I used to stay at the Sheraton or the Marriott on Canal street in New Orleans, both were fine. The Ritz has old school charm. I don’t know how they’ve fared in the past couple years though. I’ve stayed at the Marriott in Metairie since then when I’ve gone there for work, which has been passable, but not exciting.

Interesting, makes sense.

I’m surprised that the contract is a. enforceable when the providers are in breach - services are not being reasonably provided as they can’t provide adequate staff and b. Not already being violated by the airline flying in its own people to do the job and the distinction is having someone fly in and do it is allowed vs adding it to the responsibility of a local person.

Only ever stayed at the Windsor in New Orleans before. Heading in August to see Little Wayne. I'm typically an IHG guy so I've been eyeballing in no particular order:

Intercontinental

Kimpton Hotel Fontenot

VOCO - St. James Hotel

Crowne Plaza??

Any opinions regarding those properties or some general hotel guidance?

I would stay closer to the French Quarter (on the east? side of Canal), everything cool is over there. Not to say there's not cool stuff in the CBD/off Poydras but you'll almost always end up on the other side of Canal so save the walking. It's not IHG (or anything) but Hotel Monteleone is in a decent location and is a New Orleans classic. If you're married to IHG stay at the Crowne.

My guess (as a general dork on the Internet and someone who is not a lawyer or expert in commercial aviation or much of anything else for that matter) is that there is some force majure poo poo in those contracts where the service provider is exempted from liability in the event of, say, a global pandemic. And depending on what the airline baggage handlers are doing when they arrive at AMS, it's conceivable that they remain within the contract parameters. For example, if the airline employees are in the baggage hold handing bags out to the contracted rampers, because they remain with the aircraft and don't access airport facilities in a meaningful way, they may be good to go. That lowers the burden on the contract staff so they can focus on taking bags from the carts to baggage claim. That's all pure speculation on my part, though.

Yeah makes sense to my dumb brain as well.

I’m hearing a lot more force majeure pushback recently re: pandemic. Which is good. Greed is preventing these folks from being protected and fairly compensated.

Hopefully none of you had to endure any summer travel, but it wasn't Heathrow or Schiphol that did it in for me -- it was from Cologne a few weeks ago. 2 hour security line, priority security closed from staff shortage. On the other hand, I scored two operational upgrades because of how oversold everything was this season alone.

Brussels-Zaventem was surprisingly smooth, at least during the early morning departures. There was no queue to enter the airport, Zaventem customs stamped our ATA Carnet without a long wait, Air Canada check in had a small queue and we were through security and border control in less than 20 minutes. Surprisingly security on both journeys did not care that I was using 7 bins for all the computers I was bringing along as carry on.

Honestly if any of you have the option for a Zaventem departure rather than Schiphol or Heathrow, I'd take it.

Doubt it, unless you can construct a schedule of events such that you have to take a short flight to make it work. Meeting first thing in the London morning and another one late the same afternoon in New York.

ok y'all it's luggage chat time

I need a new briefcase. I have a travel backpack (Hartmann D360 gift object from like 2018?) but backpacks are for scrubs etc so I also need a briefcase. I keep my briefcase load fairly light and I value a reasonable size and weight over being able to fit a bunch of poo poo in it. Here's what goes in:

Bigger poo poo
14" Lenovo X1 Carbon (possibly moving to a 13" XPS or Carbon Nano but basically same size laptop)
USB-C charger and cord
A little zipper bag from D1 toiletries carrying a bunch of cables, chargers, headphones, etc. It would be great to fit two of these.
Paperback book of some kind (must be able to carry at least one, this is probably the biggest issue I have)
Legal pad / similar size notebook

Random incidentals:
Passport
Detective size notebook
Pens
Business cards
Security access cards

I don't generally carry a tablet but I would like the ability to do so if necessary. It gets left out of my current bag for size/weight reasons.

I won't buy Tumi stuff for reasons, but I also looked in the store and didn't see anything that seemed quite right. Everything is huge. The B&R Slim Brief seems to meet my needs but it is a little large and a little dull. Open to other ideas hit me up fellow professionals

I keep my work poo poo in a carryon-size Pelican hardcase, and let me tell you, Vegas does not like those anymore. As soon as I walked into my hotel, security was politely escorting me into a back room to check and tag it. They didn't care about regular roller bags at all.

I also learned that after you refuse housekeeping for two days, a member of management has to come inside your room to do a visual check, whether you're standing there in a towel or not.

This has been true at most hotels for a long time, they'd usually just come in during housekeeping hours, but yeah that shitfucker in Vegas who shot up the concert got them doing it a lot more overtly now.

There is the Finding Cheap Airfare thread where we discuss award stuff from time to time but I don't think there's any specific thread for it.

That said, yeah, you have to start watching the flights you want. Limiting yourself to a single airline out of a single airport is going to make it more difficult, but not impossible as long as you are super flexible with regard to schedule. Another approach, if you're willing to make the investment, is an Expert Flyer membership that will monitor J award space (the I fare bucket on ANA) for you and alert you if it becomes available. You should also consider what award currency you're using (ANA's program, MileagePlus, Lifemiles, etc.) because they sometimes have slightly different availability than the operating airline itself offers.

Due to some comedy, I need to go MCO-ATL-JNB at the end of the month.

I already booked the MCO-ATL leg that gives me 2 hr at ATL instead of 50 minutes, but I haven’t flown out of MCO in probably 20 years. I’ll probably need to hit a counter as my final destination is JNB, how early should I get to MCO on a Sunday afternoon? I have nightmare visions of a one hour line even at the Diamond counter surrounded by screaming kids.

If there was a way for me to just get my domestic boarding pass electronically I wouldn’t care that much as I could just re check in at ATL, but that’s probably not going to happen.
