Nominations will remain open until midnight August 27, 2022. I am pleased to announce an IK nominating committee has been formed and will convene a preliminary meeting no later than November 1, 2022, with an agenda and a schedule to be forthcoming. We plan to propose a possible IK no later than March 1, 2023 with a proposed start date of IKship no later than June 30, 2023. I understand that some of you may consider this schedule to be too fast, but I can assure you all that the committee will move with all due care and deliberation.

In all seriousness I'll do it I just had a great idea Disaster probes! Every time something horrific happens and gets talked about, I'll randomly probe a thread regular with an appropriate "You have died of dysentery" type probe text. The poster will be grateful for six whole hours free of the horrific knowledge that we have probably ended most oxygen-breathing life.

the best part of this thread is that, much like humanity in regards to the collapse of the biosphere, everyone has just completely given up. there used to be lots of people posting new studies that further expanded upon how hosed the planet is and how meaningless and trivial all responses to it have been. there was long form effort filled prose imagining what the future holds from the perspective of those who, through luck and privilege, survive to see the accelerating decline really pick up steam. occasionally someone would wander in and ask hopefully what could be done; which was always a good time as the thread unanimously with almost one voice would tell them that there was nothing, that we are past the point of no return and life itself is doomed, shattering their optimism into the rocks of reality and resulting in a spectacular meltdown. but now there’s just meta posts and cringe spam and maybe an occasional cell phone captured twitter disaster video copied from the weather disasters thread. much like for life on earth, there’s no hope left for this thread. it’s just going to get worse and worse with accelerating frequency and we will all be forced to watch, maybe tacitly participating in some minimal way, until it collapses entirely. it’s honestly beautiful symbolism if it wasn’t so deeply existentially depressing.
