The "Actually WWE is great" fans now desperately looking for changes in HHH-era WWE that could make it better than before is kinda retroactively admitting that Vince made dogshit all this while. It doesn't help that it's all criticisms of WWE people have had for years now that they actively ignored.

It's backfiring on them because a lot of the talk now is "was that TOO much wrestling?" especially with the dead crowd for the show.

Turns out booking your entire promotion entirely around MOMENTS and not giving a single poo poo about anything that happens in between trains your audience to also not give a poo poo about anything between MOMENTS

Modern wrestling promoters like Triple H simply don't understand fundamental wrestling psychology. You can't just send guys out there for 15+ minutes doing a rest hold-fest and expect the crowd to care; you need real storytelling (e.g. "Which guy can do more cool moves?" or "Which participants in this match are having an affair with one of the people on the outside?") for people to get invested

I've been watching a bunch of old rear end videos of Giant Baba and Inoki in both the US and Japan. Wrestling seemed pretty loving big then too.

WWE loves to rewrite the history of wrestling with Vince being the greatest and only good promoter ever

Wrestling was drawing so many people before Vince jr. In fact he’s the reason wrestling got pushed to small venues like high schools and bars and poo poo.

In the same podcast HHH talks about how wrestling isn’t just about “the moves” it’s about what’s between. You know like that in ring psychology of driving a tractor to the ring to upturn it.

It's extremely funny but also very believable that Hunter 'lying down for 3 minutes between spots is selling' is 'it's all about the notes you don't play'.

wrestling was a genuine mainstream sport before vince jr was an adult and up until a little before he got in the business. not gonna blame that on him but someone else did and i can't stop it. i won't stop anyone

It’s funny because I keep seeing the praise for raw last night and I feel like I’m getting gaslit. Like a couple of the matches were longer than normal which is cool but the first hour was still mostly recap videos and promos and the first match didn’t start until 20 minutes into the show.

And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye

And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Karl Stern does a history of professional wrestling show every so often where he basically just goes over the cards for various shows happening in a given month/year, and it's kinda crazy how he had to set a restriction where he only mentions a show if it had at least 5000 people in attendance or something particularly historic happened on the show, because otherwise there would just be too many shows to ever cover in a lifetime.... and there's STILL too many to cover!

I know obviously the media landscape has changed vastly and audience numbers of the past aren't a 1:1 with the present, but it does show the utter breathtaking lie that is WWE insisting that until they came along all wrestling was in like 50-100 seat bars or bingo halls as opposed to thousands and thousands of people packing arenas, shows ALL over television and plenty of (top) guys making incredibly good money for the time.

And that's not even all the promotions at the time. At Mid-South's heyday they were selling out the Superdome. Other big arenas, I'm sure.
