Don't worry because writing in SW2 is way worse. I still found it decent enough to not be annoyed (close to that though).

yeah I enjoyed it quite a bit despite the awful writing/dialog. it's like a low budget (and I do mean low budget, this clearly did not get flying wild hog's a-team) training wheels version of doom eternal

okay, i finished forgive me father last night.

on the whole it was very uneven. i thought there were some really fun levels and a couple of levels they should maybe just flat out delete lol. i do think they managed to maintain a nice level of visual variety all the way to the end, though it got a little samey a little in act 3 prior to the deep sea ocean level. acts 4 and 5 were a return to form on the visual front, and did add new enemies... but also there was this one really maddening level in act 4 involving a long gauntlet, starting with a corkscrew tunnel that flips the rooms sideways, and then has a gated encounter with two of each of the two peskiest enemy types in the game, and then a humongous path through outer space with dozens of enemies all along the way, and as a reminder, there's no traditional quick save. that one part of the game took me like 90 minutes to get through. act 5 has this long winding uphill path at the start of the first level and i think it handles it a lot better than the level in act 4.

i had already fleshed out all my weapons on the skill tree by the midpoint of act 4, so I think the game probably could've used one more weapon. ultimately my favorite weapons were the power shotgun (very meaty concentrated blasts), energy catalyst (similar to pulse gun from UT) and whale's bane (a triple crossbow). the abilities turn out to be very important the harder the game gets... like the slow time ability is a lifesaver, and it also lights up the room a bit which was helpful in some cases where the game's a little too dark (it does the doom 3 thing where you can't wield a flashlight and weapon at the same time, but at least in this case it makes sense because you're just some reporter/priest, not a space marine). the healing sword ability is useful but it's not as effective later on when enemy projectiles do way more damage. the camera was useless. one thing that annoyed me is that abilities have a cooldown but there's no visual cooldown timer so i had no idea when I would be allowed to use the ability again. i would just have to press the button again and hope that enough time had passed.

i think that maybe this game may have suffered a little bit for going through the early access process, because the dev might have felt pressured to make sure each content update (and 1.0) was substantial enough to please people. i personally would've been okay if the second half was shorter than the first half, but instead it's longer, and some levels way larger. the first level of act 5 is something around an hour long to complete casually with deaths included. it's not like a massive level but it involves a lot of gate switches and backtracking. there was a five minute stretch of me just running around trying to figure out where to go next, because i had no idea what the gate switch even did (the clue given is that something happens above you, but the character also says "it looks like it needs more presses" and so that completely threw me off of the cause and effect-- again, localization needs improvement).

based on my scoring system i gave it a 73, it's definitely good in a lot of spots but it's just so uneven that it can easily frustrate or tire people into not wanting to play through it all, and I wouldn't blame anyone either. my current 2022 shooter ranking is: Fashion Police Squad (80) > ADACA (74.5) > Shadow Warrior 3 (74) > Forgive Me Father (73)

Is Adventures of Square still being worked on? I've seen them pop up periodically but a member of their design team passed away so not sure if they're calling it there.

Been craving a good Total Conversation, I think Rekkr might finally get a playthrough.

Outside of Ashes 2063 has there been anything in the last year or two on the TC front?

Off the top of my head, there's:
- the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes Afterglow
- Time Tripper
- the Faithless Trilogy (for Heretic)
- Rowdy Rudy 2
- Abysm 2

Of these, the only one I've played to completion is Afterglow, which is extremely good. Time Tripper is appealingly weird but kicked my rear end extremely hard in the first level. Faithless is a cool nonlinear hexen/heretic mash-up that uses Hexen's hub system as "what if one big level split into a bunch of maps". The other two I know nothing about except that they exist and were Cacoward features.

If you don't mind the Turbo Horny presentation Headon is extremely good. The two episodes are basically two seperate games, going from a Doom style level structure in Episode 1 to a Hexen or Theif vibe for Episode 2.

