i'm p curious about ur statement on fanfic mostly being bad, as a whole
is it because a lot of fanfics are written off the cuff or by amateur writers? 👀

personally imo fanfic is p cool mostly (barring the weird porn grody stuff or like, "real person fanfic") just from a creativity aspect, but i also wouldn't necessarily think of it as like fancy and Artistic; tho some of the ye olden generalizations about it kind of suck. like its painting stuff with a broad brush or smth?
oh ive literally written fanfic myself, like within the past few years, i fell off it due to covid depression but dont think im coming at it from an outside view

more just that if you scroll through most ao3 fandom tags and just click stuff at random there's a ton of stuff thats like literally unreadable. its raw id. thats not a criticism at all just the stuff that gets a ton of kudos and/or is passably written makes up like 40% tops.

ah yea i get u 👍, and hoping u get the fanfic spark back!! that makes sense as well, especially if theres no like second eyes on it (i guess the lingo is 'beta readers'?)
oh i forgot to clarify the bit about "ye olden generalizations" wasn't about u or a specific poster or anything just like a trend i noticed in the thread a bit, earlier

dunno if theres a pithier way to word it also, but im kind of wondering if all fiction or stories are initially pure id, before getting refined??

I've seen several Big Youtubers That Care Too Much About Being Big On Youtube say that changing your title and thumbnail for videos is a good idea to increase click-through rate because the people who were not interested in the video first time around will often not realize it's the same video and maybe this time you managed to make a title+thumb combo that's more interesting to them. So they advise literally just having 4+ titles and thumbnails for every video and changing them out like twice a day or whatever for a little while. I'm pretty sure this is one of those 'official content creator strategies' that people learn, like back when everyone learned to make videos over 10 minutes, or when everyone learned to abuse the gently caress out of community posts.

I've started seeing this more and more on news site articles as well and it is one of the most annoying things ever because it occasionally works on me when the changes are brazen enough to materially reframe the content (aka lying about it).

depends on experience. I find that rough drafts get less rough the more you do

fanfic is written mainly as a form of community interaction as opposed to “serious” writing, but ironically it also seems to be one of the only ways you can still reliably write for an audience without having to constantly interact with that audience. I see how much new writers have to constantly hustle these days, it’s exhausting to watch. and that’s not even getting into the ones who get published - as in, not self-published - and still lose money on books because of amazon refunds

For me a fanfic is basically the same as a Star Wars or Star Trek tie-in novel that I would've read the poo poo out when I was a kid, except it's free.

So if I read some reworking of the story of Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect I'm having a good time with the same sort of easy trash writing as that, and there are plenty of forums full of people churning out this kind of thing, but fanfiction 'discourse' is all about the SuperWhoLock Tumblr shipping stuff that I just don't connect with at all.

I mean, I guess it shows my tastes haven't evolved since I was a kid so it's still trashy and worthy of derision, but at the same time a lot of the 'fanfiction bad' takes address stuff that just doesn't correlate to my own experience of the medium.

I guess fanfiction is bad in the same way that anime is bad?

For the bingewatching video it sure worked on me -- I remember the original title was something like "You Don't Actually Like Bingwatching" and I was like gently caress off, you don't get to tell me what I do and don't like, but the second title was a much less accusatory "Bingwatching Is Bad For TV" and that compelled me to actually click on it.

It's me, I'm the slave to the algorithm :(

Speaking of fanfiction, a fan of Game of Thrones/Ice and Fire named Preston Jacobs got blackpilled and is convinced GRRM likely won't finish The Winds of Winter and definitely won't finish A Dream of Spring. So in addition to his usual lore videos and streams, he's decided that he's going to work with his viewers to write TWoW. So far, they have three chapters done.

Prologue, Maester Jon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQcoXQaEXZ4
Areo I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiPRC_8jWUo

I don't do it myself but it all basically comes down to the first 2-3 hours that a video's up been, at least according to the SEO folks and all that, thoroughly crucial to how a video continues to perform in the dreaded algorithm. Up the clicks as much as you possibly can in that time, then change the title to something that's a bit less clickbaity and more descriptive that's probably going to help generate more likes. The thing with a lot of these YouTube things, as silly as they sound, is that they DO work. I don't necessarily like the thought of interrupting the middle of my own video to do a call to action and remind people to like, subscribe and hit the bell and therefore I don't do it, but everyone I've spoken to who does it says that it actually does work, and you can see in the analytics where people clicked on the buttons.

Funny enough, a good example from today: The almighty Nostalgia Nerd has a channel update video out that's mostly talking about cool plans for the future -- a new book, a new recording space and what not -- as well as some frustrations with content creation and the way that YouTube works. Trouble is, it can be a bit trickier to get people to actually click on a channel update vid. So as he explains straight off, you have to title it a certain way that kinda gives the wrong impression, but will actually get people to click on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK2LjQ7voN8

You have to play the game a bit sometimes, alas. There's some channels out there who do this all the freaking time and get quite annoying with it, of course -- there's one particular bass tutorial channel that I sub to that, seemingly every other day, puts a video up called "We're Closing this Down". You instinctively click on it and it's only for some bloody competition or whatever. Must have done this dozens of times. Probably a part of why I don't really watch the channel's videos anymore!

I mean, are we making the distinction between real-person fiction and real-person-shipping? 'Cuz there is a distinction. Like, I'm that creep who's absolutely pro-fanfic, pro-fanart, pro-weird-porn-on-the-internet, pro-writing about anything you want even if it's sick and dark -- sometimes especially if it's sick and dark -- and even I will without reservation say that real-person-shipping is absolutely irredeemable, always without exception causing far more harm than any slight bit of good that could justify it.

Late 80s voice casting was something else. The Shredder was a Japanese man played by a black actor who was written as a predominantly white-coded character. He is thr whole world bound up in one hilariously incompetent rear end in a top hat.
