That’s one thing I really like about the big museums, they don’t just have an example of a type, they have an example with a neat history.

I wonder what this history of that c-47/dc-3 is. Because they’re not super rare or anything.

And what’s the thing between the MiG and the Learjet?

It appears to be the plane from the AFTI program. It’s a program from the 80s that tested a lot of stuff that went into the F-22/F-35 and later F-16 variants. Tech includes auto ground avoidance, using canards for higher angle of attack/super maneuverability, helmet targeting, terrain following radar, what became the F-35’s integrated targeting pod and more. https://www.f-16.net/f-16_versions_article13.html

Even then it’s really big. If you really took your time I’m not sure you would get through it all in one day.

For anyone going there for the first time (and assuming it’s just one day), you may want to consider doing the museum backwards. IMO the R&D gallery at the very end is the highlight and you’ll probably want to be the freshest for it. Also wear very padded shoes since it’s all concrete.

The USAF Museum is a two-day museum, minimum. Doing this makes it a three day museum.

The good news is that the area around the museum is replete with cheap business hotels so lodging is cheap.

Yeah, it's unfortunate but it's still one of the best "is there AvGeek poo poo to do where I'm going already" aviation museum websites. I regret finding it *after* I hit up Ottawa in 2019 so I missed out on Vintage Wings of Canada in Gatineau.

If/when you do, be sure to check beforehand. The Naval Aviation Museum is closed off at present because they're still :ohdear: about the mass shooting incident/"terrorist attack." The only people allowed in the museum at present are CAC/ID/Retired ID holders and people with said credentials sponsoring them in with prior arrangements. On the positive side, you pretty much have the museum to yourselves once in.

That was one of the upsides of the USAF Museum back when all of the experimental and presidential planes were in a separate hangar on base. They would run shuttle buses over periodically for escorted tours, but if you could get in between those you pretty much had the place to yourself.

I haven't been back to Pensacola since flight school... holy poo poo, 13 years ago, so I'm planning to stop in there and in Dayton when I'm driving back across the country for my PCS next spring. I've done Dayton a couple times before, last time was two full days, by myself, in full-on plane geek mode.

Any recommendations for good aerospace sights to see along I-10 between LA and Pensacola? I hit Pima Air & Space Museum and the Titan Missile Museum in Tucson last year, so I don't think I'll stop there again. But it looks like Holloman AFB, San Antonio, and some place called "Houston" are all along the way. Plus I'll probably stop in at Huntsville after Pensacola.

Aviationmuseum.eu was mentioned, there is also aerialvisuals.ca and spottingmode.com, the Wrecks and Relics section of the latter. These all have good databases of preserved aircraft indexed by location. I also remember offhand that there is an F9F Cougar on a pole at a rest area on I-10, though I don't remember if it's on your route.
