I know, right? "Hey university freshman, try to place yourself in the head of this clinically depressed tortured genius and picture what life is like for him", says the cartoonist who has no idea what university is like.

As an aside, I loved the Doctor Who episode "Vincent and the Doctor", where Doctor Who and his assistant go back in time to help Van Gogh deal with some stuff and think they've given him hope by showing that he will be loved and appreciated by later generations, only to discover that nothing really changed and he died just like he originally had, because you can't cure clinical depression by snapping your fingers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubTJI_UphPk

It's a beautiful and touching episode.

Kevin McCormick became a gag-writer for Garfield after his strip ended.

I said elsewhere that I suspect he was the guy who wrote the "litter of puppies" strip.

It's painfully obvious that they picked a recognizable name and have about as much of a grip on him as the dumb jock character is supposed to.

He picked the artist. I want to see the rubric though. What's he actually being marked on?

I think he's a highschool student? I don't know if American highschools offer "art history" (but I don't think the Evanses do either) and Luann called it a "school project", which sounds more like highschool.

I will legitimately think it's the funniest thing if the end of this whole interminable Phantom arc is that it took so long in comic time that Savarna was executed and it can't come true
