But they'd need to pump water to build the first brick wall! I guess it's just one of nature's mysteries

https://www-phareland-com.translate.goog/Lettres/N4/Kereon2.htm?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=no&_x_tr_pto=wapp FIRST CAMPAIGN 1907 We put at the disposal of the conductor of the works - it was then M Le Corvaisier, from 1910 it was M Crouton - a steamer which anchored in the small port of Argenton and a crew comprising sailors, masons and maneuvers, all experienced seafarers. Using soundings, they checked the homogeneity of the granite, realized that the north-south fault was very superficial, drilled the first sealing holes, punctured the slippery surfaces; arranged, in the eddies of the tide and the ebb, rungs for docking with two small derricks. Forty-three dockings made it possible to complete the reconnaissance of the rock and the surroundings for the best anchorage, to carry out preparatory work and to execute, in addition, 61 m3 of foundation masonry YEAR 1908 Despite the sea state, which remained very unfavourable, 139 m3 were built. The foundation platform was thus complete except to the west, a portion which required very favorable tides. Cat Hatter posted:Why are the wipers so loud? The ones in cars are loud too, they're just mounted externally, I think some are accessible from the engine bay only, not through the dash. Ship ones are probably accessible from the inside and ship bridges probably don't have sound deadening built into the design like the passenger compartment of a car.
