The only King Gizz stuff I've enjoyed recently was their collaboration with Tropical gently caress Storm, who can do no wrong.

All I know of King Gizzard is the DJ Shadow remix with the weird guy dancing in the video, I dig the tune.

Old Town Road to EGOT

The new Built to Spill album is out today and I'm listening to it now. Most of these songs just aren't doing anything for me :( I like Gonna Lose and have for months since that was the first single from this album, but I can't see the rest of these tracks sticking with me. They're fine, it's just Built to Spill has done much better/catchier IMO

Sir Lemming posted:

Personally I think more rock bands need to take the approach of "release drat near everything we record during these sessions so we can move on to the next thing". Unless it's truly absolute garbage, just put it on the album. If it was good enough for the whole band to get on board with it and figure out how to perform it, chances are it's worth something. If it's too many songs, just make two albums. But I've seen too many bands get ultra-precious about what to to canonize on the album and what to hold back because it's not good enough yet, or catering to some grand delusion of fans salivating over a long-rumored unreleased track, begging for it to be graciously bestowed upon them. Once in a blue moon you do need to take your time on a masterpiece, but more often than not, they seem to be happy accidents.

Obviously King Gizzard is kind of an extreme example, but I assume most bands attempting such a thing would not be quite so prolific.

Admittedly, I'm an old, but I couldn't disagree with this more. I love the return of 10-12 track, 38-45 minute albums that you can actually enjoy as a coherent artist statement in a single sitting, rather than 27 track "official playlists" that only exist to flood the zone and get picked over once for the 3 songs that will get selected for streaming stations and personal mixes.

I'm an extreme example, though, since I'm not usually inclined to play through a deluxe or bonus track version of an album (unless the bonus track was some non-album hit that's now getting tacked on, but then the single is probably already streaming). Artists can maybe be too precious at times, but a lot of stuff that's in the vault is really there for a legitimate reason.

EDIT: Remember the CD boom, where every other loving album was 80 minutes long to max out the space on the disc? Bleh!

It's a piece of JUNK!
It's a tough line to walk, perhaps tougher than I let on. I do love me a perfectly crafted album. But it's also frustrating because some artists really seem to over-correct and sit on perfectly good stuff until it's too late. Like sometimes I think you just gotta get stuff out of your system. Even if it's not the perfect record or it sounds too much like your last one.

Maybe that's more important in the first few years of a band, and the masterpiece can happen later when they all get old and start hating it. Gotta get past that sophomore slump one way or another. I mean, just imagine if the Beatles were worried about their second album sucking.

Sufjan Stevens seems to do a mix of both. At times he is overly self-indulgent (5 discs of the underwhelming Convocations), but other times he sits on material for not being perfect enough, despite being utterly magical (Majesty Snowbird).

Yeah, Make Way For Love (his "I just broke up with Aldous Harding" album) is a stone cold classic.

After clicking that youtube link for the Matt and Kim video, and accidently letting it play through, the next track was Float On, which then made me reminisce for the PDA video. And so I'm watching it and thinking what was the last album of Interpol's that I actually heard (Our Love to Admire). And now I've learned there has been four more releases since then.

Are there any notable tracks on their last four releases?
