Yeah, even just looking at device manage, you see USB Host Controller.

In other arenas, I've taken to Main and Secondary if only because existing abbreviations can stay.

Yeah but main and secondary absolutely don't mean anything close to master and slave in any other context, so that sucks. Not to mention you'll often have a main and secondary slave (or whatever you decide to call it) thing.

I've never in my life heard that applied to usb. It's always been usb host and usb device as far as I've seen. If nothing else, it's an established alternative, if you were looking for one.

Right, that's undeniably a lot better. I'll change it.

It seems that industry protocols moved on from that nomenclature in the 90's - see Modbus serial master/slave vs Modbus/TCP server/client.
Same with DNP3 serial vs DNP3 over Ethernet.

I deal with a lot of modbus and bacnet over 485, which explains where I come from.

I like the manager/subordinate idea, so I think I'm stealing it.

Isn't that EIA-485?

RJ45 connectors are going to be the obsolete tech at my job, not nearly soon enough. I think we are replacing them with M12 connectors.

I bought a new TV, didn't even occur to me to check what inputs it had. I just assumed it'd have loads, and it only has HDMI. Had to buy a new DVD player off eBay because the old one was SCART.

I haven't seen a SCART input on new televisions for years now, most I've seen only have a single composite in for legacy devices. Honestly, I'm glad we're finally rid of that obsolete and failed tech. I remember having to reach out behind the massive 16:9 CRT to change leads and the fuckers would never align right without having to move the entire set to get all close and personal behind there.

A lot of poo poo breaks the A/B Host/Device dichotomy, so saying it "should" be a certain way is, at best, expressing a wish that the universe operate with some sense.

I know my 8bitdo arcade stick does A to A when hooked up over USB.

BattleMaster

USB A to A cables are explicitly against the USB specification even though people make them and use them for some reason. If people are blatantly breaking the spec then all bets are off anyway.

edit: USB On the Go was originally designed so that an OTG device has a micro B socket on it that is turned into a type A socket with an adapter. That way there's still an A to B cable in the mix. C to C is the only type of USB cable that is supposed to have the same plug on both ends under the spec.

edit 2: And it's still "host" and "device" depending on which device is acting as such regardless of the cables

I still have my small collection of DVDs, but really just for sentimental reasons. The last time I recall actually watching one was... probably about 10 years ago? To watch one today, I'd have to go find the USB DVD drive that I know is in my computer parts pile, plug that into a laptop or something, and connect from there into the TV's HDMI input. And depending on the relative obscurity of whatever it is I want to watch, it's honestly a toss-up whether I could do that any faster than I could just torrent it and pop it onto the Plex server.

Come to think of it, exactly this situation happened just this summer, when I wanted to find a particular Star Trek episode. It was right up there on the DVD shelf but it didn't even occur to me to rig up a way to play it; I went straight to the high seas and had the episode I wanted (in Blu-Ray quality, even) in minutes.

Obsolete, yes, but not failed. Scart was THE connector in Europe for over twenty years, and it was good, with some nice features like auto source switching and wake from standby. Plus it was good for cable management to only have one wire between TV-vcr-cable box etc. The plugs were awful though - enormous but also somehow impossible to get into the socket blind, and quite difficult to seat properly.

Yeah, SCART with a centronix plug or whatever would have been the connector to end all connectors up until HDMI.

Will ya close the fucking doors?!
All I remember about SCART is that it loving sucked when a plug/socket was getting sloppy in the connection, and it was getting dragged out of the socket by its own weight. Big ol' donkey dick of a cable.

e: I remember my parents TV had a lot of scuff marks around the SCART port due to upthread mentioned fumbling with the connector. Oh man, this is bringing up memories!
