually locking it.

In any other business, "well, your original spare part isn't available anymore, it's been replaced with this higher-spec part, so you're getting that instead. Enjoy the upgrade!" is pretty common.

Tesla want to have their cake and eat it too, by artificially limiting the hardware they sell, even retroactively.

It's also really kinda lovely from an environmental point of view to put in a 90kWh battery (which uses a lot more resources) and then literally wasting 30kWh of its capacity.

I'd like a law that states that any installed battery capacity should be fully usable, except for the part needed for uneven wear leveling of cells and the part often remaining unused to prolong the life span of the battery.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/exclusive-hyundai-subsidiary-has-used-child-labor-alabama-factory-2022-07-22/

quote:

LUVERNE, Alabama, July 22 (Reuters) - A subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co has used child labor at a plant that supplies parts for the Korean carmaker's assembly line in nearby Montgomery, Alabama, according to area police, the family of three underage workers, and eight former and current employees of the factory.

Underage workers, in some cases as young as 12, have recently worked at a metal stamping plant operated by SMART Alabama LLC, these people said. SMART, listed by Hyundai in corporate filings as a majority-owned unit, supplies parts for some of the most popular cars and SUVs built by the automaker in Montgomery, its flagship U.S. assembly plant.

Reuters learned of underage workers at the Hyundai-owned supplier following the brief disappearance in February of a Guatemalan migrant child from her family's home in Alabama.

The girl, who turns 14 this month, and her two brothers, aged 12 and 15, all worked at the plant earlier this year and weren't going to school, according to people familiar with their employment. Their father, Pedro Tzi, confirmed these people's account in an interview with Reuters.

Pedro Tzi's children, who have now enrolled for the upcoming school term, were among a larger cohort of underage workers who found jobs at the Hyundai-owned supplier over the past few years, according to interviews with a dozen former and current plant employees and labor recruiters.

Several of these minors, they said, have foregone schooling in order to work long shifts at the plant, a sprawling facility with a documented history of health and safety violations, including amputation hazards.

I know its not really a thing anymore, (except in third world states like Alabama?) but thats what happened with my grandad. He was 12 and working 60 hours a week slinging slabs of meat at a slaughter house.
Back in Ye olden days, if you were poor, the eldest kids went to work to help support the family. Grandad was the oldest so thats what he did. I should ask my dad if he ever went back to school, but I figure I might already know what the answer is.

Caught up with a buddy the other day who works for an insurance company, some of these cars are getting written off with only a wrecked ignition and front door quarter light because it's so common that we're sucking up the global supply of those parts and they can't be had for months, and customers can't wait. He said his company has a yard full of repairable cars waiting for parts cos it's cheaper to ride it out than send them to damaged auction now for a fraction of the value. Apparently the price for new ignition and window has tripled.

If it's as big a problem as they say, why aren't insurance companies sending their clients $45-$100 club devices, or cable locks that wrap the steering wheel? Cheap insurance against having to pay for a whole car that gets taken. Might not prevent the busted window, and won't prevent someone who really wants your car from taking it, but will definitely defend against a crime of opportunity like a joyride, or at least make sure it isn't your car.

The specific models are used imports from Japan and base models at that, and no, no immobilisers required in their intended market. It's only the base models that use key ignitions, higher trim cars with push start DO have immobilisers.

On top of that, the Aqua is easy to get in to because of the tiny quarter light in the front window that's easily and quietly smashed and doesn't stand out when you're driving it around since it's behind the mirror. In the case of the Demio, I think you can just kick the door in the right place and it pops the lock.

I was too, but seemingly this is the course they've taken to keep people happy. There's plenty of replacement cars available, but telling the customer they have absolutely no idea when the parts can come in isn't going down well, plus for a lot of people they'll be forking out for rental cars for months on end too.

My car goes to the panel beaters tomorrow for a new rear bumper from a minor rear-ending. I took it in for them to assess and quote in February.

February 2021.

The rental one is interesting - some insurance companies cap it at 14 days regardless of how long repairs take, some will pay until the claim is settled (whatever that means).

Someone caved in the side of my car a couple of weeks back and the panel shop says they 'might' be able to fit it in before the end of September (yeah right). Fortunately the doors still open and close okay so at least I can use it in the interim.

I see the point they are trying to make and don't disagree with the fact that most essyoooveeez today are way bigger than they should be, but all those kids were sitting, not standing. I kinda wonder how many of them went away thinking "well, ok thats fine, hopefully I LOLOLO don't have a line up of kids sitting in front of my status symbol". Perhaps they should have also (maybe they did, but didn't show it) had each kid walk directly in front of it, like basically right up against the bumper, while pointing out that the kids would be just about equally obscured standing up. Some of the taller ones maybe just having the tops of their heads/hair showing. Something thats easily missed, if you decide to check your phone at a stop sign or other cross walk for example.
