The handle definitely counts as a hole, and the fact that its a cup is another hole, so I'd say 2.

How many holes in a goatse? Does the ring count as a separate hole?

a cup and a plate are topologically the same. If it has a handle, one hole. Otherwise, zero. The cavity you put liquid in is not a hole.

The ring is on a finger, so it doesn't count as a hole.

I feel like it was coffee (though it could have been tea) that when it was first imported to Europe the move was to steep it in a cup like the foreign hordes and then pour it on to the saucer to drink. That's why the Europeans always serve tea on a saucer. Or at least, that's what I was taught. It feels a bit like a "just so" story where you make fun of the dumb foreigners based on them misunderstanding normal soothsaying practices around coffee.

Topologically a hole is a through and through. The common "hole in the ground" is not topologically a hole unless it comes out somewhere else, aka a tunnel. Think scientific theory vs commonplace use of the word theory.

E: or a hole with no entrances is also a hole

Its a comic strip asking if it's a hole, not a scientist, why shouldn't we use the commonplace usage of the term hole?

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.
Under the everyday definition of "hole" (not the topological one), a mug has zero holes. This is easy to prove: go up to someone drinking coffee or tea out of a mug, and tell them: "there's a hole in your mug." They'll look at the mug in alarm and then say "what are you talking about?? no there isn't." QED.

Using the same "definition", people can't agree on how many holes a pair of pants have, making it a not very useful one.
