Discendo Vox posted:Sorry, what is the spire's significance? To add a bit context to the wiki link, it’s the primary Soviet monument in the country, and a site of a pro-Russian demonstration this year, that got “too successful” for its own good. Multiple police heads rolling, head of national police paraded on TV for weeks, 10 times larger counter-demonstration, etcetera. Toppling it is basically the “and find out” part of that for LKS, the party I linked to in my previous post.

Polish kleptocracy update. Agriculture vice-minister got married, huge party with important PiS politicians. The coup de grace of the evening was a 300.000 EUR tractor, gifted to the minister by his brother, though eye rows were raised when a TV crew from a local John Deere dealership showed up to immortalize the moment. This is also the same dealership that won a contract to supply tractors to Wody Polskie, more widely known as that institution responsible for monitoring the Odra river, ran by family members of other PiS politicians. Anyhoo, as the various PiS factions are in a constant state of war with each other, the PM, Morawiecki, did not show up to the party after a last minute cancellation, because he was warned by his staff the whole thing reeks. Other politicians whose staff was not so forward-looking, include everyone’s favorite minister of justice Ziobro.

Some things that have been going on recently in Estonia. As some of you might've heard we're this Baltic tiger, great success story and what not. But I don't consider us anymore anything else than common eastern European backwater. One could put some shiny baubles on display, but actually: News articles have been written about how our school teachers are underpaid and overworked. A MA degree (required in order to become a teacher) affords them better ways to earn money for less effort. At the same time pension-age teachers are retiring. Young people don't find such a job attractive because of low pay and being overworked (those are unpaid hours as well). Overworking in turn is caused by not having enough teachers. We're lacking several thousand qualified teachers right now and they'll scrape the barrel for anyone. This affects both country and the "elite" schools. That's on top of stagnating funding of universities, those have to make do with money from the state budget and selling education to foreign students. And they're still lacking. National health insurance is going to have a deficit of a few hundred million this year. Roads. At the end of last year we were lacking 700 mEUR in order to fix all of our roads. The funds for road building/repair are getting cut even more in 2023-24. We can't even fix the existing ones and we want to build more. I get the impression (or maybe that's just the content I browse on the internet) that urbanism has been in the spotlight way more in recent years. Mostly because of USA's mistakes when it comes to urban planning: all driving, barely any public transport or bike paths. I figure that we've been making the same mistake. Forget handouts for handicapped people because folks need a new lane to fit their car into during rush hour congestion. Yet we have free public transport which does not go where people want it to go and does not even benefit from increased ridership (high fuel prices) because we don't charge for the tickets. At the same time we run modern FLIRT trains to provide transport to villages of 12 people but we will absolutely not add more developments along existing railroads and not even build new stations along existing railways for the new developments that do get built. I could probably go on. Not adding any wind turbine capacity in past 9 years...

Minor ‘rona update for Latvia - 2nd booster shots got authorised for general adult public a few days ago, and we’re getting the second generation booster shots for the general public in 2 weeks. https://twitter.com/pavluts/status/1565348230249885697 Apparently our booster uptake is like <10%, but with my new job requiring me to travel internationally easily 6+ weeks per year, I’m looking forward to the updated shots, and just to refresh my ~10 months old booster.

following the january events, tokayev is definitely making good on his promise to open kazakh political society and allow other parties to compete in the coming electiHOLD UP not quite ready to do that, to prepare for the coming electoral reforms he wants a renewed mandate from the people in the form of a snap election for a new 5y term and hey if he wins that snap election i guess that right there's the mandate and he'll definitely proceed with the announced reforms https://meduza.io/en/news/2022/09/01/kazakh-president-kassym-jomart-tokayev-to-seek-second-term-in-snap-election no, central asian executives haven't run this exact playbook before and there won't be a need for another renewed mandate and continued reforms before the reforms take effect in another 5 years, pinky swear

Huh, apparently there’s a homegrown Humvee-style vehicle development pretty far along the development track in Latvia. https://twitter.com/pabriks/status/1566798772239306752 Also, I should probably do an elections effortpost. Not in the least because that’s the most reliable method that I can come up with to force myself to read manifestos of all the clowns running this year, like LPV or KuK.

This humvee clone looks like a over glorified dakar buggy with pretty much zero armor on sides and very little on the bottom(no V hull for IED/mines protection is no bueno in 2022). Even more armored cars fielded in ukraine are getting swatted like flies daily so i'm not seeing a big advantage over conventional armored recon. I would guess it will fare as good as a not uparmored lince/Rhys.

Side doors and poo poo is all supposed to be modular, with the displayed model being a prototype of the most lightweight configuration, probably like that due to all the swamps we have. No idea about the bottom, but it’s supposedly designed going off a list of checkboxes gradually sent in by our military, so I struggle to imagine this being an omission by accident.

Having a lightweight modular vehicle usually ends up in the armor package being an option rarely purchased due to prices, which is a worry for a country without endless defense budgets. I think our army Iveco LMV armor packs cover less than 15% of the fleet(the burned out husks of the Russian army Rhys licensed variant in Ukraine were always without).
