I figured tom cruise tried to fly it but the oxygen system gave him the black lung so they made a story about vintage planes instead. Also I learned that Capt Mitchell has a fully operational p51 ww2 fighter that he can afford on his salary. He flies it for fun, for energy, and sometimes to impress ladies/geese.

In other words, the us will lose WW3 in the top gun universe because the enemy now has 5th Gen fighters (!) so we no longer have a tech advantage. Fortunately we have Luke skywalkers and mavericks to make the one or two in a million impossible shot.

It's Umberto Eco poo poo where they can't have it both ways: the US is going to win even against high-technology opponents because the pilots are just too drat good, but don't forget the US also has high-technology fighters of their own, they just don't want to use them the pilot is always going to be superior to drones, even though the US relies heavily on drones itself the enemy does have next-generation fighters, but for one reason or another they're either too incompetent to fly them right, or the fighters are still technologically flawed in some way

Foo Diddley posted:aren't basically all rare earth elements mined in china? Not really. Cobalt specifically is mainly mined in Democratic Republic of Congo, but to be useful as an industrial input those materials need to be refined, and that's where places like the US & China comes in. 80% of the world's cobalt is processed through Chinese refineries. It's confusing to keep this distinction straight, because if you're trying to casually look up the figures some websites will present rare earth metal production AS IF they're being mined in the country they're "produced" in.

The reality is that it's just impractical to film a bunch of F35s flying around for a few weeks. That would cost the Navy or Air Force years of maintenance time and hundreds of millions in costs to fix everything that breaks off to film the Top Gun movie. The F/A 18 doesn't have to sit in the hangar for a month after every landing so it's just simpler to use that. The story doesn't matter at all, they have the F14 shooting down two SU57s which is already Wile Coyote vs Roadrunner levels of magical bullshit. They might as well throw in a Game of Thrones dragon and some X Wings getting shot down, same thing. Pryor on Fire has issued a correction as of 21:31 on Sep 9, 2022 |

That might be good enough for the think tank circuit, but not for the MIC grift leagues. The compass needs a $3 million computer system which automatically flips the labels round (and which doesn't work half the time, requiring regular servicing from a Lockheed-certified contractor).

I was part of a detail testing sense through the wall technology ten years ago, its a gimmick. It uses doppler pulses to find moving objects and is defeated by metal, so like a big appliance or ducting will make it not work. Even then, the only info you get is "there is something moving beyond this wall", which could be a curtain blowing in the wind, a dog, or a toddler rolling around on the floor with the mom laying on the couch. Afaik the project never went anywhere since, if anything, it was actually detrimental due to such high false positives. Imagine telling an 18 year old private "yo dude there is something in this room!!!!!" and have him kick the door in immediately doming an old lady because the dang radar said there were dudes definitely moving around in there
