Yes, that's why it's bad. The party AI typically stands far enough away from large enemies that you're either close enough to land a hit or close enough to heal them and very rarely both.

It was the one where almost every enemy is rare. I didn't see the last climbing wall the 1st time or I would have ran right for it since it gets rid of aggro.

Holy hell. I just looked and I don't know if I've even explored 10% of the area in Chapter 5.

There’s some stuff that unlocks later but by Chapter 3 is when you unlock most of the features and you can actually explore and go off the beaten path.

There's a few more orouborous related stuff that'll unlock in chapter 3 and 4.

I think the battle system is complete at that point except for one gimmicky class you get in 5.

Ok I take back everything I said about this games simplicity the systems are starting to open up and holy guacamole it’s extremely varied and complex in a good way, thank goodness the game has a great way of introducing you bit by bit to each layer. Great game 10/10

i love how (chapter 3/4) after completely wrecking colony lambda's ferronis, the party just leaves it sitting there upside down totally uselessly like "ah well, nothing more we can do here!" you could at least have the courtesy to flip it back up, it didn't seem that hard the first time!

I can't help but to feel that the entire conversation with (the last hero on the select screen spoiler): No. 7 and how hosed up it is that they refer to her as No. 7 is targeted at us, the fans.

You get the ability to cancel Arts into other Arts directly in chapter 4 (or maybe it's the end of chapter 3?) more or less completely randomly when a hero joins you. No real reason for it to be there, but there it is. Not so much a training wheel as a power option.

I'm "only" 45 hours in (start of chapter 4ish) but I'm a bit confused on what feels like a core plot element - why are characters still talking about their homecomings after their Clocks are gone or they become ouroboros? Do characters in this world simply drop dead on the last day of their 10th term? the framing at the start implied the Queens were killing them (albeit in a respectful ceremonial way), and if that's true idk why anyone would be expecting to have a Homecoming after becoming an enemy of the state. even if the mental framing of dying by homecoming is very deeply engrained I feel like at least one of the protagonists would have brought the question up by now.

Homecoming is really just a less depressing way to talk about how yes, they are going to just drop dead at the end of their tenth term is how I read it. As far as the framing at the start, I had a vastly different read, that it was more the queen is showing up as a way to honor their service, skill, and merit to actually survive the full ten years

they have two life limits, the flame clocks are a resource that lets them live, but getting rid of it won't remove their 10 year lifespan, and they'll die when their time is up even if they don't do an official homecoming.

I see, I guess I just misinterpreted the opening. It'd have been nice to have gotten a quest where someone dies "naturally" without a ceremony but it sounds like my interpretation may have just not been something they considered.

I mean, you're not halfway through the game yet

Also this might have been discussed before but anyone else thinks the XP gain was slightly overtuned in this game? Once you master chains you can pretty much kill everything with 500% xp bonus and that kept me consistently 10 levels above the main story without even going for 100%, just taking on unique enemies along the way. Then I figured out if my party survived long enough to charge my chain I could take on blue enemies 20 levels above me for easy 1-2 levels a pop.

I just turned off overkill in the settings and only use bonus xp when I'm falling behind.

As a bonus I'm actually gathering items I need to upgrade my gems now so they're starting to get closer to parity with my level. I missed multiple "tiers" because I wasn't fighting anything from being too overleveled so I didn't have the monster drops needed.

yeah honestly I'm fine with it. It lets you enjoy the story and avoid the most bullshit mechanics they throw at you. And if you really care about mastering the mechanics it'll stop mattering when you're in the endgame anyway.

Turning overkill off sucks for encounters with multiple enemies in combat, though. There was at least one really difficult fight that would have been made much easier if I could have continued piling in AoEs after defeating the enemy I had targeted.

Putting the “Talent Art pre-charged to 100%” Master Art (from Flash Fencer lvl 20) on Noah completely breaks the game to the point where I ended up removing it because it made combat unfun.

You can (and should) turn off Overkill in the options menu. Turn it back on later when grinding CP or in the post-game.

Still mystified why they added an Overkill toggle but left downleveling for the post-game. Literally the only reason to turn off Overkill is so you don’t get overleveled.

I guess it's a xenoblade tradition that you can completely break the game, but you sure get a lot of options here. Looks like overkill is the actual difficulty setting in the game. But I guess you'll need all that to tackle the hardest stuff in the game.

They did, you just can't use it until you beat the game for reasons. Or if you have a modded switch or are emulating it you can enable it via cheats.

Cheating to enable expert mode was a great decision because I get all the casino flashing lights lizard brain fun of big exp overkills while still being able to keep the game sane

I started out chapter 5 slightly below par level wise, and in the process of doing all the hero quests available soon after the start of the chapter, finally ended up five levels over the last one on my list. Which was actually nice because there's was an escort component rendered moot because none of the spawns would aggro me. But generally, I've managed to stay at par with leveling through the entire game, and haven't had too many times I felt blocked progression-wise on classes.

I find the combat system in xenoblade games to be tedious for trash mobs, since damage is very momentum based and regular fights end before things ever get interesting. Running away from all non-essential fights and going ham on overkills seems to have worked for me, and I have to wonder if that's what the developers expected people to do when they were working out the leveling curve
