My training regimen has been disturbed and I'm ill-prepared to gimmick up a team, so I just drafted whoever looked good plus Shodai. Why Shodai? Because Chris Sumo says he traditionally does well in September bashos. We'll see if that holds up. Hopefully the sumo gods will forgive my lack of conditioning and allow me to stop this rank free-fall I've been suffering.

Thoughts I'll put down to laugh at later:
- Several guys with career-high ranks this basho could be either exciting or depressing. Midorifuji is the most obvious. I'd expect him to struggle, spending more than half of his basho fighting dudes in the Y-K ranks. But maybe he'll surprise us all. He'd be a high-risk pick for sure.
- Then again, M1-5 was overall hardest band for me to pick. Tiny dudes (Tobi, Midori), broken dudes (Ura, Takayasu and his trick vertebrae), old dudes (Tamawashi, Takarafuji) and dudes who've serially disappointed me whenever I pick them (Sadanoumi, Nishikigi, fuckin' Meisei). Ended up picking my fur baby in the hopes Ozeki quality and last basho's rest will translate to a good run.
- Ryuden is an obvious choice in the lower bracket but gently caress picking that guy. Ever.
- I've been bullish on Chiyoshoma for like three bashos and been wrong every time, but Maybe This Time Will Be Different and my favorite henka machine can hold together enough wins to stay out of Juryo.

Mostly just picking !y favourite guys instead of trying for gimmicks.

Y/O: I like Teru, but he seems like the easy pick so I always lean away from him.
S/K: riding Hoshoryu as far as he goes. One of my favourites that I've been building gimmicks around (like oh, Hoshoryu is the youngest in his breacket. I'm taking the other youngest guys, etc). Waka is cool and let's see what Ichi can do.
1-5: Koto is another favourite, Taka seems good when he's not in joi.
6-10: if he's healthy, Takanosho is too good for M10.

This is my only hard rule of fantasy sumo. I probably won't pick Asanoyama in his free ride tourneys at the bottom, but I might start picking him once he gets back to his competitive spots, but Ryuden can just go away.

Just so I have it in writing, in the event that one of my guys needs trading and I don't say anything (likely due to being extremely bummed about COVID kyujo running rampant like last basho), you have express permission to auto-trade from this list unless I chime in otherwise.

Welcome to the dohyo.

The tournament is right about to start up so the thread will be hopping the next few weeks. It does get quiet in between tourneys since there's not much news/stuff to talk about in between so it's normal for there to not be much discussion unless something big happens.

But everyone is just looking for an excuse to talk sumo so if you have any questions in the downtime, people will be more than happy to jump in.

I highly encourage new people to play fantasy immediately as it gives you a roster of guys to cheer for and get to know. Good advice, some other quick notes for the new folks on guys to root for based on how easy it is for new people to get into them and just some fun storylines that I personally like.

Recognizable dudes

Takakeisho: will be one of the first guys you recognize because of his unique physique. Dude is a literal wrecking ball with tiny little TRex arms that is somehow probably the 2nd best guy when healthy.

Takyasu: his distinguishing characteristic is that he's super hairy. Seems like a great guy, but probably past his prime. He's the current holder of the unfortunate "best old dude that hasn't won a championship" title.

Tobizaru/Ura: undersized guys who try cool poo poo. Note that undersized in this scenario is like 5'9 290. Might not win the match and their size limits how high in the banzuke they might get but they'll have a couple "WTF was that!?!" Matches in a good way.

Ichinojo: Giant MF that is physically the prototype of a sumo dude. Known as Snorlax because he has a couple matches tourney where he looks like he's not even trying but is so physically dominant when on that he just does enough to win. Finally tried a full tournament last time and won. either the most frustrating guy because he seems like he's wasting talent or a hero that's a genius at half-assing it on the job and getting rewarded for it depending on your pov.

Tochinoshin: fun super strong dude that unfortunately has no knees. Easy for new people to get into because him and Aoiyama are the only white dudes left so he's easy to recognize

Storyline dudes

Kotonowaka: if you like tradition, he's your guy. Third generation wrestler who's grandfather was Yokozuna and dad was a successful wrestler who is currently the boss of his stable.

Oho: another one with fun family history. Gramps was a top 5 all time Yokozuna, dad had a successful career, but was kicked out of sumo in disgrace for gambling and now essentially runs a YouTube drama channel on Sumo conspiracy theories that's unfortunately Japanese only. He's always referred to as Taiho's grandson and his pops is never mentioned.

Wakatakage/Wakamotoharu: Fun names to say, but also a brother duo
