it did make reaper's due completely underwhelming. not only were diseases relatively harmless, but it did not really mark a huge social upheaval, just a temporary province debuff.

It was less the gameplay decisions for the DLC, and more everything around it. A linear mission structure wrangled into the base game's more sandboxy design. Cutscenes with characters who would never shut the hell up, ruining the unknowable enemy that has been key to the setting since the original X-COM.

Replacing the :krad: loadout music before missions with an inferior track. :argh:

Famines are essentially man-made, so famine events that "just screw you over" is you choosing to be a bastard to prop up your regime and its supporters. Like, Ireland wasn't the only place in Europe hit by the potato blight, but it suffered 10x the deaths of the rest of Europe combined. Yeah, the population was more dependent on it, but Ireland produced enough food to feed itself still, and it's not like the rest of Europe wasn't far more populous.

A Potato Blight event basically shouldn't be just something that happens, but something you respond to. A Britain that prevents the famine from ever coming to pass through direct aid to the Irish would probably be seen far more favorably by the Irish, plus it'd move Britain closer toward knocking down its ancient institutions.

I don't know, considering the time period it actually makes way more sense in Vicky3. Receiving death threats from Socialist Revolutionaries that are trying to overthrow my enlightened monarchy or having Lenin call me up to tell me that my defeat is inevitable feels pretty on point. That's actually simulated in the game I think, maybe a bit crudely.

When you start off there are only a few organized industries and a huge pile of "subsistence farmers." This population basically just produces what they require, so they're stable, but "unproductive" from the perspective of the player. You spend the game filling up the arable land with the particular crops that are most profitable, and you tempt all those "unproductive" masses into factories and such. The state ends up a lot more powerful, but having filled all the arable land with centralized farms, everyone's vulnerable if something goes down.

It would make sense if there were events to let you deal with this situation, but even if it was just set up so that your accepted pops get access to dwindling resources before your marginalized pops, you've dynamically simulated these horrors with regular gameplay.

Though, I'm not an expert in how these famines actually went down so there might be a lot I'm missing.

Incidentally I like the gameplay dynamic of "subsistence farmers," even if I'm not sure that's the right term to talk about everyone living their own lives without the interference of the state. I was reading one of the AARs on their discord, and there was some scenario where the folks reading the AAR were worried about discontent unemployed people, when the issue was that the people outside the factories and plantations were actually too content to be useful to the state. "Unemployment" only becomes an issue when people have shifted their lives around to be dependent on the industrial institutions that only really develop over the course of this game.
