EASY. Where I work you have to pay outrageous fees to park that go straight into improving the grounds. People complain about it to me and I just tell them I have no idea what they are talking about I bike/walk.

So Brisbane is hosting the Olympic games in 2032 and the city is building out a bunch of infrastructure. One of the new additions are these weird electric bus-trams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_VxeKljxEU Plus a(nother) big tunnel under the river https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWUhQtoQvwI e. the confusing part is that the bus-tram is called a metro but the underground train isn't called a metro NoNotTheMindProbe has issued a correction as of 03:22 on Aug 11, 2022 |

Brisbane also used to have a tram network that was ripped up because cars were the future. The city has spent the last 30 years trying to build it back with busways and train lines:

A study led by environmental health scientists at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health examined the release of vapors from gas station vent pipes, finding emissions were 10 times higher than estimates used in setback regulations used to determine how close schools, playgrounds, and parks can be situated to the facilities. Findings appear in the journal Science of the Total Environment.

there is a thread on /r/fuckcars today where people are defending drive thus turns out a line of idling vehicles circling a restaurant is actually good because - the disabled - effort to remove children from car - not getting raped or robbed (really) - the pandemic - can listen to music - "No needless interactions. Very well-suited for introverts." (there are several people with such crippling social anxiety they need to talk to a human over an intercom, then talk to a second human to pay, then a third to collect their food, instead of ordering through the kiosk and wordlessly picking their order up at the counter)

What I mean is that while fast food can be a nice snack, it's basically a drug that's harming lots of Americans, and any arguments about equitable access to fast food are doubly absurd. Like saying it's ableist to not have drive-throughs at a liquor store.

Fitzy Fitz posted:What I mean is that while fast food can be a nice snack, it's basically a drug that's harming lots of Americans, Fast food, like any other food, is just a combination of fats, proteins, and carbs. There is nothing inherently special about fast food that makes it bad other than what capitalism does to it (more food sold and eaten = more profits). There are an insane number of people in this country who think a ~560 calorie Big Mac from McDonald's is some kind of unhealthy fatso meal but they're completely fine with a 1500 calorie cheese-and-meat monstrosity from a local brewpub. It's all marketing.

The capitalism part is the important bit though. Fast food doesn't exist without it. It's inherently exploitative.