Rekkr is really good if you want something akin to classic Doom2, or a doomclone from 1995 that didn't actually exist in 1995. I love Rekkr and even bought the steam version out of support (it has a different bonus episode than the free version and some nice hotkeys for various graphics settings ranging from "vanilla as gently caress on a 386" to "GZDoom benchmarking application") but a lot of people apparently think it's dull or has anemic weapon feel. It's definitely best played with chocolate/crispy doom for that old school feel

I don't think it's been cancelled, per-se, but I know a lot of the devs have been super busy with other stuff. In the meantime, check out Speed Squared, a 23-level speedmapping set for Square.

it's actually crazy how much of a massive step up bioshock 2 is compared to 1.

-use plasmids with free hand while simultaneously still using your weapon, so you don't have to switch back and forth constantly
-scroll through plasmids in either direction instead of either pausing the game to switch or using hotkeys for every single one on top of weapon hotkeys
-plasmids are better balanced, electro bolt not borderline mandatory because it's no longer required to hack robots
-hacking minigame is a lot less tedious, can be done at range with hack darts, and takes place in realtime which makes it more interesting in combat
-switching ammo types is much faster than normal reloading so it's not annoying to do, but saves the amount loaded per type so it doesn't let you skip reloads
-'trap rivets' don't affect you so you can use them aggressively, and you can pick them back up, both unlike trap bolts
-the melee weapon you'll be using a lot is a lot cooler
-food/drink items give a lot more health/eve and aren't useless by default
-the map isn't a confusing useless piece of poo poo when it comes to verticality, so you can actually turn off the big dumb quest arrow and navigate via the map for more immersion
-etc etc etc

and then they went and made bioshock infinite. lol

Bioshock 2 was made by other studios (2K Marin and 2K Australia) without Levine or Irrational's involvement, IIRC.

Then they made The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and Marin was shut down while Aus was forced to make a Borderlands game (the Pre-Sequel) before getting old-yellered, because every positive action has a negative counter-reaction.

Wow, no idea how hedon is that good. Will check it out!

Bioshock 2 is a vastly, vastly better shooter than the first. The first game lays out a billion combat options but never forces, encourages, or even nudges you to mix it up. Bioshock 2 completely changes that dynamic, for the better. I know people hate the story, but I also liked how they didn't try to top "Would you kindly" and instead opted for a series of small unexpected twists instead.

And of course, Minerva's Den is the best slice of Bioshock content there is.

Also if you want a deep dive into 2K's deeply hosed up management , go read Press Reset by Jason Schreier. Absolutely fascinating how Kevin Levine found so many ways to be a complete bellend and how C-suite cheered him on.

It's very much a victim of rushed development and having suffered extremely heavy rewrites mid-development because the fan outrage of XCOM being revived as a shooter was so intense. Of course looking back, I can't help but feel a bit sorry for the developers since if 2K announced it at the same time as the Firaxis games instead of a year before I don't think there would have been nearly as much backlash and more people would probably be willing to have given it a chance. It's a fairly generic third person cover shooter with basic squad management and a fairly decent plot twist thrown in the last hour.

I'm trying to do what I did in my e1-portals wad for DOOM, but I have a grand scheme of trying to link all of the DOOM 2 maps via portals in a single map.

I'm running into a problem, though, where I need to save the wad in DOOM UDMF format in Doom builder for portal linedefs to work, but when I copy & paste the sectors and things out of doom2.wad, nothing in the map works (doors/etc), and no monsters appear. I think this more or less just worked alright when I did this for the shareware Doom 1 maps.

In Doom Builder, I have to open doom2.wad as the vanilla "Doom 2" game configuration to even get access to the maps, and if I try to load it as "ZDoom (Doom in UDMF format)", then none of the maps show up to choose from.

Am I SOL? Or is there a ninja way to convert the classic retail doom2.wad maps to a working UDMF format that I can use?

I enjoyed but haven't finished The Bureau, but I did find myself wishing it was more shooter than tactical (because I'm no good at tactical at that perspective). I wish it hadn't been so obviously reworked, I loved that initial trailer; it should absolutely have been announced after the new XCom was and I'm not surprised by the initial reaction.

Anyways, it's ok.
