I kind of resent the weird theorycrafting here that has made it necessary for mods to defend decisions in public that were made in private for good reason.

It's a direct result of the collective failure to communicate (something you admitted was a problem) combined with the moderation issues that made an IK desirable in the first place.

I mostly was just curious since antivehicular said that the stuff she was saying over PM was a deciding factor. Without knowing what was said it becomes your word vs their word and unfortunately you've had a few modding gaffes in the past and mods/admins in general right now have come under scrutiny recently over a variety of things mostly related to poor communication and inaction. I admit I'm also being nosy because I just like knowing what's going on in a situation that's so reliant on he said/she said.

Hello thread.

I just recently became the the Games Admin for the site (Games + Trad Games) and am sort of the point of call between users + mods before Jeff. This is a sort of new thing we are trying and as such any issue in these sub we wanted there to be a face who you could turn to and get assistance with who has virtually the same kinds of powers as Jeff.

I am aware of some of what is happening here, but I want to be as neutral as possible and I want all of the regulars of this thread to voice their concerns to me. This is obviously a popular thread and, as with all threads requiring IK help, it means it has specialised knowledge and someone who knows the topic well is needed to navigate any moderating issues. From the last few pages and from the mod forum I can see that Mayveena was highly regarded for this choice due to her background and knowledgebase - they had everything you would want for such a position.

I am still reading the reports sent and processed during the time of her IKing as well as notes made in the respective forum thread from the mod forum (each forum has a notes thread where there is a record of a lot of actions taken place and Trad Games has a fairly extensive one.)

IKing should be a pretty low stakes form of moderating on this site - mostly only sixers but the ability to request higher probes when talking to mods and admins to get it approval. IKs do talk with the mods and admins and I have seen many examples of it, so it is also not as much of an island as you might think. IKs are valuable and for certain threads they can be wonderful.

I want to help out here with both you and your mods. I want you all to continue to enjoy this thread and I want to help you all reach that - especially if right now you feel it is not. So please bring to me your issues and thoughts on how we can all move forward with this thread - board games is a big topic after all!

One addendum, I am in the UK, so my timezone might not overlap tremendously with everyone else but if I say I will do something I will always give a time frame for responses and actions.

Ok I can see that phrase is problematic, and while I know women can be sexist too, I think it does matter that the mod using those words is also a woman, im not sure if people noticed on her profile. It seems unlikely that the best explanation for antivehicular finding someone difficult to work with is that she's just sexist.

Magnetic north and bottom liner seem to be talking about how, since we failed to threadban posters who are ok with the content of games like kingdom death, we're sexist. That's bullshit. If they meant the thread itself is sexist because its tainted by those posters, i disagree with that too, but at least thats a disagreement on mod policy and not necessarily an accusation that I or Anti or former tg mod potatocubed etc must be sexist. Just, you know, sexist enablers.

That is maybe the root thing. Bottom liner and magnetic north maybe thought mayveena was supposed to rescue the thread from the mere presence of the gross game-likers but she never had that power and was not actually responsible for that. I hope people weren't demanding that of her on discord or wherever.

Regardless, since my moderation decisions from months ago are under attack again, and im being accused of driving mayveena away, and im posting from a kindle till friday, im asking admins to step in and field qs, review my decisions if they see fit, etc. Thanks to videogames for jumping in. I will of course defer to admin direction, as i have throughout.

It really doesn't.
Two specific posters were coming in and continually trolling/threadshitting multiple times. The posts were disruptive and several people asked for those posters to be threadbanned to prevent further drama. It was not done.
That's really it. There was a lot of handwringing and navel gazing around what the threadshitting was about, but it's immaterial to the root issue.
Mayveena being made IK was a response to the perceived lack of moderation, which wouldn't have been needed had more aggressive modding been done.

She's welcome back any time she wants to come back though. Like even if you think the situation was handled poorly, the stakes of being IK or not really should be very minimal, and the number of regular posters in this thread who clearly value her input here suggests it's not an unfriendly environment. I'm not trying to pick a fight with people who want her to post here--I hope she comes back too. I'm just saying the only one preventing that at this point is her.

I've been continuing my run of the EXIT games with my wife, we did the western kidnapping one over the weekend on a rainy day (something something Fortune City). Overall, it had some really cool ideas - there's a list of suspects and locations and you have to cross reference a map and a bunch of information to find the culprit - but the puzzles themselves were pretty weak, and I really disliked the canyon bridge puzzle. Also, when we got to the end we couldn't figure out how to rule out one of our two remaining suspects (Billy, the post office guy) and basically guessed, because we knew for a fact that the other suspect hadn't been ruled out. Probably on the lower end of the memorable/good ones we've done so far, but the mystery aspect was neat and I hope it's explored more in other scenarios.

I also grabbed one of the Adventure Game boxes that I heard were more like story-based, reusable EXIT games, but haven't even cracked it yet.

I bought Journeys in Middle Earth and all the expansions for my birthday and loved the first two missions we played. The deck system for skill checks is very cool and is a significant enough change to make the game feel not like a reskinned Mansions of Madness. The first mission we had a little time to spare but we were hounded by enemies, so we missed a side quest. The second I survived two last stand tests while fighting the boss and failed the third, so I was out; the game came down to a single skill test that we thankfully passed. Absolutely stunning minis and the app is very good.

