On the other hand, maybe someone would end up reading someone else’s PhD thesis for a change.

We end up employing a lot of PhDs and it is kinda jarring for them to realize that no one cares about their thesis. Half a year ago I ran into someone who had read mine and thought it was really good, which was an awkward moment for me. I haven’t actually read mine since I defended.

who thinks people go around reading peoples' theses? what an incredibly quaint notion

I see a bunch of parties have tents out in Stockholm for voter outreach today. If I want to bellyache about lackluster library hours and want to see libraries get more funding, which party will likely be most sympathetic?

So anyway, since we have an election coming up in Sweden, I guess it is time to do a lineup of the parties. While the starting field is the same as last time, the last 4 years have been the most eventful in modern Swedish political history, so how the parties line up after the election is going to be fully dependent on the exact number of mandates in Riksdagen.

So the parties involved are:

Social democrats (S), your standard liberal social democrats. Their main ideology is to remain as the ruling coalition and anything is fair to reach that goal. Power trumps ideology. They got a new party leader in Magdalena Andersson, but the effect in the polls have diminished. Main problem is that their main voting base is literally dying off and they are now becoming more of a city party in terms of voters.

Moderaterna (M), your standard liberal conservative party. Currently going big on law and order, but they have issues in taking off in the polls mainly since they have problems with the female demographic. Less focus on economy compared to previous elections.

Sverigedemokraterna (SD), your standard nationalist/populist party. Compared to other nations they are rather lukewarm in terms of policies as befitting Sweden. Attracts voters from S&M that dislike the current immigration policies. A middle party when it comes to economic policy and M will need their support in order to rule (depending on the outcome)

Vänsterpartiet (V), your standard reformed socialist/communist party. They have learned that playing hardball with S works. Had with their new party leader an intention to attract SD voters, but the Ukraine war put a dent in their trustworthiness. Opposed to NATO which will be a major headache for S depending on the election result.

Centerpartiet (C), your non standard social liberal party. Changed side to the left block for power. Currently the richest party in Sweden and essentially run by a small clique surrounding the party leader Annie Lööf.

Kristdemokraterna (KD) your standard Christian democrats. As always in Sweden, a more lukewarm version compared to other countries. Currently employing a media strategy inspired by the GOP with mixed results, where their party leader Ebba Busch Thor have made an habit of provoking inner city media.

Miljöpartiet (MP), your standard Green party. More interested in social equality than environment nowadays. They also got a taste for power after the last 7 years in the ruling coalition. Anyones guess whether they will get kicked out after the election, especially as S threw them under the bus after they left the ruling coalition for stupid reasons. Also opposed to NATO so another headache for S. The looming energy crisis can be partly be attributed to MP which is another headache in the works.

Liberalerna (L), your standard social liberal party. Have switched sides two times the last term and one party leader. Was a sure thing that they would get kicked out, but the only one left willing to lead the party apparently have made them recover in the polls by being funny.

Other mentions:
Afs, nationalist party consisting of people getting kicked out of SD, usually due to overt racism. No one cares about them except media.
Klimatkampen, Gudrun Schymans latest attempt to get in on the party support money coffer. Even less pointless than her previous attempts
Feministiskt initiativ (FI), have failed in every election and keeps having party leaders which are academics ( in academia you can succeed without popular support)
Nyans, a party aimed towards the Muslim population in Sweden. Ironically they have also missed that Muslims is a mixed group depending on country of origin or branch of Islam, which was hilarious shown this week in sydsvenskan. Will undoubtedly implode if they have any success in the election.

Main political questions:
While SD tends to be the center of attention, the war in Ukraine, the cost of energy (petrol and electricity) and the inflation are likely to be the more important questions since they are tangible for most voters, especially after last winter. This is unlikely to favor SD, which would be a welcome change for once.

I haven't even heard of this party before, guess they have less traction up here in Svealand.

A recurring theme is to re-open nuclear plants that are deemed impossible to re-open by, you know, nuclear plant experts. But politicians are allowed to be stupid, so...

Another idea is to self-impose restrictions of selling electricity to the rest of Europe, where energy is more expensive (we make most of our own with hydro, not Putin gas), which would break the whole agreement on free movement of goods, which we'd get reamed in EU courts for most likely.

M, suggests price controls where the state will transfer huge amounts of tax payer-money to the coffers of electrical suppliers. It's very lol that they pretend to think this will work.

The whole mess is like 40 years in the making due to an inconclusive referendum and non action by either side. The nuclear plants that were shutdown were old and ideally they would have been replaced with never and better ones, but different parties ( C and MP ) have been against this. So we have had a status quo.

But ever since MP ended up in the ruling coalition, they implemented a bunch of things making the existing old nuclear plants uneconomic and basically speeding up the dismantling scenario. And without providing a decent backup scenario for electricity. So basically speeding on the process without understanding the ramifications like standard operating procedure for MP.

As far as I know, you are located down in Malmö as am I, so I assume you didn’t particularly like your electricity bill in January. It doesn’t particularly looks like next winter will be better in that sense and if we get rolling blackouts down here, we have officially reached the point of a collapsing system.

So what’s the deal with Gudrun Schyman. My vague understanding is that she reformed Vpk into V in the mid 90s and made them give up on any delusions about turning Sweden communist. The only other thing I know about her is from my aunt (RIP, an FP/M voter), who said, and I quote, “hon kan käfta!” (I think this was a begrudging compliment)
