The Yudkowsky angle on the whole thing, and the bit where longtermism switches gears from a technocratic analysis tool to a cult, is that longtermism has embraced the idea of virtual lives that do not yet exist as being as valuable as actual human lives that exist right now.

Also yes obviously if something makes Earth as uninhabitable as Mars we're totally hosed; longtermism sees Mars as just a stepping stone / backup plan to achieve the real goal of, basically, a Dyson sphere simulating near infinite AI "lives" in a perpetual metaverse. It's the delusional Yudkowsky trick of making one of the numbers in your equation approach infinity so that everything else either keeps up or drops to zero.

Save that family from a flood caused by climate change? What's that, four, five lives? Instead, you should invest that money into getting us to the AI metaverse so that it saves a fraction of infinity lives! A fraction of infinity is still infinity so your impact is almost infinitely more.

So it's just another flavor of science-fantasy nerd-rapture? Sometimes I forget that there are people out there that actually take Rocco's Basilisk seriously.

No rapture, just thinking very hard about building an arcology while watching your bank account balance go up, deliberately not taking your finger off the "gently caress up the planet" button because it might mean that the ark isn't as good once you get around to making it.

I first ran into 'effective altruism' when a bunch of white male computer-touchers did the math and ran the calculations and it turned out forget mosquito nets and clean water the most effective and altruistic thing you could do was give all your money to white male computer-touchers to write Harry Potter fanfiction. Astonishing coincidence.

As a fan of classic cyberpunk novels and their staple tropes: billionaires are fundamentally broken people and should be eradicated for the good of humanity. They (billionaires) cannot understand what it means to be a normal middle-to-lower-to-poverty class human, and because of this they are unable to empathize at all. If they can pretend to empathize, it's because they want clout or some ulterior motive. Too-big-to-fail corporations at the same, and should be eradicated. The trickle of info we got out of the Epstein scandal confirms these ideas. If things continue on in the same way they are now, I think within a decade or less we'll see the first modern-day trillionaire, especially once one of those monsters realizes how it could be within their grasp if they crack their whip hard enough. After that glass ceiling is shattered, we might see a race from other mentally ill money-havers who will do anything they can to gain that much wealth, or at least a simulation of it through power.

Also, to the goons that mention the billionaire cult, considering that rich idiots got sucked in HARD to Nexium and Scientology, I don't doubt it for one second and would please like some links to good YouTubes about these trashy people believing in an ego-pandering religion.

This is actually a huge problem with charities. It can be hard to gauge which interventions will be or are actually meaningful and some charities are outright scams that take money from donors to line the pockets of the board. Billionaire tech bros clicking and clacking on their keyboards isn’t the solution, but still.

yeah, i'm not saying the way charity and aid are done now is perfect

but the problem there is usually the high-level management. the folks on the ground who're actually working with the people in need usually have some decent idea of what has to be done. so i'm real wary of movements based around bringing in six figgie shitlords to tell them they're doing everything wrong

It’s another form of consumerism, too. Maybe the ultimate form. Once you’re past the level of spending money on material goods, there’s not much left to spend it on besides perceived status. Whether you’re actually doing any good, whether you can even tell whether or not you’re doing any good, is secondary.

I actually don’t think most of these people have a consistent or coherent ideology, especially if they’re deep into crypto. The libertarian stuff like von Mises that drove Ron Paul kept referring to the “socialist calculation problem” and the collapse of the Soviet Union as critiques of concentration of power. Why doesn’t that critique apply equally to monopoly corporations, and a tiny minority of technocrat billionaires directing charitable giving? Oddly, they’re all typically silent on this point.

This is sometimes not true at all, particularly in places where your folks on the ground are not from the culture they are working with.

Yeah if the techbros were actually donating large sums continually and directly, rather than at the end of their lives and to a foundation that's at least partially a vehicle to employ their children and family, it would probably be true.

Also the whole "I need to donate to AI threat or space colonization, not poverty or climate change" thing.

Heck if we had 1950s marginal tax rates it might be true, even the government could probably do some good with 91% of Jeff Bezos's money.

The twelve tribes of Musk claim direct descent from Musk's original 12 children that settled on Mars around the time of his coronation as Emperor of the Marsmen, protector of all of Mars and the two Moons. Over the aeons the musk tribes established strong regional identities on Mars and chose to develop around certain aspects of the Emperor's personal history. For example, The Tribe of the Boremen are renowned miners and hole diggers, having been inspired by Musk's Boring company that he created on earth in the days of the Old World. Their descent from inbred South African genes has led to their body developing repulsive deformities over the generations and their modern appearance is often described as mole or imp like.

Because when they donate to charity they can make a big song and dance about it and choose exactly where it goes. Taxes just happen in the background and could be used to support things they don't approve of, like poor people, or IRS investigators.

Wry and wise,
but also very sexual.

the really "cool" thing about charitable donations if you're in software is you can just make a school charity in africa by paying a local some money and getting them an office somewhere, and then donate just million copies of your expensive software to them. it doesn't matter if no-one ends up using it because the tax man doesn't care how effective your donations are, it didn't cost you any actual money to just generate licence keys, and yet you can claim that you donated $50 (or however much you want to say it costs) * 1,000,000 to a charity. its just printing your own tax refunds

It was a joke.

If we somehow figure out how to prevent the aging process on Earth with genetic engineering in existing humans before death (not DNA encoded in the embryo), Elon is still likely to be rich enough to be one of the first to enjoy the benefits (?) of eternal life as a human, if he chooses.

Or he could freeze his body, his head, or his penis until such time as technology can rebuild him into an immortal human, he'll probably go that route like some utterly narcissistic "richer than God" humans do.

Should he become immortal in some way, I could see him ruling over planets and controlling vast amounts of resources for his own gain, while also being bloated and so heavy he floats around suspended because his legs and joints can't support his tonnage – like Baron Harkonnen in Dune, a fictional story.

That was what I was thinking when I said it could be possible, but thanks for making me write all that out.
