in terms of vibe (kinda wistful and sad) and melody (long and motivic), please let me know, cause it's my favorite stuff

I don't dip into that pool often, but if I want under-produced wistful melancholy my go-to is David Bazan/Pedro the Lion. Achilles Heel is a wonderful album, but Arizona is the stand out song to me:

I hate when I put off practicing and when I finally do practice I can't believe that I am not doing it 12 hours a day because it's one of the only things in life that brings me happiness. Like, I'll literally get all worked up and stressed out talking myself out of it and then I go do it and it feels like I was a whole-rear end different person before I picked up the instrument. Emotional vs intellectual is a rough battle. I know that playing makes me happy but then emotions get in the way and stop me.

Get up early and practice 20-60 minutes in the morning before you do anything else.

Barring that, carve out a chunk of time to make it the first thing you do when you get home from whatever it is you spend your day doing in our capitalist hellworld

Prior to my third covid diagnosis, this was what I used to do- I go to work super early so when I get home at 3 pm, I made 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM my practice time and after dinner was when I composed. Being on rails really really helps with anxiety but it's how you handle it when you get knocked off your schedule that matters.

This is how I started going to the gym regularly. Go as soon as it opens in the morning because who knows what will happen at work over the course of the day I would dig up as an excuse to not exercise that evening.

Now it's just a thing I do in the morning instead of some chore I dread every day. No less innocuous than other morning routines such as eating breakfast or getting dressed.

Can't do that with guitar though. Too busy working out :v:

So I have a guitar with SD Livewire pickups. Has this base level hum that I don't think humbuckers--especially actives--should have. Is not affected by touching various parts of the guitar.

Have checked continuity between the pots, switches, output jack and bridge and everything seems fine.

Both pickups make the same noise.

What the heck can I do to further troubleshoot? As far as I can tell the wiring's 100% factory and everything looks fine.

It does seem to vary slightly depending on position in the room so it feels like it's picking up something.

Shield every cavity?

None of my other guitars are making noise with the same amp, cable and sitting in the same place playing.

Usually active pickups are really low noise, and aren't even grounded the same way to the guitar's hardware as passives. However I only have experience with Jackson actives and EMGs, maybe those are weird? ... I really don't know, if my poo poo were acting up like that I'd take it to my tech after I figured out what I could. Seems unlikely it'd be innate to the pickups themselves because that'd mean you managed to get two bum actives at once, which though possible seems unlikely, so I'd suspect something downstream or how they're wired in is problematic. I've had cables become radio receivers in cases where a pedal's electronics or an instrument jack wasn't grounded properly, maybe something like that?

If you have a battery powered amp, try it through that (on battery mode, so no wall electricity) and then if there's still noise take it to different rooms/outside with the portable amp and see if you still get it.

I have a THR10X so can definitely try that on batteries. Will do a bit later.

EDIT:
Stuffed some batteries in the amp and did some testing. Noise is everywhere in the house BUT the guitar is dead quiet in very specific orientations. I can move it just 10-15 degrees and it starts up again, but at a particular angle it is quiet as can be.
So I guess there's some sort of interference at play here. The wiring is fairly "generous" from the factory so they folded it over a few times; could this be acting as an antenna of sorts? Wondering if I should get some copper tape and just shield the control cavity for starters.

This seems more likely than the pickups to me. I’d recommend looking into copper foil; I haven’t used it personally but I’ve heard it’s easier than copper tape which I can confirm is a pain in the rear end.

Take it outside, walk around a little. Some guitar youtuber was having noise issues (his was like a ticking) and didn't try batteries/portable amp until after he unplugged every appliance in his house and heavily rearranged things, then it turned out it was a transformer across the street and, after he called to complain, eventually the local electricity concern came by and fixed it.

Samurai Guitarist aka Sammy G I think. Good idea, I will go out and play some Megadeth riffs around the yard.

I do have a couple dimmed LED lights acting wonky as well so perhaps there's something troubling going on...

Siivola

Yeah dimmed LEDs might do it. You basically "dim" an LED by turning it on and off real fast, which means those run on literal electrical noise.

Clayton Bigsby
Apr 17, 2005

OK, it's not the guitar. It's the orientation.

When I play my other guitars I sit with them so the neck's basically horizontal. But when playing the V I use classical position.

If I angle my PRS up 45 degrees I get a similar noise.

If I make the Dean neck horizontal it goes quiet.

Can't believe I didn't think about this before.

Not sure what the gently caress I can do about it though.

lg, drat. That sucks.

I actually installed copper tape in three guitars after moving into this apartment. I have the same issue. Noise that I can make almost disappear by rotating my guitars. The shielding did nothing because it must be coming in through my passive pickups. I have a set of V4 noiseless pickups in a Strat and it handles the noise far better. It's so bad I have to really crank a noise gate to record anything with high gain. It really bums me out because my old apartment didn't have this issue and I am locked into this lease for a looong time. I need to build some kind of Faraday cage.

there are a few good books on the topic... initially i got started on this stuff from Jamie Andreas's "The Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar". book and video course: https://www.guitarprinciples.com/shop/the-principles-ebook-video-instruction-p-96.html warning, she sounds like a total crank, but the info is good for the most part. i actually did a couple video lessons with her years ago that were helpful.

other than that, david leisner's book "Playing With Ease" is okay (aimed at classical players), but he mainly cribs stuff from Alexander Technique and you'd probably be better off just doing that instead

Physical training, especially around your core. You don't have to be buff to sit upright but it sure helps. Consult your doctor of course, but I bet they wouldn't mind some yoga or whatever.

i also have scoliosis, and being strict about classical technique helped out a ton. playing live/with a strap still kinda stinks and hurts the next day, but being actively conscious of your back's alignment helps a ton. invest in a really nice padded strap that spreads the weight out more; it's easier to find a spot that distributes the weight correctly when it's not a tiny $2 GC strap putting 12 lbs of LP on a very narrow band of your shoulder.

fixing bad computer chair posture, while not directly connected to what you do on the instrument, helps a ton. you're going to have times you put strain you cannot avoid on your back (having to stand), so combat it when you're not playing by fixing your posture in other areas. foam rollers are also a godsend.

i used to get home from work where i stood for six hours, and i wouldn't be able to play music at all, and i kind of wondered why. like, why is it that after months of standing up for shifts, i never got used to it, and even my computer chair or piano stool were uncomfortable? and i guess now i know. it's frustrating.

my computer chair posture is awful, because my chair is also awful, and i don't have any money.

all frustrating.

i tend to kind of take a step back and forth while playing guitar, and for a while i thought it was a stimming tick, but i actually realized it just kind of helps either leg from getting too tired.

How do folks feel about doubling up on guitar finishes in their collection? I'm really happy with my metallic purple Jaguar, and now I've seen I can get a Bass VI in the same color, except the headstock is also painted. I was originally looking at a black one which seems to be much less prevalent on the second hand market.

Might be more for the bass thread but I'm thinking of trying to get a body cheap and do some mods, like filtertrons again. If I'm feeling ambitious I considered getting a cheap Harley Benton VS and doing major work to it, ideally including adding the Jaguar/Bass VI style switches including a strangle on the low end. But I do really like the Jaguar tremulo and would really like that on this if I pull the trigger.
