🇨🇳 🚆 #China #Trains #ChooChoo #AllAboard

China on Wednesday unveiled the first of its kind PML (Permanent Magnetic Levitation) train in Xiong’an New Area, Hebei Province.

This mode of transport - similar to what Elon Musk has proposed (but not built) for the USA; is one of the most energy efficient methods of transportation in the world. The train carriage is “attached” to the track via extremely high powered magnets, and travels across the track without making direct contact with said track, removing friction from the equation.

The track is suspended above ground to prevent disruption to existing infrastructure/the environment, and is extremely safe; even if the track loses power, the magnets will keep the train suspended until repairs can be conducted.

The presentation of "satellite imagery" and "leaked papers" as a major source of discovery in Xinjiang makes it seem like North Korea - a place where we can't get eyes on the ground (actually this is kinda a false framing of North Korea as well). Too foreign - inhuman.

The implication is its a very closed off, remote, foreign place. It's a psychological tool, to frame it as if the entire province is an open air prison, a closely guarded warzone. A big Gaza Strip (except we like Israel).

it's actually a huge tourist destination and you can just go there and drive around, like say, Oklahoma (OK is not a tourist destination but you know what I mean). It's remote, sure, but not isolated.

huge tourist destination and oklahoma don't belong in the same sentence.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The fake fun at the water park reminds me of the big effortpost in the libertarian thread about how a libertarian or even liberal mindset can't get their head around the government building an airport or a dam and it becoming a part of the economy, like it's a fake potemkin airport that thousands of people are pretending to use daily because it isn't a pure free market creation

imo the best communist video games story is the post about how there was a Cuban Brood War scene largely isolated from the world because their internet was so bad that only LAN play was feasible so they also had their own meta that was out of sync with everyone else though occasionally someone who traveled abroad would bring replays of Korean pros they would share for people to study the latest strategy. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=3953960&pagenumber=2490&perpage=40#post519186807

also this guy has a million videos about xinjiang

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wcc9dVA66sU

debunking xinjiang stuff is hard because there are so many stories out there that most people just have a general vibe.

you have to first show that media have a long history of being wrong about this kind of poo poo (articles from 5+ years ago have a completely opposite viewpoint) and show them basically every story comes from 1) zenz (that grayzone report is good) 2) RFA/NED/CIA/etc or 3) ETIM affiliated groups (designated as terrorist groups by UN/US/EU since 9/11).

then you gotta lay out an alternative explanation for what happened. i usually lay out these points:
  1. uyghur islam is not the same as salafism or wahhabism
  2. uyghurs were getting radicalised by imans and soldiers returning from fighting for isis
  3. terrorist attacks, riots, etc happened
  4. china's analysis was that radicalisation happened because of a lack of prosperity due to language barriers
  5. reeducation camps to teach language and skills that seems to have worked to deradicalize people

only then does debunking specific stories seem to stick.

here's a big impressive pdf from an international research group if they're an article head: https://pdfhost.io/edit?doc=c73e53d6-26a7-4157-ab98-5cb4432f1ef0
