The first three Tree Stand Safety albums were really good. I think they got difficult to listen to after that. Tried too hard to become some kind of art pop/shoegaze band, maybe? Like, not every song really needed a heavily distorted mandolin on it.

How the gently caress did Ben Gibbard get old? :ohdear:

Double gently caress -- he basically would've graduated high school the spring before I entered in the fall. Excuse me, I have to go listen to We Have the Facts... and contemplate my mortality.

Here's something modern for you increasingly-out-of-touch old fucks. I've been listening to a lot of this new wave of DIY heavy shoegaze that's been gaining some traction recently. There's a bunch of bands to talk about, I'll give you a few.

Momma is a great one to start off with, they're probably the most commercial, less shoegaze more grunge. Very reminiscent of Veruca Salt but with better guitar work. They namecheck Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement and poo poo. Their new album is really, really good. Here's one of my favorites from it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1maB9SVrtk

They also do this weird knotty kinda Pinback-inflected introspective thing sometimes that I love, there's some of that here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAuSXTyY1lc

Hotline TNT has been all I can listen to for months too. Frontman is the guy from Weed, and was also in Blue Smiley and Happy Diving. They've put out like four EPs and a full-length. They tour like crazy and are constantly recording. Keep an eye on them.

"Hotline TNT" is the name this guy uses for this project, it's all him writing everything and he tours with a lot of different musicians. The bassist in this video is the frontman of Toner, whom I'll get to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOcAFJF-EqQ

(this whole release is fire, unbelievable that this is the first thing they put out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrbrfc4_KIg

They Are Gutting a Body of Water are maybe more traditional shoegaze, but they intersperse these weird breakbeat sections with chopped-up samples and stuff. It's an engaging listen for sure. Here's their very recent Audiotree performance; you should listen to their full-length entitled Destiny XL too. They have new stuff on the way very soon as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGlcCFCxByk

Toner are really cool. Of these bands they're probably the least hesitant to rip a guitar solo, which gives them an almost Fang Island quality at times. They have two great albums out and they tour a poo poo-ton as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHDtDuw9CGM

Anyway I'm seeing Hotline TNT and Momma open for Snail Mail this week, with a secret Hotline TNT show the night before. Super stoked.

I loving love that Momma record. I found out about them through a Polyvinyl email, then ended up getting a bunch of other good stuff from their garage sale and also some Airheads.

Which reminds me I need to buy a ticket to see them at Sleeping Village.

I like the new Mountain Goats album quite a lot. I feel like they're in a weird spot for me, I think the more recent albums have been solid, but nothing comes close to Sunset Tree or Get Lonely.

Can't wait to see them in November!

Also Arctic Monkeys just announced a new album coming out Oct 21st, The Car. From what I've been reading in the press released about it so far it seems it's gonna be closer to their last album than the earlier stuff. This live version of I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am from it is also a decent indication of that:

Hm. They've never put out two albums in the exact same style in a row so it's a bit odd they've decided to exactly replicate the space-lounge sound from Tranquility Base. It's not great. I can only imagine this is at the behest of the drummer who can only play sixteenth notes for two hours straight every other night for so long .

I've not heard the new album yet but the last three have sounded like they've been coasting, just pleasant but entirely unnecessary and aimless albums.

I think Goths was wonderful though. They're at their best when focused.

New album is really really good, has the same kind of focus that their best has. It tops Goths for me and might be better than Heretic Pride.

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

John Darnielle has made enough all-time-great albums that I'm just happy to go along with him for the ride on whatever he wants to do now. None of it sounds exactly like the albums I fell in love with as a disaffected teen, but I'm glad he's just making the music he wants to make and if I end up loving it, all the better.

Saw that show I mentioned earlier tonight. Hotline TNT were great and I’d definitely like to hear a longer set from them. The lovely guitars and old amps wailing feedback really gave some texture.

Momma were super impressive, onstage they look like they’re barely out of high school but they’re very tight and professional. Their cover of “Divine Hammer” by the Breeders was pure joy. Their first headline tour is coming through my town in October and I wasn’t sure if I was down but now I’m definitely going to that show. See them live if you can.

Snail Mail was better than expected. I wasn’t really into Valentine but the drummer put a lot of muscle into making those songs energetic and engaging live. They covered “Tonight, Tonight” by the Smashing Pumpkins which was kind of a weird pick but they did a great job with it.
