Back when I worked at an iron ore mine, the Buy American push was more about supporting other union workers, as the auto manufacturers still used USW and UAW staff. Most (all?) Japanese and Korean brands used non-union labor and positioned themselves specifically in areas where they could keep wages low. Now the big three just make all their stuff in Mexico for the same reasons, so who knows? Born to die; World is a gently caress.

I’ll have to look into that ppf package. And yeah, it’s really decent bang for the buck. The only real competition for me are the crosstrek and hr-v and I’d honestly take any of them but I really like the looks and base engine option with the cx-30.

I did see the new trailblazer all over the place on my last drive back to Missouri. Seems like a decent package initially but I don’t trust GM enough to actually buy one.

There have been some strides made this year with new independent unions in GM plants in Silao, for example. I'm not an expert in this so haven't kept up with the latest news but it was good news earlier this year.

The USMCA (replacement of NAFTA), which was mostly the same, did actually have improvements requiring Mexico to allow collective labor movements and (some) fair minimum wages across North America.

USMCA minimum wage for auto workers is $16/hour. Otherwise the companies don’t get the tariff relief.

It looks to be pretty good, the motor is overbuilt for what it is and thats why you can get so much out of it.

A couple of things caught my attention that I can see blowing up motors -

1) Difficulty in tuning the direct injection

2) *really* sensitive to knock events which means 98 RON minimum, any less is a total non starter esp if you think about tuning.

3) A very definite power limit at about 400hp where it lifts the head.

Get ready for Instgram posts crying about weak pistons in the futurewhen it's really due to poor fuel and bad tuning.

Is your HUD that sensitive that you're holding speed but it flicks up and down? Or are you driving by goosing the engine every few seconds so that your speed actually oscillates up and down continuously?

edit: ^^^ I love when they're in the far left lane drift down to 60ish and then you try and pass them and they unconsciously just accelerate up as they see you out of the corner of their eye and then they realize they're going 90 and slow down again. Maybe, just maybe, try the cruise control?

The speedometer is probably the least useful part of the HUD for me. Showing cruise control status, whether the radar sees a car, blind spot monitoring, and directions (on the CX-50 with carplay, bring it to the CX-30, Mazda!) are far more helpful. Also shows the lane departure warning (which I have turned off except when I’m on long road trips) and the smart brake warning.

That said the people I know who don’t like it just set the position adjustment all the way to the lowest setting. With most seating positions it’s not visible at that point.

At least Mazda made a real HUD in the 4th gen MZ3/CX-30/etc instead of that little flip-up plexiglass thing in the prior gens. I can understand people hating that thing.

I’m more annoyed about the fact that the dashboard doesn’t show you the trip odometer and the actual odometer at the same time.

The former. Constant throttle but hills etc cause variations in speed, and it's just annoying. I rarely get the chance to use cruise control where I live and drive, so I don't get the benefit of that info either. Blind spot indicators are on the mirrors, which I should already be checking before I switch lanes. Nav is via Android Auto so no directions on the HUD. The speed limit detection sucks and is sometimes outright wrong. So, I turned all that poo poo off but the current speed is still displayed and even if I turn that off it comes back on next time I start the car.

For my fiancee and I, moving the HUD down to the lowest position is still visible with our respective seat positions.

Like I said, very minor thing and it doesn't bother me on short drives but I just don't use that information at all.

Steeeeriiiiiiiiike twooooooo!

When we test drove the CX-5 my wife has now she had an immediate negative reaction to the HUD, but that was because it was direct center of her vision and super bright. After adjusting it a bit, it's phenomenal.

It was very entertaining (in retrospect) watching her react like the windshield turned opaque when the car started up, but I couldn't see what the hell she was reacting to.

Some of the most aggravating drives I've gone on are Highway 52 between Rochester and the Twin Cities because of this. We spent about 30 miles doing a little ballet rotating which of FOUR cars was in the lead going 70-75 MPH. I got fed up, smashed the gas to put a quarter mile between us, then set my cruise to 75. Ten minutes later the three of them screamed by me going about 85.

Huh weird, I didn't have that issue at all. I'd usually have mine adjusted so it would project directly above the top edge of the hood over the road directly in front of the car, and generally still had adjustment room in either direction if I needed it.
