Time to sell a kidney and get a plane ticket and a hotel for 6 months near Hakkeijima Sea Paradise so I can see the cubs! That's good news, though. With Kin, Gin, and Hokuto all passing away there's only Marumi and Kokin carrying on the family line of the pandas we saw regularly. Coco and Seita had two other daughters, Lily and Laila, who moved from Maruyama before this thread got rolling. They've both passed away as well but they both had children. So, despite not having children around, Seita and Coco do have some grand children pandas and now some great grandchildren pandas! Since Gin passed away they seem to just be focused on Seita, Coco, Eita, and Marumi having different enclosures and times outside at Maruyama Zoo. I think there's a whole red panda breeding program system in Japan that has a lot of authority on how the zoos move red pandas and try to match them for breeding. They want to keep the genetics fairly diverse and keep the zoos with even numbers of pandas both now and in the future. Maruyama has four pandas but Seita and Coco are getting fairly old so I guess we'll see what happens in the future. I think some of the difficulty in veterinary care is that the pandas often die mysteriously and suddenly from intestinal blockages and other things that would be hard to spot and counteract. You notice a lot of zoos training the pandas to stand upright and have a snack while they poke at their bellies for future vet and ultrasound checkups. Some pandas also just don't successfully breed or babies don't make it. I'm not sure what the plan would be for Maruyama but we know they've had five or six pandas at a time before, although I suspect that five might be the long term maximum since six often meant two pandas were together.