Also invited the neighbours (non gamers) round for birthday drinks and we ended up playing MicroMacro Crime City, which was a huge hit. We did the tutorial and three missions of different difficulty levels. Room full of inebriated adults hunched over a table, carefully placing various coloured tokens to track different leads.

Regular group still working our way through Arkham Horror card game, playing Edge of the Earth on hard difficulty and somehow doing incredibly well. No trauma for either of us and everyone is alive apart from people the story forced us to kill. Lily Chen was my favourite in Mansions of Madness and she doesn't disappoint here!

Edge of the Earth is seriously such an amazing campaign, it's really rekindled my excitement over the LCG entirely. MJ is a genius for the stuff she's doing with the existing game's framework.

I've been out of the Arkham LCG loop for a bit. I know they reprinted the core sets in a more buyer friendly way. If I had everything up through the end of Innsmouth Conspiracy, what's the new content? Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
I’m mostly just a lurker, but it did seem like Mayveena was really stressed about being IK and the self-probe seemed like a big sign of that. Mayveena is an amazing public figure in board games who takes both game design and inclusivity in games very seriously. I don’t know that her level of passion for the hobby at large matches the mindset for being an IK, something meant to be much more laid back. That’s just my take as someone who’s read the board game threads on here for well over a decade.

Also, I know the rules on cross forum drama, but it seems like an important piece of context about whatever happened on the discord is missing. Also missing are of course Mayveena’s own opinions on the matter, which are possibly being filtered instead through her friends on her.

So in my opinion, Mayveena is an icon of the community, seemed stressed by being IK, and seemed to take it very seriously. It’s
unknown whether she was being bullied on discord or whether the mods on here were unsupportive of her or whether or whether she was not working well with the mods or whether there was poor communication by both sides. So it seems useless to speculate about that without information or to allude this information without just saying it.

Also anyone know anything about the War of the Ring card game? I know WotR is one of THE 2 player war games so it would be nice if there was a more digestible version.

It's fantastic. There are so many decisions to make that feel important or might give us bonuses later - this was also why it was kind of gutting to miss out on a sidequest in Journeys in Middle Earth: you get good rewards for achieving things other than the main objective.

My only complaint is that, well, it's in Antarctica. So we can't do any separate missions without destroying the narrative. I've played Night of the Zealot, The Circle Undone and Dunwich Legacy so far and all of those felt like it was fine to insert other missions in at various points. But this is a very, very minor criticism of an amazing campaign.

That's why I was an IK of the Magic thread for like three minutes until I talked myself out of it.

When you see it, you'll shit yourself.

Mayveena left, as far as I know, because there were some boardgaming-related disagreements regading Euros, and she told people that she didn't feel like she fit within the culture of the discord, which is different from the culture of the thread. We discussed her leaving within the admin channels when she left, she reached out to one of the admins explaining why she left, and we reviewed communications to see if there had been anything that was actionable when she left. She didn't leave because of thread drama, she wasn't hounded by anyone in the discord because of thread drama, and she wasn't pressured to act in any way within the Discord.

The entire thing has become a game of chinese whispers where people heard that she had left and then immediately assumed that there had been huge drama where there hadn't actually been any. It's really irritating especially that Leper would spend an entire paragraph trying to cast allusions to the discord while simultaneously saying that he doesn't want to know anything about it, and especially when trying to create doubt and inter-community drama by saying poo poo like "if so I cant imagine why, shes hardly a problematic poster or anything?", which is an incredibly lovely thing to say when you actually don't have any knowledge of what may or may not have happened.

I barely post in this thread anymore and that's been partially due to my waning interest in board games, and partially because moderation of known bad-faith posters and concern-troll has been minimal and innefective. Thanks for making me have to write this.

The Dune game is being designed by the War of the Ring designers so there is some precedent there. I have high hopes even though I'm not a fan of CMON. We'll see.

If you check BGG there was a designer posting in a thread about the WotR card game and answering questions. It has also been demo'd a few times recently so there are some impressions around. It does look like a more digestible version of WotR that hits a lot of the same feel, but keep in mind it's being designed primarily as a 2v2 game and they said there will be a 1v1 variant but it's still being tweaked.

Tried some of the travel game suggestions on my gen con trip, so just quick opinions to close the loop:

Sushi Go! was good fun.

Regicide was great.

Mentions I'd previously played:

Fox in the Forest, still good.

Didn't bring Codenames Duet with me, it was a bit too bulky, but it is a good game.

Didn't bring Tak since I didn't have a cloth board, but good game and cloth board on the way for next time.

Unrelated to travel, tried Elizabeth Hargrave's new incoming game, The Fox Experiment. https://www.elizhargrave.com/games/the-fox-experiment

I'm not entirely sure we were playing this with the correct rules, because our teacher didn't really know the rules like they should have. But it was really fun and I'll be keeping my eye on it when it comes to crowdfunding.

Also finally tried Captain Sonar, what a great game.
