It's just baffling watching people who apparently just don't understand even the first thing about why they're doing things. Like yes, butter is very good for cooking steak in, but you put the butter in first. And you cook the steak first before you start dumping in liquid or else you're gonna get poached steak. loving cargo cult cookery.

If you put the butter first into a pan hot enough to sear steak, you're going to burn the butter before the steak is done. Start with vegetable oil that's near smoking temperature, drop in the steak for a couple minutes to sear one side, flip it to sear the other side, then add butter (and any herbs/garlic to taste). Use the butter to baste the steak until it's the temperature you want.

I guess yes if your cooker gets hot enough to do that, mine doesn't so it's not really a problem I've always managed to get a nice brown with just butter without burning it.

If possible, and if my steak has a nice strip of fat, I like to place the fat down on the heating pan and let it render out, then use that to sear before dropping butter and herbs into the pan.

for half a moment I assumed the problem was she put the egg in before flipping the steak and it'd overcook the egg, and was ready to go 'oh come on she hosed timing up but that's a probably perfectly fine way to do a steak and eggs meal in a cute way'. Then the mac and cheese came out and I was ready to die.

Hmm actually i think i got it, and your post helped me. Steak, eggs and hashbrowns are a staple of diners. So maybe her idea was to mix up this classic. And so you get the what im sure she thinks is fancy presentation for the steak and eggs. But then potatoes...thats boring. Hashbrowns are usually topped with cheese and a sauce. The sauce could be hot even. And so, she was walking thru the grocery store and saw the flamin hot cheetos and a light went off in her head. Macaroni is starchy and hard just like potatoes!
