It’s very depressing when Finding Nemo did some really pretty ocean scenes 15 years ago and the new Mermaid movie is going to be murky as hell for that realism and 80% of the effects budget going to providing the FX supervisors more whips for the exhausted artists.

I imagine parents take their kids to see them as a way of experiencing their own childhood classics on a big screen and this generates more action than simply re-screening the originals.

Disney live action remakes are a way to launder nostalgia and also make that the version of record which is handy if the old movie has any ideology disney currently finds problematic lol

That's why theyre the same movie but worse and with seemingly inexplicable changes

apparently they're done as absolutely dirt cheap garbage as possible and dont even bother spending money marketing for the most part because it's just an IP-renewal so it doesnt go into public domain. and also to get a quick slice of nostalgia-parents-with-kids-now money

Well Oscar Wilde famously said “In every first novel the hero is the author as Christ or as Faust” and maybe some filmmakers just take a bit longer to find that voice.

No they're not replacements, it's more like an amendment to the original text where all the changes have been redlined. None of the references or jokes that point at problematic elements of the originals make sense without the originals, they go together.
