This is so loving good. I really like how nuanced this approach to the situation is, because drat, what a compelling mess.
I like how the MC is handling it so far, being supportive while gently steering her away from death, and slowly getting her to open up while doing grass-touching-type activities.
It’s interesting to think about, like…rn she probably wouldn’t be receptive or appreciative to the suggestion of getting therapy, but how far can this isekai research go before you’re making her mental state worse? At what point do you put the brakes on this, break kayfabe, and take her to a mental hospital or qualified medical specialist? Did they already cross that line?

In a way it’s a bit like an isekai, in that often they’re power fantasies revolving around answering the question of “how would I do it differently if I was the MC of this story?” and that’s something this makes me wonder a lot.

It feels kinda hosed up reading this, the refreshing slice-of-life adventure of a dude learning to open up to others and come out of his shell... by enabling a woman who's having a nervous breakdown and edging ever closer to the point of no return.
You can play off comedic exasperation about foiling yet another waAaaCky suicide attempt all you want if you're in an actual isekai (may i recommend Isekai Shikkaku if you're into that), it's something else if you're placing your story into the real world with a grieving mother.

We've literally seen her break off all contact wth her social circle and family and blocking them, burning all bridges behind her in an unsustainable and insecure position, as a result of him giving her a space to live out the delusion. It's fiction so i'm sure it'll all work out magically, but in real life it would most defnintely end with another tragedy or maybe two.

I suppose you’re right; realistically one of the first discussions they should have had was “does anyone know you’re here, do you have any friends you trust,” and getting her to a hospital as soon as she tried to drown herself but…I mean…I guess the question this story presents is, like, if someone is mentally in a bad way, how far can you go in attempting to help, (and in what ways), and what red flags do they need to raise (ignoring the suicide gags bc otherwise it’s obvious) before you really really need to leave it to professionals?

Or maybe these are the wrong questions to ask, bc the premise can’t hold them up, and it’s rly just a problematic romance story about “what if a beautiful damsel in distress desperately needed your encyclopedic knowledge of isekai LNs” :eng99:

The problem with the 13v13 format in the most recent batch of stories to use it is that in order to get all the fights out the way as they will only happen in the brackets, someone has to lose to keep the score even. RIP Tesla, he looks pretty cool but he cannot be allowed to win because that would just give humanity a hat trick and force the writers to have the gods start to reverse sweep to get us to the final 13th round.

Well. They've also shaken things up before with changing combatants and so on. So who can say how this round will go. Maybe Tesla wins and the gods go apeshit.

I feel like having your child die (especially at the sort of age this woman's son did) is the sort of tragedy where there's no real "treatment." It's not the sort of thing you can necessarily recover from, even with all the mental health support in the world. I agree that it's really uncomfortable having him enable the delusion, but on the other hand there's not necessarily a clear upside to not doing so. It's hard to say what should be done in his position, since you can't force someone to get treatment and given some stuff from the recent chapter (or the one before it, forget) it seems like she's not very close with her husband, which isn't that surprising since they met as high-schoolers who accidently had a child*. In his shoes, I would be very worried that the woman would just kill herself. So just "giving them a friendly person they can be around while convincing them not to kill themselves (using logic they'll agree with)" might be the best he can reasonably do.

* this is also kind of a problem, though, because if I had to bet, it's probably going to end up being some sort of romance, since they've gone out of their way to establish that the husband is, at the very least, cheating. That by itself isn't necessarily a big deal (if anything it's pretty realistic for a marriage formed between high-schoolers who accidently had a kid to fall apart), but more what it strongly implies about the direction of the story.

I could easily see mankind gaining a comfortable lead, only for gods doing a massive reverse sweep, with the last match being at the end of a huge losing streak for humanity. It would be a way to drum up drama, despair and hype for the final fight.

That being said, Beelzebub had a solid presence in the story for a while now, is a pretty big enigma and seems to have a lot going on in the background, while this is the first time we see Tesla and he has nothing outside of this fight, so if we go purely by plot significance, it doesn't look that good for our Mad Scientist.

I've been reading a bunch of weird and surreal horror-adjacent manga recently and have some recomme

Soil was discussed in this thread way back, but I just rediscovered it now that it's completely translated and it's pretty great. Small town cops investigate a mysterious family disappearance and it gradually spirals into more and more weird poo poo. Also a pretty unique art style.

Assault Girls - in the far future a war is fought where soldiers pilot huge robots that look like highschool girls. Long combat missions lead them gradually to mind corruption where they start to believe they actually are girls living normal lives on Earth. By Matsumoto Jiro, author of Freesia, which is pretty great in its own right.

Gamurakan - lawyer opens a mysterious apartament during an eviction, and accidentally releases "angels" that were trapped inside. Now they start infecting reality and possessing people. Very weird, has a hint of Junji Ito unknowable horror vibe.

Pretty similar themes to Apocalypse Now, which it's heavily inspired by, with more emphasis on finding humanity (whatever strange form it might take) in a deeply dehumanising environment. Especially since the Colonel Kurtz figure is also the protagonist's most important guide and ally.

Obviously there's gonna be sexual undertones in a manga about 30-something men "piloting" highschool girls, but it didn't feel like fetish poo poo (imo, at least). It's weird and uncomfortable, but it does have a point and clear theme.

For some reason I kept reading after the giant naked robot teenager peed on another giant naked robot teenager mid battle. I got to the protag readying for the next mission, and just can't find any reason to continue. Everyone is awful, the weirdness is in direct conflict to the tension he's trying to build,I have no sense of the setting. I gotta be honest that it feels like the author has really big issues with women. Maybe some gender identity issues he needs to explore on his own time. EDIT: I'm all for stories that explore gender and identity! I just feel like he uses crossdressing for shock and not because he has any clear message.

It's weird that Assault Girls has no female characters, right? That's a really weird choice in a not good way Alice from Alice in Hell, an AI possessing the body of a teenage girl, isn't exactly a bastion of character either.

I feel like he leans really heavy on shock and mystery boxes, and doesn't do the work to make characters compelling. Dorohedoro is ten times weirder, infinitely horny, and full of charming monsters. When some calamity happens to them, the shock is stronger because the author has successfully communicated her love for her cast. I don't think Assault Girls guy likes anyone.

While I'm not going to go to bat for it as a feminist masterpiece, the lack of prominent (fully human) female characters in Joshi Kouhei is absolutely an intentional, thematic choice. If the military were capable of recognising women as people rather than locking themselves in a crumbling fortress of toxic masculinity, they wouldn't be in nearly as much trouble.

Assault Girls is awful and I dropped it. And I actually liked Alice From Hell. The latter felt like it was actually trying to tell a story. Assault Girls, after its very shallow deconstruction in the first few chapters, goes absolutely nowhere with the premise and it just becomes a sincere action story where chapter after chapter is just nothing but assault girls fighting. Its greatest crime is basically that it's boring.

I liked the one with the peasant samurai as well.
