Counterpoint: when I looked at my studio display for the first time I felt like I’d had poo poo smeared in my eyes all my life and they were finally clean. Also porn looks incredible on it and that definitely makes me blast ropes.

the 5k studio display renders poo poo exactly the same size as a 1440p 27" display just at half the resolution

the talent deficit posted:the 5k studio display renders poo poo exactly the same size as a 1440p 27" display just at half the resolution That’s correct, that’s why people want it. it uses twice as many pixels to draw things the same size and it looks amazing and crisp.

2560 x 1440 = 3.686.400 5120 x 2880 = 14.745.600 Hm Also, very happy with my 4k 27" screens scaled to 1440p equivalent.

Speaking of expensive but beautiful displays, does anyone know if AppleCare covers damage to laptop screens like it does for phones? I somehow managed to scratch the coating on my M1 MBP’s display and am hoping that I won’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to fix it.

Can we not? It's Friday. Enjoy it being Friday. Also, people do legit need big screens due to vision problems, where resolution and PPI are less important. And Ok Comboomer, stop being an rear end in a top hat. Just use the report button, you don't have to take the bait. Thank you and god bless. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I even made the text larger on my MBA because it was too small for me. lol Like, I could read the text but it was causing strain, so I adjusted it to be one step larger. Works much better for me, now!

Umm prob would be the $99 AppleCare display fee, $299 for other external damage I believe. Def would use it before it runs out as a display replacement is usually $400 plus labor.

I have a 32” 4K I mostly bought for Xbox but I like it as an external monitor and it looks fine at pseudo 1440p. It’s very roomy which is great for putting multiple docs next to each other, just having windows that I can manipulate and shuffle, or having lots of canvas in Miro or whatever graphics app. Next to it is the Dell 1920*1200 the new monitor replaced that is OK for putting coworker’s faces on Zoom.

That is an incredibly mature take to have. We've gone from $3,000 laptops every 3 years to "gently caress it i'm spinning up a m5.4xlarge" in about a decade.

I had been eyeing the M2 Air for a while now but this deal nipped those plans in the bud. I'm upgrading from a MBP 2015 13" (excellent machine, but it's time) so this doesn't mean much coming from me but, yeah, the M1P is pretty loving sweet.

I have a Macbook Pro 2020. I've heard a 45-watt adapter will work fine for overnight charging, but will it continue to charge in light use like streaming video or music? I'm thinking of something like this https://www.anker.com/eu-en/products/a2046?variant=41528724390078&ref=collectionBuy from anker

Should be fine. I’ve got a 2018 16” that usually runs off a 45 watt adapter without issue.

In case anyone else is as unaware as me, Best Buy is currently offering up to $400 off their Macbooks for labor day. Finally decided to pull the trigger on upgrading my 2014 15" MBP to a 16" M1 Max, and was totally oblivious to the fact that it even was labor day, but was nicely surprised when I checked their site. They even had an "excellent" open box 16" 32gpu 32g 1tb available that was allegedly like new for ~$2850, but some rear end in a top hat bought it while I was checking out.

I've brought my MBP 14 on holiday to watch movies on and wow that screen is phenomenal. I have Severance downloaded in 4k HDR and it looks absolutely superb. The sound is surprisingly good straight out of the laptop too. Just a great machine all round. Also Severance is the best TV show I've seen in ages, definitely give it a watch.

One of these days, I'm just going to buy a 42" LG OLED and use that as a monitor. Still overpriced for most ($1200), but it seems like it would be great as a single display.

Does 42" 4k work well non-scaled? Wouldn't that be four 20" 1080p screens next to each other?

Considering 32" works well unscaled, I'd assume yes.

Everything I read and watched led me to believe it would be virtually impossible to make an M1 machine, Max included, get uncomfortably hot to the touch. Just got my 16" max and all it takes is generating 3-4 images through stable diffusion for it to be just as ball-scaldingly hot as my old 2014 15" MBP. The rumors were correct in that the fans barely turn on at all, although I'm not sure that's a great thing. Otherwise though, this laptop has been amazing. I'm never closing an app again. The screen and speakers? Ridiculous.

I just realized that it's been ~6 months since my M1 Pro 16" stopped randomly kernel-panicking every couple weeks. I'm pretty sure that's also about the time I upgraded my PyCharm.

It currently isn’t possible to make a screen that is both 5k and high refresh rate; and the 5k part is a vastly higher priority for me. Monitors are the things we look at at least 8 hours a day, likely more. Buy whatever is easiest on your eyes. Even if it costs $500 more. You're going to use the thing for the next 15 years. I still use my 11 year old Thunderbolt display.

I tried that and there was auto-brightness stuff that you couldn’t turn off that drove me insane scrolling through webpages. The image would dim with text and brighten with pictures. iirc the function is called ABL and you can’t turn it off even through service menus, though there are other forms of auto brightness going on that you can turn off.
