I’m struggling to name any UHDs I own that I’ve watched more than once :(. Alien & BR2049 but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. There’s so much drat streaming content out there…

Some of the BRs I own I’m just not going to bother upgrading for this reason. I bought the Apocalypse Now BR and watched it once, so it’s hard to justify upgrading when the BR looks great.

Depends.

Growing up my dad refused to rewatch movies without a buffer of a couple of years, and that's where I'm at. There's been some exceptions like Mandy, or Psycho Goreman, but for the most part it holds.

I'm usually working with a 6-12 month rewatch buffer.

I have the opposite issue. The UHD thing hooked me so much that I tend to just endlessly rewatch stuff and I've actually been feeling like some of my streaming subs have gone a bit to waste in the last few years as a result. It's kinda what Fran mentioned, some of the older movies on UHD were so good looking that I'm just mesmerized by them and it's a bit addictive. But even before UHD I had a decent sized blu ray collection and my tendency on a lazy Sunday or whatever was to throw on a David Lean or Ridley Scott or PTA or Altman film rather than seek out something new. With UHD probably the biggest shift has been to rewatching action/blockbuster movies because the stuff I grew up with in the late 80s and into the 90s looks fantastic on UHD.

Not to mention I rewatch at least 20ish movies every single October.

I usually try to rewatch a few favs every October during the horror challenge, and if something comes up in the horror bracketology that I've already seen but really want rewatch I will then. Other than that it's mostly when something I've seen gets a new transfer and I pick it up.

The Indiana Jones movies are a good example of what UHD has done to my rewatch habits. I've seen those movies a hundred times over the years, but I'd settled into a routine of maybe watching them once every few years, or maybe once a year at most.

Then last year the UHDs came out, and it's like my desire to watch Indiana Jones is totally revitalized. I watched Temple of Doom last night and I think that's the third time I've watched it in only like 14 months since the UHDs release.

I typically don’t watch something more than once a year. I don’t want to ruin things I like by overexposing myself to them. I need time to breathe. People who have watched The Office like 7 times through and immediately start back up once they’ve finished baffle me.

I also have to be in the right mood to watch something. Doesn’t even have to be something with heavy subject matter. I’ll sort of want to watch something but something tells me that it’s not the right time for that particular movie.

Meh, depends I guess. Back in the 00's when I was younger, more poor, and collecting DVDs, I would watch my tv shows on DVD, maybe not back to back, but usually a couple times in a year. OTOH, I was usually watching it with the audio commentary on the second run.

I'm thinking about replacing the drive I have now with a bdxl makemkv friendly one so I can run a rip as soon as I get the disc to check for errors without having to play an entire movie. I'm with you, the QA has vanished

Brief test of a few scenes in heat and it looks fine. In a basement with no windows but the lights on, I ran through the armored truck scene and a couple night time scenes and some parts are a little too dark but I think that's by design so you aren't missing much. So glad to have this finally.

Heat image is dark as hell. If the TV advance settings are all off its super dark like they just dropped a ND filter on everything. Luminescence adjustment needs to be high/med, contrast/brightness set to 100 on my Sony OLED. Really strange they made it like this. I'll need to watch through it since I only watched the first few minutes but that is with him outside and then also in the Hospital where it isn't supposed to be a dark lit scene I guess.

e: Looks good now that I watched parts of it for 30 minutes in an actual dark room but it definitely something thats not popping with colors.

I loved this rewatching it on 4k UHD. The mall chase scene is amazing with that amount of clarity. It's a really awesome 4k, and the movie is basically a mix-tape of stunts and music.

I'd like this, partially because it'd also provide a place for spare film codes, which I never know where to share and always default to genchat

The last few years I've gotten in the habit of trying to focus on new-to-me stuff. My backlog was getting out of control enough (and recent sales have only made that worse :negative:) I thought narrowing that down would be best. I still try that but I'll still make time for rewatching either all-time favs (Midsommar, Little Women 2019, Fury Road) once a year, or new stuff I already saw solo with friends this time (Nope, Prey)

Rewatch movie chat.

My rewatches tend to happen for several reasons. The most rare is I'm watching cable tv at my house or a friend's house and a movie I love is on or follows something I was watching. The most common is when I find an older movie I love at a good price. I try to watch anything I buy within a few days and don't buy something to let it sit for a few months. The second most common reason is I find out a friend has not seen a movie I love. The other reason I may fall into rewatches is when I get into franchise marathons. The last common reason is a movie has received a 4k remaster that I want to check out.

A buddy and I watched Prey on Friday. He had never seen a Predator movie before. We then watched the rest of the franchise over the weekend.

I try not to rewatch too much for reasons Casimir Radon discussed. Since the pandemic started, I find myself seeking out classic/interesting movies I haven't seen before more than rewatching. An example movie of an awesome old movie I've watched for the first time this year is the Long Kiss Goodnight.

edit:
I'll also rewatch movies with commentaries on occasion but I feel like that shouldn't count.

Yeah for me, I try to leave a bit of a buffer between watches generally, so that I don’t get sick of whatever movie I’m watching. I agree that a movie like (for instance) Robocop is evergreen, but I also don’t want to watch it four times a year if that makes sense? I’d rather be blown away by it once every 5.

When I was younger I would watch everything to death and it kinda killed a lot of stuff for me (I probably haven’t seen Army of Darkness for about a decade, Bad Taste has been about 15 years, even though I still think they’re great) so at this point I’m mostly trying to watch new-to-me stuff and pepper in re-watches here and there, when I feel like it.

The option to snag a pickup copy of the Heat steelbook from Best Buy became available around midnight so I snagged myself a copy. Going to pick it up sometime after the store opens.

I was Best Buy the other day dropping off some electronics for recycling and yeah, the physical media section is really small now. I’m still mourning the days when there was a huge section in the middle of the store for big box PC games.

I think I might know why there's some variation in opinions on the Heat UHD. I've been reading some reviews and apparently the first Heat blu ray came out in 2009, and if that's the one you've been watching for years then you'd be used to a brighter film. Mann then did the "Definitive Edition" in 2017 where he must've tweaked the color grade and given it a much cooler, almost grayish tone overall.

The UHD looks good to me and I'm guessing it's because the only times I've seen the movie in the last ten years or so is that 2017 blu ray. So I don't know any different, I was already used to this just being the intended look of the movie.

Heat is dark, but also its less blue than the blu-ray was. the blu-ray.com review mentioned something more slate grey in appearance and I definitely agree with that assessment. instead of it going more in the blue direction in the day time scenes that the blu-ray did its not de-saturated, but feels more natural in comparison. It's dark in the night scenes (which are abundant), but its feels naturally dark rather than someone forgetting to flip on the switch. like the lights play a much more significant role in the movie than previously where there was a sheen of blue and brightness over the night scenes. I never felt like I was missing anything, I do think the criticisms out there are a bit overblown, but I am also on team "HDR/Dolby Vision makes everything kinda darker" so I'm always futzing with my brightness levels. Baseline is usually 55-60 on my LG C9 Brightness.

It basically feels like a ND filter is on all the time. No detail is lost and its not like its anything else is wrong with the picture its just every thing is a bit darker than you think it should be. You get used to it but watching it in the dark was a must for me. With the generally darker OLED and not having a goon basement theater set up for 24/7 viewings anything but in that environment made some parts hard to see.

Ah, yeah, the Blu-Ray of it that I bought and watched recently (right before hearing that the UHD was announced) was also the Director's Definitive Edition, so I guess this is just a 4K upgrade of the cut I already had.

I'm watching it now and it does look kinda dark, but I probably just need to play around with my TV's brightness. The audio sounds incredible.
