I can't think China Beach without hearing the Jenny Nicholson voiceover of the commercial.

Based on Gumilev’s work on ethnoi:

This question regarding Middle Earth currency (which I often used to stump Tolkien experts) has served as the departure point for a whole series of conclusions. Take Rohan, for example: What was its population’s occupation? "The best horses in Middle Earth" are all nice and fine, but horse-breeding can in no way be the mainstay of an economy. Or take the Dark Lord’s countless hordes: What did they eat in the desert of Mordor – jackrabbits? We’ve all read Lev Gumilev and have some idea about the logistics of expansion. In general, how can there be a capital city smack in the middle of a desert? That just doesn’t happen… but actually, it does happen! Cities in the desert – that’s the perished city civilizations of Sahelian Africa. Once the "Atlantic optimum" was over, Sahara began encroaching on the savannah, and that was the end of them. Actually, sorry – this isn’t LOTR any more, but rather "The Last Ring-bearer"!

Last Ringbearer owns, iirc Aragorn is a villain who spends most of it trying to bang that elf chick but she considers it bestiality on the level of loving a dog

Its all more meaningful now since everyone is calling the Russians orcs anyway and a lot of the book is from the pov of an orc who is basically just a person but from the east

The She-Hulk twerk scene is drowning out that apparently the show had a scene with news covering She-Hulk and amongst them were characters that acted like comicbook reactionary types. Disney just really going to cover and absorb that engagement poo poo like an amoeba.

this argument about race and genetics is really really funny because a lot of hindu nationalists now try to do genetic testing to prove how much more aryan they are than the other.

"Uh, I have 32% R1a haplogroup and I have this 23andMe to back it up"

"No, my family claims descent from the sun god and I have this genealogy to back it up"

Who cares. Tolkien's work is mythical and you don't need to explain a political economy for the eternally feudal middle earth.

Ugh yeah, genetic testing is only making this more obnoxious and will probably be used for microtargeted ethnic cleansing eventually.

Besides, everyone knows that haplogroup A4A proves the Seminine are the rightful masters of the Insulidian archipelago, and that they descend from the Aereopagites of ancient Perikarnassis

So wait, the elves don't actually live in Middle-Earth, they traveled in from somewhere else. When they get there they're bringing in their military to look around for Orcs and Sauron and Morgoth, and once those are gone they maintain their presence and the local humans don't seem to like them very much.

There's about 2000 years between Sauron making the One Ring and getting defeated by Isildur. It might be interesting if each season covered a different time period about Sauron's gradual rise to power but then you're going need a few elves to carry the whole story. People will lose interest when Blippo the Dwarf is no longer in the show because the next season jumped 300 years and he'd be dead.

Just Blackadder it and have his descendent Bloppo the Dwarf played by the same actor.

Since the scifiwifi Tolkein thread had the guy reading his Chinese family LotR I can't help but picture Rohan as Mongolia. Helps that 'Middle-Earth' more or less translates to 'China', and 'Théoden Khan' is cool.

I think fantasy racial politics is in many ways just a symptom of the more general problem of endless talentless hacks ripping of Tolkien instead of doing something original.
Instead of making Medieval North-Germanic Fantasy #74928425 give us more Earthsea. In fact I demand a good Earthsea adaptation. Where’s my Earthsea Hollywood? Whole book series and the only white people are some unnamed evil Vikings in like a single chapter.

Avatar also comes to mind. Not like four elements plus Asian countries (and a bit of First Nations) is even that original but you end up with some genuinely interesting worldbuilding and visual influences, especially since they did some actual research and combined things in interesting ways, and had diversity within nations and cultures, something you rarely see.

A problem is they copy these things like hacks- with little originality or personal spins on things, just hacking out elves and dwarves because people recognise them. Even just a change of setting and genre can make something fun, like Deep Rock Galactic- it's not big on story or worldbuilding, but hey, a crew of rough and ready space miners fighting Starship Troopers alien bugs with heavy weaponry, and they're all dwarves with pickaxes and elaborate beard customisation! That's something new, and interesting! You can make lots of jokes about it!

The one black guy in Hot D speaks about how his house is ancient, older even than the Targaryens. He is married to a white woman; their daughter is mixed. There are, as far as we can see, no other black people in Westeros. The implication is that House Velaryon has been exclusively importing spouses from overseas for centuries until the current one married a white woman.

Wheel of Time also did this sort of thing where the secluded mountain village where it starts has somehow sustained multiple distinct racial groups, rather than everyone just sort of amalgamating into a single ethnicity over the village's (confirmed in canon) long history, which doesn't really hold up if you actually think about it.

In both cases, of course, the alt-right has obligingly gotten mad at the fact that minorities exist at all in the setting, you can set your watch by that poo poo.

TBH as a fan of the WoT books I didn't mind this too much - they're supposed to be set in a post-apocalyptic era after a Fantasy Golden Age, so it's plausible everyone is basically mixed race at this point in time. The only pure race stuff you'd need is maybe the Aiel (who really are cloistered) and the Seanchan (because black slavers with a Texan accent is hilarious).
